i know this thread is kinda old and this question may be irrelevant but i was just wondering if there is any issues in hooking a jdm v7 6spd onto a usdm 2.0 (2002) or if it just bolts right up no problem?

I was thinking about it and seeing what would be cheaper doing a tranny swap or just buying an sti. The thing is I don't like the new STi's as much as I love the bodies of the pre hatchbacks. How much did it cost you guys to do yours yourself or with a professional or a shop? The scary part about it all is I feel like buying a used tranny that it has been beaten to hell and back and maybe just buying all new parts would be worth it. Any thoughts? |

6 spd swap
After destroying my 5 speed three separate times, I finally did the 6 spd swap on my 06 WRX TR about a year and a half ago. Found a seller on ebay selling all the necessary components for $3800. The purchase included an 04 STi Suretrac (non-DCCD controlled) transmission with all the shifter linkage (no shift knob though), front axles, auto drive shaft from WRX, the R180 rear end with all the housing brackets and bolts, rear axles, rear knuckles with e-brake cable, starter and everything else needed. The only issue I had was the seller sent a worn out clutch disc and flywheel leaving me to scramble and buy one. I had worked out a deal with him to peice together the parts as I had just recently did the Brembo swap a few months prior (so I didn't need any front brake components and only needed the rear rotors). Bought a genuine STi shift knob on ebay for $50... some people wanted hundreds for one which is a bit extreme in my book.
I did all the work myself with a friend but I've been working on cars since I was 16 so I had no doubts in performing the work. It took a few days total and at the time, I didn't realize I had a non-dccd tranny so I returned the manual DCCD controller I had purchased once I figured it out. I'm pretty satisfied with the swap. I knew the drive ratio was increasing to 3.90 but was expecting that extra gear would equal out to around the same as the old 5 spd set up considering the ratio was around 3.60... that's not the case. Car runs around 3000RPM at 65mph in 6th gear and it's a noticable difference. I love my Subie. |

Deffinitly going to do the "expensive" way, might as well do things right for Once on this damn money pit. So I have a 02 Wrx, previous owner put 06/07 rear brakes. Do I need to do brembos? Because that's serious $

So I am starting my six speed swap and just have a few things that I am confused about. First here is the parts list:
2005 Subaru Baja Turbo (4EAT) 2005 STI 6 Speed Transmission 6mt Transmission Mount + Brace 6mt Slave cylinder 6mt Clutch + Flywheel 6mt R180 Rear Diff 3.90 6mt Factory Short Shifter assembly From reading this post and a bunch of others you can supposedly use a WRX 4EAT drive shaft correct? Since this is a Baja I am planning to reuse my auto drive shaft. My main question is the axles...I dont want to swap my hubs/rotors/brakes. So i'm assuming I need to do the Hybrid axles with the new races.. i dont have the link handy but I found it on this forum. Can I use my 4EAT starter with the 05 6mt Transmission? Thoughts? Thanks! |

07 STi swap into 06 WRX
Can anyone confirm this list is correct and not missing anything to do an 07 STi swap into my 06 WRX? Would be greatly appreciated
- 07 STi Transmission - Clutch fork - DCCD - slave cylinder - master cylinder - shifter/ linkage - Clutch and flywheel (I plan on going aftermarket) - driveshaft Now from what I've read I think I have to change the ring and pinion out of the r160 diff and also have the Sti drive shaft filed down? |

Why not just run the R180? You can keep your stock brakes using "gravel spec" rotors from Subaru or DBA. I think Ken from KNS Brakes can get them for you.

As far as keeping your stock brakes and hubs with an R180 diff, the best way to do this is to use Spec-B axles, and put on your WRX hub-side stubs to make everything work. This is actually not very hard to do, and will make sourcing brakes in the future easy. |

There is also the option of a member here who made custom cv races to mate your axle to an Sri in we to run an r180 diff and wrx brakes. I am looking at this as a wagon couldn't use the spec b axles I would assume.

First problem I can think of is the VSS not being read from the transmission. There is a solution for this out there, but I can't remember what it's called.
I haven't seen a whole lot of information on gear ratios for the new models (MY 08'+) Not sure if they kept the 3.9:1 final drive ratio with the 1.1:1 transfer gear or not... If someone has a link to some information I'd be interested. |

Better to just get another 160 with the right gear ratio. To replace ring and pinion means it needs to be properly fitted and preloaded. cost more than just buying a used 160 from someone who did the full swap already. By the way if your not sure what happens when the wrong gears are meshed together, do some more research and get some friends who know to help. don't blow the trans for a simple mistake.

So, after doing some research, I have decided I want to the most cost effective 6 speed swap (2nd gear went out in my 03 wrx) I think my list is complete with everything I am going to need, someone please confirm or correct this.
06-07 STI 6 speed 04 Axle stubs with seals and circlips, and use current axles, or use late 04-07 wrx axles Early 2004 Axle Seal Part Numbers (to be used with axle stubs / female axles): Left: 806730041 Right: 806730042 Circlip Part Number: 805329010 6 speed linkages 6 speed shifter 6 speed shift knob auto wrx drive shaft and drill out holes in R-160 yoke or STI DS andR180 yoke and yoke seal I want to re-use my ACT streetlite flywheel and Exedy Stage 1 5 speed clutch, so I'll use the 6peed clutch fork and my 5 speed throwout bearing. That is what I have gathered through my research. I'm not sure if I can use the late 04-07 front axles, but I haven't seen any reason why not, I have to replace my passenger axle anyways. If its 1.1:1 than your good with the 06-07 sti tranny. - I would also recommend you getting some type of DCCD controller so that your center diff is not always open. |

Thank you for your response, I appreciate you straightening out the rear dif yoke holes for me, I don't know where I got the drilling from, but no need for that, which is good. From what I've read, the 03 WRX dif will work with the 06-07 trans due to the 1.1:1 center dif. my rear dif should have 3.54 gears in it. I think I am going to try and get the Spiider DCCD controller.
