What's a #6 fitting? Are you talking it has a -6an female tap in it?

Basically, an AN fitting is a seal that doesn't depend on the threads. It has a conical base in both the male and female fittings that seals just from being pressed together. These don't need a whole ton of pressure to seal.

An NPT fitting is a tapered thread, so that the deeper you go with a fitting, the larger the diameter of the fitting is. This seals by the threads and can leak pretty easily if they aren't threaded together tightly enough. Even so, they still may leak and you will have to use something like a thread sealer (teflon tape/paste) or an anti-seize compound in order to get the fitting threaded in further without galling the materials together.

Galling is what happens when two materials rub together so hard and get so hot that they actually smear together. Not good.

5/16" is an odd size as well. I just took a peak through the Earls catalogue and the only AN to hose barb fitting they have for -6 is for 3/8" hose. You may want to find an adapter to go from AN to NPT. I know you'll be able to find some brass 1/8NPT to 5/16" hose barb fittings.

Yes. AN is directly related to the size of the inner diameter of the hose. For each -1AN, add 1/16" in diameter. For instance, -6AN = 3/8".

You *might* be able to find a -5AN hose fitting, but it'll be tough. If you're trying to go from -6AN female to a 5/16" hose, your best bet would be to see if you can find a fitting that was -6AN on one side and -5AN hose barb on the other. Chances are, you will not find it since I just looked through the catalogs for Earl's, XRP, Aeroquip, and Goodridge and didn't see anything.

You also have to take into account another thing... I know on a lot of FPR's that the -6AN female ports not only need a -6AN fitting, but a -6AN fitting with an o-ring seal. If this is the case, give up now and either find a way to run -6AN tubing all the way, or buy an adapter (-6AN male o-ring seal to 1/4" or 3/8" NPT female) and a standard hose barb (1/4" or 3/8" NPT male to 5/16" hose barb) from an industrial place.

Yeah, you could weld a piece... but you could also get a 5/16" hose barb to 3/8" hose barb adapter and just use a 3/8" line or even -6AN line to closer to the firewall fuel return line.

Not really much choice, other then maybe stretching a hose to work for you -- which is NOT easy with decent fuel line, but in the return line's case, you only need to hold 7-10psi of pressure, so you could use carburated line and still be safe (and it stretches easier).

is your RRFPR a vortech? I know vortech uses 6an fittings, but they are usually just installed in 3/8" NPT fittings in the regulator itself, you should be able to remove the 6an fitting and get a 3/8NPT-5/16 barb fitting to go in it's place.

I am not positive on those sizes but it seems right.

While we are on this subject, what is a suitable AN equivalent to a 5/8" hose (for an oil return line)?
