The winter has claimed my WRX
Last Wed night I hit a patch of black ice in a turn and slid off the road into the woods. I hit several small trees. The body damage
did not look that bad. The front drivers side fender and door mirror are dented and a scratch on the drivers rear door and rear quarter. the real damage was to the undercariage. I lost all the oil and coolant. from the rocks I went over while going into the woods. The insurance company called today and gave me the bad news. The car is a total loss. How do I go about getting my mods out of the car? How much dammage does it take to total a 02 WRX? Jim

Sorry about your loss. You have to cause more than 75% of the value of the car to have it totaled. So in a round about way your looking at 10-14k's worth. I cam close with my incident with the drive shaft. My bill running at 8,400 and not yet done with. But no matter what the cost of the remainder of the repairs I dowt they will turn round and scrap mine. |

Thanks I wasn't even going fast enough for any of the airbags to go off. So i didn't think the car would be totaled. I will take pics tomorrow and post them. So if the book value is about 20k There would have to be about 15k in damage.

When you have body work damage it doesn't seem to be that big of a deal to insurance companies...but when you lose all the oil and coolant from running over rocks, it makes me wonder if they just did the "ahhh he needs a new engine and drivetrain.."

yeah, I can't imagine ripping the oil pan and the radiator would total a car.
it'd be worth buying back most likely.. get it looked at. the damage may not be as extensive as it appears. |

I had an accident with my Escort GT back in 1992 (Mazda engine) where the radiator was ripped off (lost the coolant but no oil loss). It was repaired, but later developed a severe case of "piston slap" (sounded like there were monkeys with ball-peen hammers in the crankcase). The dealer rebuilt the engine under warranty, but they said that the only way this should ever happen was if the car had been severely overheated. I didn't recall ever having overheated the car. I didn't remember about the accident until later.
Plenty of people buy engines from cars which were wrecked and don't have problems, though...hopefully this was an isolated case. The coolant didn't just leak out slowly; it was a pretty severe accident. edit: whoops - sorry to hear about your accident! good luck... |

You're lucky.
Nobody wants a car that has had 15K in repairs done to it. Kevin |

Those pics show all of the body damage. The underside needs an oil pan and there is a small nick in the tranny case. The insurance company will sell me the car for 4500 I dont know if I want to go through a salvage title process though. You could slap in an oil pan and drive this car. Someone will but it probably wont be me. The insurance company made me an offer I cant refuse. It might be time for a STI
Cheers, Jim |

Well I have decided not to keep this car. It would make a good track car though. I will be getting a check from the ins. co. for about $23k. I am still trying to decide what to buy. I dont know if I like the nose on the 04's yet as I havent seen one in person.
The STI is an option if I could find one. This is what I am driving for the time being |
