OK, I was mainly curious as to how important it is to make the front tire pressure 2 lbs higher than the rears, since I used the same pressure (34 lbs) all the way around. I suppose I could do 36 front/34 rear, or 34 front/32 rear, or something like that.

I might actually add a few psi's over spec to my tires as well, to help with mpg.

higher pressure in the front is probably due to the extra weight from the engine and transmission over the front axle.
I run the factory recommended pressure. The car has been tested by Subaru at that pressure. I think it is pretty dumb to mess with it to either try to save gas (over inflation) or add traction (under inflation), as any gas saving from tire inflation is probably more easily accomplished by using a softer application of the accelerator, or just buy a Prius. If the car came with higher tire pressures it is not because it is good for the car, it is because they are shipped with 40+ PSI and the tech doing the initial prep checked off the box on your car saying they adjusted the pressure when in fact they didn't do what they were supposed to do. Keep in mind I asked before driving off the lot if they had adjusted the pressure, the sales rep said "of course, it is part of the prep" and I needed to bleed about 10lbs per tire the next day after I got home and checked it (don't check it when it is hot, it will always be higher). But it's your car, if you want to mess with the tire pressure, have at it. Just do it from an informed position. |

I don't inflate at higher pressures to increase gas mileage. I increase pressure because I like my tires to have a stiffer side wall for improved handling.
Engineering and marketing consists of compromises. I can imagine the suspension engineers wanting higher pressure for better handling, and the marketing guys wanting lower pressure for a ride that will appeal to more people. I like a firmer ride than most people, so I increase pressure. |

The TPMs also come on at 4psi +- the recommended pressure, so thats always something to keep in mind

I had a skid plate on my TDI, but don't plan to put one on the Impreza. The Impreza's clearance is higher, and the oil pan doesn't hang down unprotected like it did on the TDI.

My car came with 42 psi at all corners. I reduced the pressure to the factory recommended 32 f, 30 r, and the handling improved noticeably. Specifically, more oversteer and better bump absorption. Less pressure allows tires to heat more for better traction. Good question about increasing pressure for less rolling resistance though, might lead to increased fuel economy.
Wondering if anyone is running a hitch-mount bumper guard of some sort? I usually leave my ball in the receiver to protect against bumpers touching during parking. |

Well, the Subaru rally folks could certainly use a skid plate.
But if you look at the oil pan on your Impreza, you'll see that it isn't hanging in the breeze like on the TDI. It's pretty well protected. With the TDI, I'd worry about tire treads, ice chunks that fall off of cars in front of me in the winter time, etc. I'm not worried about those things with the Impreza. |

I don't personally know any of the engineers who worked out the optimal tire pressure that is printed on the door frame of my car. I just follow it, I guess I am a lemming that way. As for your theories, they are worth nada to me. Do what you want, but don't pretend you know better than the engineers, unless you do, in which case pump up your pressure as high as you desire. Also, when you get a chance, invite me to your multi-million dollar test track so I can see if 79's reported 130mph is possible (in your test car, not mine). I know no one here is relying on their "seat of the pant's observations" when it comes to the optimal tire pressure, you've tested it scientifically, right? For those interested, I installed the draw-tite hitch tonight and it was super easy. Less than an hour and you don't even need to drop the muffler, as it is a bit smaller than the 2011 muffler. The fit is very snug and well positioned. Got it from etrailer.com
The pics are a bit dark, but you get the idea. |

During every cold engine start, the rpms fluctuate pretty drastically about 600 rpms or so. Does anyone else encounter this?
After i turn the key, the rpms will peak and settle down a bit, and settle, and settle, until it sounds relatively quiet almost like its about to shut off (around 1000 rpms) then shoot up to about 1800. Then hover around there until warm. Temps havent been near freezing or anything. Should i look into this further? |
