Question Oahu Vacation - What To Do? What Not To Do?

The lady and I will be spending six days in Oahu this June. We picked Oahu because we've never been to Hawaii and are looking to do the "tourist thing" for our first time there. Looking for advice on the must-see places, as well as ones to stay away from. Are any of the island tours, waterfall tours, snorkeling adventures, etc. worth it? Hanauma Bay... Dole Plantation... waterfalls... ATVs... tell me more.

Me being a WWII history nerd and all... I will definitely be doing the Pearl Harbor/Arizona/Missouri/Punchbowl, but how about for the lady's interest?

FYI - We are NOT staying in Honolulu/Waikiki. We've already booked Turtle Bay on the North Shore.

tittywop provided after hotel sexy time - I promise.

You want to do something for her interest? Go to the Ala Moana Center and let her wander through the Harry Winston or Bvlgari stores. That'll get her all worked up.

Edit - you're staying on the north shore? Shark's Cove is a great place to snorkel if you have your own gear and it's right down the road from you. A few beaches down from that is this one secluded beach that usually has a ****load of sea turtles.

Honolulu is fun. The North shore has good surfing. I was only there for 8 days.

I regret not renting a motorcycle and cruising around the island for a day

There's a lot of good diving/snorkeling on the north shore during the summer as the waves are usually very small. You are a long drive from Hanauma bay up there (1-2.5 hrs depending on traffic, route etc), make it a day trip by driving down the windward side. Stop at Waimanalo or Bellows beach, there's also Sea Life Park (dolphin shows, etc) right there.

I'm sure Turtle bay does activities (horsies? bikes?), there's also the Polynesian Cultural Center (20 min drive) (Mormon Polynesian Disneyland) if you are into that sort of thing. Kualoa Ranch (40 min drive) has atvs and paintball type things.

That's all I can think of...oh wait Mokuleia (20 mins) (where lots of Lost beach scenes are filmed) has an airfield with glider rides, aerobatic plane rides, skydiving and the like.

That's in the winter time, it's not so big in the summer time.

The Polynesian culture center was fun and touristy, hike to the top of Diamond head, real cool aquarium there too. Don't do any whale watching from there, save that for when you go to Maui.

I went surfing in the summer. I was just learning, so the waves were big enough for me.

Go to Honolulu and get the lady drunk so she puts out.

Some of my favorites:
Hike to Diamond Head summit
Kailua Beach
Hike at Kaena Point
Drive the Pali Hwy and hike around
Buddhist Temple near Kaneohe
Botanical Gardens near Kaneohe
Ala Moana Mall, make sure you go to the Mai Tai Bar on the top

Thanks for the tips so far! What's everybody's thoughts on the tours available? There is a Circle Island Tour that hits nearly all of the tourist attractions in a 9-10 hour day. That would allow us to spend the rest of our days hiking, snorkeling and being beach bums.

......but are these sorts of tours worth it?

Last time I was there I took an all day snorkeling tour out of Honolulu. I was not impressed. It got me out to deeper water than you normally reach from the shore, but that was all. Shark's Cove is better, Hanauma Bay is a lot better.

If you're going to go to Hanauma Bay, get there early. REALLY early. Parking fills up quick and they stop letting people in.

Tenkaippin in the Waikiki area has the best ramen I've ever had. Period.

DO NOT do a luau; those are a waste of time and money.

DO hike Diamond Head.

Since Hana is way south we may (unfortunately) avoid it and stick to Shark's Cove or Kuilima Cove. But which of the two would be best? Hell, maybe both since the are close to one another?

And I have to know... what about some good eatin'? And bummer hearing about not doing a Luau... she really wanted to do the Paradise Cove one.

Not really.

They're a freaking blast, and the food is fantastic.

... actually, as I ponder, the one we went to was smallish and on Kauai at an old plantation, so I've never been to one on Oahu. Still, it's kind of a huge part of the Hawaiian experience... I think everyone should do one at least once.

Don't force bees into your dickhole through a funnel.

I would imagine that would ruin your vacation.

Have fun!

Great hamburgers at Kua Aina in Haleiwa. Tokkuri Tei (Kapahulu ave) great Japanese Izakaya. Goma ichi: great ramen next to Ala Moana shopping center. I would avoid the circle Island tour, but that's just me. If you want to do a luau, do it. They are usually kitschy and fun. Worth the time/money? Personal taste.

The Oahu ones are super, super commercialized.

Seriously. Me and my lady are going in July. Interisland flights are $50 one way - you're doing yourself a disservice if you're confining yourself to the massive tourist trap that is Oahu. Maui is nice too, but it's expensive and Kauai is more of a true natural paradise.

Don't get me wrong. Kauai was our first choice, but having never been to Hawaii we wanted to get to the touristy **** first jut to say we have. Our next trip to Hawaii will be all about the scenery, hiking, beaches and such that makes Kauai & Maui that much better.

I went to Oahu on business, and didn't have time to hit the other islands. Trust me, you can certainly make a vacation out of Oahu alone. My brother and I definitely had a good time.

If you leave Honolulu it's not touristy at all. Definitely hike Diamond Head. It's about 30 minutes each way or so and the view is totally worth it.
