Lots of good info here, but has anyone or does anyone know if a 04 STi tranny with out DCCD will fit a 08 WRX? Im told it does and the axles and rear diff are right, just a question about the drive shafts and shift boot. Can someone tell me if the info i got is right and what drive shaft i need as well as if my stock 5speed shift boot will work?

If I'm not mistaken, the 04 trannies all have require a 3.9 rear diff. Your 2008 WRX is a 3.545. That's a no go right there. You'll need to change that.
And if it is without DCCD, it is not a USDM trans. You probably know this, but just an FYI. |

Anyone know where i can get a website or somthin to confirm this rear diff problem? And yes i know it is not USDM. Anything else that anyone can see being a problem?

some info on the 08 WRX i found
2008 Subaru Impreza WRX Edmunds Test Drive says the 08 WRX has a 3.9 final drive, and this site says the 04 STI had the same 3.9 List of Subaru transmissions - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia weather the JDM 04 STi had the same is what im tryin to find out. Anyone know? |

If your car has a 1.1:1 center differential then you can have a 3.9 final drive, but not a 3.9 rear diff. Get it? 3.545*1.1 = 3.9 final drive The 2004-05 STi has a 1:1 center diff. Therefore, those cars have a true 3.9 rear diff (39 tooth ring gear and 10 tooth pinion). The 2006+ STi for example has a 1.1:1 center diff. It is spec'd as having a 3.9 final drive, but it works like this: 1.1*3.545 = 3.9. (39 tooth ring gear and 11 tooth pinion) I am not sure how the WRX is set up, but I'm pretty sure they have a 3.545 rear diff on the 2008+ ones. If your trans requires a 3.9 final drive (which it does) and has a 1.1 center diff then it needs a true 3.9 rear diff (39:10). Is it a JDM 2004 STi 6MT? If so, then you need a 3.9 ratio rear diff (either R160 or R180). If it's a JDM forester or a trans from some other country specific model, then all bets are off as I don't know what final drive they require. Cliff notes: Final drive does not equal rear differential ratio in all cases. Last edited by kpluiten; 11-17-2009 at 04:00 PM. |

OK, in an attempt to figure this out, I called my local parts department. This is what I was told: For the 2008 WRX with a 5MT, he is showing two different transmission part numbers and two different rear differential part numbers. One shows a 3.9 r&p and the other a 4.11 r&p. He said they were not interchangeable (obviously), but he could not give me a solid reason when there were two different parts. Then I asked him what engines were they associated with and he told me one was for an EJ253 and the other for a EJ255. So, it would appear that one is for the non-turbo (EJ253) and the other is for the turbo (EJ255 WRX). He did not specify which was which and I forgot to clarify. He's not on his lunch break. Why their computer system shows the EJ253 when the WRX is brought up is beyond me.... We did not have a vin to supply so I figure he may have searched Impreza rather than WRX thinking they are one in the same. Eitherway, he said with a VIN, they can find exactly what your car has. I've always known the 2.5i (non-turbo) 5MT's to have 3.9 R160's in the past... |

okay so i have an 05 2.5rs that is currently auto i was originally planning on doing a 6 speed swap sometime next summer if everything goes right since i am only 18 and parents do not want to pay the insane insurance prices on a wrx or sti. this will sorta be my grad/get into college present i guess.
anyways i will have 5k to spend for the tranny swap but am thinking that it would be better just to do the entire drivetrain swap since i plan on sti swapping later on, alot later on. so my question is about how much more would i need to save for a complete drivetrain swap if it was to be done at a shop? or should i just do the 6 speed swap now and save the rest for later? |

Save your money until you have a second car for a DD then swap, or not do it at all. Not to be a buzz kill or anything, but it will take a lot of money to swap over the vehicle to a WRX/STI. Yes, yes, I know you will plan to do it in time, as I said with my WRX to upgrade to the point where I had the 6-speed and mods to get where I wanted my car. If you do pursue with the swap, wait until you have a second car. This doesn't hinder your mobility (work, class, going home, running errands, ...) if something goes wrong. Working on cars can sometimes be a pain, especially when you buy used parts from the internet. I say spend the money on swapping the engine, ecu, wiring, turbo, etc... and then swap the drivetrain after all said and done. It seems pointless to put in a drivetrain when you aren't putting down a lot of power. Just thoughts. But none the less, good luck |

I'll give you an idea. I just swapped a COMPLETE 2005 STi drivetrain onto a 2002 WRX (not mine). Here's the price break-down: 2005 STi SWAP: ~$5400 Transmission Clutch kit & Flywheel with 14K miles (basically new) Linkage Knob and interior trim drive shaft Entire rear subframe with (diff, aluminum linkage, hubs, e-brake cables, axles) Front axles Brembos on all four corners BBS wheels with feash powder coat Additional Items Included: ~$1780 Megan Coilovers (stock suspension only works on 2004 STi): ~$800 2007 Gold BBS wheels and tires with literally NO wear: ~$800 (sweet score, didn't like the BBS that came with the swap) Motul fluid: ~$80 misc bolts, seals, etc: ~$100 Labor: ~$1200 I took this job because I was excited to do such a complete build and needed a little bit of money to pay off my built motor. I did it in my spare time over the course of a month. The guy was a great guy to work with and I gave him a low price accordingly. I also did a radiator and a turbo while I was in there. He also tipped me well and let me keep some of the parts off the old WRX drivetrain (I estimated that into the price above). The car was plain awesome! It came together excellent. Expect a shop to get it done quicker (if they are decent and you have all the parts), but they will charge you in the $1500 to $2000 range depending on shop and all. |

Add about 10% of total cost for misc items that you will need.
I had to get new brake pads because they were worn to 3mm of pad left new lateral link and bolts (were rusted into the hubs) few other stuff like bolts and washers that were lost in customs I still need to a get a rear strut (one of them is blown). Take everything with a grain of salt when buying used. |
