But what still doesn't make sense to me is all the 6MT swap threads I've read say you need a 6MT mount which in my case wasn't true. I don't know if this is just something that applies to the year 2005 or if there are other years. Just sayin. Last edited by coyote_94yj; 01-13-2012 at 05:53 PM. |

The 5mt/6mt will bolt in the same way to either crossmember, the difference is in the mount itself. One is taller than the other.

^I've run WRX diameter clutches in the last 4 swapped 6MT transmissions without any problems. I would imaging the flywheel had a oversized pilot bearing bore if it was not staying seated.

^^ what was not correct? I can tell you from personal experience that the 5spd transmission mount and 6 speed transmission mount are different. Enough to cause rubbing. The crossmember, also known as the cradle is the same.

Just a quick update to my clutch problem.... tonight I installed a 6MT flywheel and clutch and it works just fine. I didn't change out any other part so that must mean that the 5MT clutch and flywheel didn't work with my 6MT. While I had both clutches and flywheels out I measured the distance from the engine side edge of the flywheel to the outside edge of the throwout bearing and the difference between the two was the 5MT assembly was just over four tenths of an inch shorter than the 6MT assembly.
Thanks guys for your help. |

You will need STI shafts and STI hubs, or you can get driveshaft shop axles that allow you to use your WRX hubs, or you can get LGT spec. B shafts and make hybrid CV shafts yourself and use WRX hubs.
OR... if you're really creative you could create custom center shafts that have STI splines on the inner end, and WRX splines on the outer side, and create custom CV shafts. This would require you to find a shop with a proper sized hob to cut the splines though. |

I thought the Legacy GT Spec B are direct replacement, i.e. they have the R180 inner, and WRX outer?

What is everyone doing about the bottom clutch cover plate between the engine and transmission? I'm just finishing up my swap, and when I went to install the clutch I realized the larger STI pressure plate hits the cover from my 5-speed. Looks like the plate is also too small to cover the entire hole in the transmission.
I'm guessing this plate is not very important and I can just leave it off. |
