The post below was before the one you quoted and I believe it explains why they aren't interchangeable. The bolt holes in the 5MT cross member to bolt up the transmission mount are in different places than they are for the 6MT. So in theory you have to use a 5MT mount and 5MT cross member together or a 6MT mount and 6MT cross member but you can't interchange the parts, at least that is what I get out of it.

IDK if that makes sense or not... lol

But what still doesn't make sense to me is all the 6MT swap threads I've read say you need a 6MT mount which in my case wasn't true. I don't know if this is just something that applies to the year 2005 or if there are other years. Just sayin.

The 5mt/6mt will bolt in the same way to either crossmember, the difference is in the mount itself. One is taller than the other.

The stock 2005 WRX crossmember and transmission mount. The ones that came with the car when it rolled off the assembly line and I used a 2005 STi 6MT.

That's what I said. As long as you use the mount that goes with the crossmember you're fine.

Besides the diameter differences, they are different styles. the sti is a 2-step and the wrx has no step. plus the sti has 3 more bolt holes for the pressure plate. Here is a pic that I took to show the difference. not even close...i would suggest going for the sti stuff since its something not easy to change. but if youre not putting or planning on THAT much power and are on a tight budget...theres no problem with wrx flywheel, clutch, pressure plate. they just dont hold as well.

I prove this as incorrect. I have had over 15k on my swap. 04 WRX- 05 STi Longblock - 06 STi 6MT - WRX Dia Fly, clutch, pp... Heres the stats. 4200 miles disk done, replaced with brand new 6 puck sprung disk. Replaced @4500 miles, same story, used a different brand sprung disk - DONE - and again 4100 miles later - Disk was done. Each time I noticed there was some walk from the pilot bearing towards the pp. So each time I replaced the bearing with new oem. (not the cheapest clutch disk replacement) The last of the 3 wrx dia disks, the end of my crank was chewed up so bad from the pilot bearing not seating in there properly we had to grind it and polish it so the new parts for the exedy could go in. Last clutch replacement, I swapped to an STi 6MT Exedy full twin. I am a seasoned tech and performance tech. I have built plenty of cars in or about the 6-800hp levels. Done a bunch of swaps, and know all my specs and torques. This was no mistake on install. I would recommend not using the wrx diameter stuff when you swap to the 6 speed. Period. Unless you want to deal with the possibility of ruining your stuff, worst case having to build your motor because you chewed up the rear of your crank, and then having to buy the right stuff in the end and pointlessly tearing your motor down. I had planned on swapping the exedy in a month before the clutch actually started slipping. I do not race as I am active duty army and cannot afford the car to be down. Never hole shot it, never roll race on the hwy, dont go to any tracks etc. I use it in stop and go everyday for work. Basically, do what you want, but this is seasoned advice. Spend the extra couple dollars even if it is stock sti stuff you will be happy you did in the end.

^I've run WRX diameter clutches in the last 4 swapped 6MT transmissions without any problems. I would imaging the flywheel had a oversized pilot bearing bore if it was not staying seated.

NOT TRUE: Just did the swap and I am using the 6spd mount with 02 WRX transmission cradle (crossmember)

^^ what was not correct? I can tell you from personal experience that the 5spd transmission mount and 6 speed transmission mount are different. Enough to cause rubbing. The crossmember, also known as the cradle is the same.

Just a quick update to my clutch problem.... tonight I installed a 6MT flywheel and clutch and it works just fine. I didn't change out any other part so that must mean that the 5MT clutch and flywheel didn't work with my 6MT. While I had both clutches and flywheels out I measured the distance from the engine side edge of the flywheel to the outside edge of the throwout bearing and the difference between the two was the 5MT assembly was just over four tenths of an inch shorter than the 6MT assembly.

Thanks guys for your help.

You will need STI shafts and STI hubs, or you can get driveshaft shop axles that allow you to use your WRX hubs, or you can get LGT spec. B shafts and make hybrid CV shafts yourself and use WRX hubs.

OR... if you're really creative you could create custom center shafts that have STI splines on the inner end, and WRX splines on the outer side, and create custom CV shafts. This would require you to find a shop with a proper sized hob to cut the splines though.

I thought the Legacy GT Spec B are direct replacement, i.e. they have the R180 inner, and WRX outer?

What is everyone doing about the bottom clutch cover plate between the engine and transmission? I'm just finishing up my swap, and when I went to install the clutch I realized the larger STI pressure plate hits the cover from my 5-speed. Looks like the plate is also too small to cover the entire hole in the transmission.

I'm guessing this plate is not very important and I can just leave it off.

I left mine off. I'd really only worry if you were going to be in a TON of rocks/dirt.
