The BRZ STi Concept--Coming to LA
First Look at Subaru sheetmetal on the new AS1 platform. The pics are nice--I like this shape better than the FR-S concepts. Smoother. And I hope that blue comes through to production.
http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1...o-show-preview For the lazy: Subaru is saving the world reveal of its new BRZ sports car for the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, but it won’t be neglecting the Los Angeles Auto Show taking place in just two weeks’ time, announcing today plans to unveil the new "BRZ Concept - STI" at the American show. The striking concept car not only reveals the new look of Subaru’s upcoming rear-wheel drive sports car, but also the direction engineers from the brand’s STI performance division could take with it. Key features of the design are the tightly coiled bodywork, hexagonal front grille, and fin-shaped fog lamps, but there’s also a new exterior color--WR Blue Pearl II--that's essentially a new generation of the iconic World Rally Blue paint scheme that has adorned both racing and production STI cars. The body is set-off with an aero-tuned lower front spoiler and unique rear fascia, a rear wing for added down-force and a carbon fiber roof to lower its already record setting center of gravity specification of just 450 millimeters. The rear design features bold fender flares and a large rear-diffuser giving way to polished stainless-steel quad-tailpipes. Vented rear bumper corners are said to contribute to improved aerodynamics performance. Other aspects include STI-tuned suspension, Brembo brakes and 18-inch wheels and tires. As we know, the Subaru BRZ will essentially be a twin of the upcoming Toyota FT-86/Scion FR-S. However, the latest image reveals that Subaru’s version of the car will have a unique tail-lamp design. Comparing the latest concept with recently leaked images of the Toyota FT-86, as well as previous spy shots, we can also see that the BRZ will feature a set of fender vents, as well as what appears to be more deeply sculpted doors. Otherwise, the two cars should be much the same, although the Subaru may have a little extra juice under the hood. Both will be powered by a horizontally opposed ‘boxer’ engine displacing 2.0 liters and featuring direct injection technology. The totally new "FA" engine has been designed with a square bore and stroke of 86 X 86 mm. Drive will be sent strictly to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic. Stay tuned for more information in the lead up to the Subaru BRZ Concept - STI's reveal at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, but in the meantime click here for our complete coverage of the event. |

"BRX?"
1st thread in the forum and already b0rk3d. The rumor mill always had 'turbo' a year out. Maybe it'll be sooner than later and the STi will be the Subaru variant with the Scon FR-S getting the non-turbo mill. --kC |

Thanks, Nick!
BRX wouldn't have been so bad, but BRZ is starting to kind of grow on me. I'm liking this concept, although I thought there was no room for a turbo? |

i knew subaru wasnt going to sit down and have a "nearly identical" car as scion/toyota and compete with it and with a higher price tag. I knew they had something up their sleeves. Even the base model BRZ is going to have its noticeable differences from the Scion FRS. And the news of a STI variant makes the juice a lot sweeter. I hope the STI variant comes out in about 2-3 years. Then I am buying one because I am more than willing to wait that long over the base model. I hated having a WRX and not an STI and im not making that same mistake ... and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the look. I think were going to have more people appreciate the aesthetics of this car then we have had over the past 6 years of the impreza's looks.

could somebody explain how a turbo would add significant weight? I'm thinking 40lbs max? and also I'm sure once STI gets a hold of the base model theyll do some more weight shaving to add better/heavier parts or better lighter parts? ergh

It wouldn't be an STi without a turbo. So there is no doubt in my mind that they will incorperate one. I don't know if the power numbers would be as high as the regular STi, to avoid competing with themselves. But you never know...
One thing that does seem significant is the production readiness of the concept, that would mean (at least in my mind) that an STi spec. model is more likely, than not, going to happen. Which is exactly what i'm looking for as i prepare to buy a new project here in the next few years. |

When they do a turbo version, I think 250~280hp would be a mighty fine base to build upon given the cars weight. The aftermarket would step up to satisfy the more power hungry masses out there.

i just dont see why we would need a turbo on this car... im really liking the fuel economy on it. STI does not automatically mean turbo. Its just an aftermarket company so to speak that does work for Subaru. Although correct me if im wrong isnt STI also partly responsible for their rally team? So if I assume correctly that they once again are making a road version of a rally car the only thing that can guarantee turbo is if theres a rule in WRC that cars have to be turbo charged? I dunno. just brain storming.

Haha is this going to be the next 240sx when they get cheep enough for this kids to "drift"? and im a little disappointed from STi with a 200hp and 170lb torque N/A engine but since its so light you wouldnt need that much power but they should still turbo them. But a price tag of around $25k props to subaru but i cant wait to see all the mods you can do to them if they release them!
