When will the '13 Outbacks start being produced and will they still offer at 6MT in the Premium and Base?

The 13's should be starting production here within a few days to a week or so. We expect for the 2013MY Outback/Legacy to start arriving in stores around the July time frame.

Yes, the 6MT will still be offered in the Base and Premium trims. The only BIG differences will be the engine in all trims and the new Eyesight/ Special Appearance Package offered to the top trim Limited models.

You show up, you pick out a car, price is on the sticker, you pay, you leave.

Default carmax

I'd like to know how the carmax selling service works.... I don't have a specific question, but looking for the overall picture.

From what I've experienced, cars 10 years or older are sent to auction while newer cars are sold on their lots? etc?

That is pretty much what CarMax set out to do back in like 1993 (If I remember correctly). Sure you can get a better deal elsewhere but if you don't feel like playing games and just want to buy a car and leave CarMax is ready to go.

It really depends on the car. CarMax has a hard limit of 10 years for cars on the front lot (available to you) and everything else ends up in the auction lot (not available to you).

As far as cars newer than 10 years ending up on the auction lot it's all about fix it cheap and sell it for a profit. If CarMax has to put alot of money in to a car they are more likely to auction it off since the auction is "as is" rather than a "certified" used car they sell to normal customers. The other thing is if the car has any frame damage or flood damage it's automatically an auction car no matter how good the restoration was. There was also a list of certain cars that no matter what the condition always ended up at auction. For example I saw a Lotus Elise and an unknown Ferrari in the auction lot because CarMax won't sell that type of car on the front lot.

I worked at Carmax sales for 3 years while in college. Made good money, sold a lot of cars, bought a lot of cars before they hit the auction. You can find some good deals there, but if you are a savvy haggler you can get better deals elsewhere. The Carmax differences are you can return a car within 7 or 3 days (can't remember). Their processing fee is low. They sell clean cars and you can get them to fix anything you find wrong with the car when purchasing.

Pretty much sums it up. You can get a car for the sticker price, with nothing but about a 100 dollar fee for processing. No silly delivery charges or whatnot. The only downside to CarMax now (not sure when you worked there) is they have appearance "standards" for cars. Basically certain types of cosmetic damage (scratches and such) are perfectly OK depending on where the damage is located. The return thing was the worst though. I had a few occasions where my customer would return the car, not call me, and then another salesman would steal the commission instead of splitting it like they were supposed to. But that's not really CarMax's fault that's just sales unfortunately.

You are entitled to a split which sucks but you aren't there. Follow up is very important.

Oh I know. Thankfully I made some good friends and we'd watch out for each other. I caught at least 2 dickbags who tried to pull that trick. They even tried to yell at me when I went behind their back and got the split they knew they should have been giving.

There's another fun fact at CarMax. All cars, regardless of price, pay the same commission when sold.

Is the "no haggle pricing" really mean, they won't haggle at all? Or is it just so that for people who don't want to haggle, it's already done?

Interesting that commission is the same regardless of car. In that vein, does Carmax want to finance your car, like other dealerships (i.e. cash is not king)?

When they say no haggle they mean no haggle. Literally you can pay sticker price or you can leave. They are nicer about it then that (taught us some phrases to nicely say that) but when it comes down to it if you don't like sticker you aren't getting it any cheaper.

In a way it was nice having commission be the same regardless of the price of the car. I could ask someone their price range and I had no reason to push them in to anything higher than what they wanted to spend. It worked out great in that respect.

I'm not sure if CarMax wanted you to finance but personally I could care less when I worked there. It didn't make a difference to me how someone paid as I didn't get paid more or less for financing in house. I will say I enjoyed cash/outside financing as it cut out having to put in a credit application.

Question, I bought a used car in Virginia (not as-is) two weeks ago. Today it's having problems starting and it stalls whenever I back up. It's an automatic.

The dealer said they have no return policy. I've heard from a few sources that there are policies to prevent this. I know VA's lemon law only applies to new cars.

is this by dealership or are there state laws?

Most dealers provide a 30 day warranty. I'm not certain if it's a must in VA. Take it up with the General Manager and don't waste any time. There should've been a 30 day warranty sticker on the car or with it. Check your paperwork.

No haggle is no haggle. Carmax was started by Circuit City, you wouldn't haggle on a tv purchase, correct?

Carmax does have a financing institution that makes more money than the actual car sales, however they are completely separated from the sales process. They are one of seven lenders Carmax would use and are considered a prime lender. When I worked there I helped people open credit union accounts so that they could get better rates than what Carmax offered.

Consultants do make more money from warranty purchases, cars traded in/purchased (small amount) and accessories. I never sold accessories (overpriced IMHO). Warranties are a good deal for those that don't want the headache.

Amazing thread!

I just received this email from a NY dealer on a new Tiguan.
These prices include everything. All fees and taxes are included. A Tiguan LE is a front wheel drive automatic with leatherette seating surfaces. The LE with just first payment down would be 342.55 and the S manual with just first payment down would be 314.19 a month.

My questions:
a) There is no Tiguan LE, correct? I'd assume he means SE (without sunroof or nav), but I specifically said I wanted either a manual base (S) or DSG with a sunroof.
b) Those prices mean that's what my monthly payment will be AFTER my first months payment which would be over $1k, right?
c) Do those sound like decent numbers?

edit: this is including $0 down.

Another question.

Since the lease is calculated off the residual value of the vehicle, does that mean I can splurge and go for the top of the line model, since the car will also be worth more in say 36 months than the base model -- and still expect similar payments as the base model? Or am I in la-la land. Sorry if it sounds like a stupid question, I'm completely new to leasing.

I have no clue. I don't sell vdubs nor do I have product knowledge to give you an educated answer on them.

I don't know the sale price. I don't know if this is a lease structure as far as miles, term, residual value, money factor, etc. I don't know your credit score. I don't know the t,t,fees associated with your jurisdiction.

Sorry.

I guess my main question is the phrase "with just your first payment down," means that I have to pay my first payment, and then my monthly payments will be those two quoted prices, right?

Yep. Most leases require you to put down at least your first payment and then X dollars. Since most customers don't want to come out of pocket 2-6k, dealers will roll taxes, tags, fees, etc into the lease.
This will increase your total monthly payment but decrease your initial out of pocket.

Is it true that you should be able to purchase a "special order" vehicle at invoice because the dealer actually has no risk and would still make money on the deal?

No.

Ordering a vehicle, buying a vehicle on the lot or reserving a vehicle that is aleady en route carries the same amount of profit or loss.

Mgt will usually be more amenable to Factory Orders because it is a "done" deal that will add to volume. The car on the lot could always command more profit than one or the other customer is willing to pay.

The only "real" difference I would see is how the Mfr treats orders, allocations, selling out of stock, etc..
Ordering a car will sometimes take cars out of your available allocation or could add to it. Just depends on the Mfr.
