Have you taken the advice to not drive the car and drain the excess? There hasn't been a real "mix" of ideas. Once you finally told us you put in 5.28 qts we knew you overfilled it.

Drain the excess oil. Check the dipstick. Drain more if necessary. Check again. Etc etc. Chalk it up to being new/dumb and learn from it.

is it a new exhaust? that could explain the burning smells

nonetheless, i dont think it's condensation. I live in socal and had a buncha condensation and the water doesn't instantly just vaporize all together. It did it slowly.. over like 10+ mins.

Im thinking coolant from headgasket

Buy a cooling pressure tester, pump it up to the correct system PSI and see if it leaks down.

If that passes with no pressure loss.. Find a good block tester with blue block tester fluid.. napa sells it and others, do the block test and report back, that way you will know if you have any head gasket issue i.e. exhaust gasses in the cooling system

Story time.

Back when I worked for a Chevy dealer we had a kid drain the transmission, and double fill the oil on an Aveo. Customer brought it back 30 minutes later, smoking horribly. We drained the entire thing, then let it run for a day to get rid of all the extra oil residue that had built up in the vehicle/exhaust. Basically it needed to have all that extra crap burnt off. It was completely fine. Now is this car an Aveo? No. But the same thing happened, to a degree.

An Aveo is never completely fine. It has a fundamental problem. It's an Aveo.

But I agree. OP will likely be fine.

Your oil capacity is 4.2 Quarts, you put in 5.28. That is over a quart over filled. That is more then enough to give you excessive burn off.

Coolant overflow being on the low side is not a big alarm. Overtime you will burn off/evaporate some coolant from the system. You can simply add water to the system to get it back to above that mark and be fine. You even said the exhaust wasn't sweet smelling, and you've not mentioned one bit of a leak.

For someone getting so up tight and being so "great" you sure aren't listening to people that know the car.
Why do you keep saying his oil capacity is 4.2 quarts? His vehicle in question is a 2011 WRX. Let me educate you:

02-12 Turbo EJ20/25 = 4.8 quarts
02+ Non turbo EJ25 is 4.2 quarts.

By the way, I hope you're not filling your 18g semi build EJxx with only 4 quarts. Not going to last long running almost a quart low.

As for the OP, if you're really concerned about it, here are a few things you could check to make you feel better/find some answers:

- Compression/leak down test
- Pull spark plugs and check for oil on the plug
- Autozone rents a kit that allows you to test the coolant in your radiator for exhaust gasses. This will help to let you know if your head gasket is blown.

Weird how my OWNERS MANUAL says oil capacity= 4.2 quarts. Or as stated earlier 4.4 with a filter. I also check my dipstick after the oil change, and at every gas fill up. Something the OP didn't do. But thank you for being so concerned that I am not filling the motor I built, with the correct amount of oil.

Note: I do not say putting 4.8 quarts in is a bad thing, many Subaru shops will put that in as the MAX fill capacity. This is key, MAX CAPACITY.

It still boils down to him putting anywhere from .5-1 full quart OVER what is called for. With the design of our motors, this is not a good thing. But please, come educate me.

Give the driving around a few more days, when you overfill your oil it gets everywhere. Its probably sitting in the intake and bends of the exhaust. Are you misfiring? Any sluggish behavior? Excessive fuel consumption?

Thats one another buddy suggested. Its just scary driving a smoking car lol i dont wanna cause more damage.

Compression and leak down is scheduled for Friday.

YESSSS EXXESSIVE FUEL CONSUMPTION!!! ive noticed im getting like 50 miles per qtr tank (ALL city driving) ~18.5>19 MPG i usually get around 20-22 just city driving. no misfiring at all and i havent given it much throttle so idk about the sluggist

Doesn't look like condensation to me. To much smoke that dissipates to quickly. I do see there is a little smoking after the start but condensation doesn't usually ramp down so quickly. I'd be looking at possible head gasket.

If I were you 2, I'd try reading the entire thread before commenting. He over filled the oil in the engine by .5-1 quart (depending on who you ask) and it's been determined to be oil smoke.

My car smoked a good amount right when I would start it up, but after about ~10 seconds it goes away, it definitely caused me some worry, so I had it brought into the local Subaru mechanic over here, and after some snoopin' around, we found it to be a valve problem. He easily got it fixed and all is good now. So, I don't know if this helps or not, but the smoke you have, looked very similar to the smoke I had. Valves were the problem on my car soooo.... Maybe it's the valves? (just a guess...)

That was fun reading all 3 pages, why not take it to your local reputable Subaru tuner and have them diagnose it for you.

Update was the guy overfilled the oil in the engine and ran it like that for over 300 miles. A "bit of blow by" in the intercooler is completely normal.

Default The motor worked before I changed my clutch. :(

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgUcfqBoebw here is a link to a video of what my subaru is doing.

Here is the story, I pulled to motor to change the clutch ( and get to the headers for lava wrap)

I fixed my stuff and put the motor back together. When I would try to crank it, it would turn over, get to about 2k rpms and then cut off.

I assumed there was a problem with the idle control valve and unplugged them, battery, and went through what I figured would reset the ecu's settings for the idle control valve.

Well I was right. But now... it cranks up and idles really nasty and has tremendous amounts of smoke. here is a video of the first crank after I reset the idle control stuff.

any ideas?

(I would have posted this in a new thread but I am too noob to be allowed to.)
