well the reason they ask for ur VIN now is some dealer's keep tabs on wat u buy for some reason, sometimes for will call and sometimes for special ordering
so basically its like an account# for ur car and u

^^^right! i work at an infiniti dealership in the parts dept. we dont keep what you buy on record! the only time any info get kept in the computer is when you bring it in for service and have a work order. then we can look back and see what was done to the car, what was billed out...ect

The ONLY (and I mean ONLY!) time that a dealership records what parts you buy is when you have an account with them. I:E You are a body shop, corner garage or in my case, employee. Paranoia and suspicion is a healthy admirable trait. It's complacent know-nothing mush heads that have let this government get away with CALEA, NSA domestic spying, the patriot act, and soon enough the Real ID act.
I don't mean to draw a direct correlation to this VIN issue but I'm sick of having to do twice the work to protect individual freedoms and privacy while these tin-foil name callers get a free ride. History has proven time and time again, that when large amounts of data is collected for benign "purpose A" it's often mis-used for un-intended "purpose B" http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Vote2...ory?id=4492773 Even if it's true now there is no "central VIN purchase db" now, why make it easy for them to create one? Data mining is lucrative and powerful. Storage is cheap. Data never dies and more often then not it is not well protected. My job has allowed me to do a deep technical analysis of several point-of-sales systems for LARGE national retailers to make sure they are in compliance with the payment card industries security standards. These companies swore up and down that they had compliant credit card processing systems but once I start getting into it I find that they are a complete mess. I find local cached credit cards (un-encrypted) with full customer details INCLUDING the CCV number for months if not years of transactions. It doesn't stop there... manually examining database tables I find more un-encrypted data and more CCV information. When I report these finding the client often is shocked and has no clue that whoever they bought the system from did it this way. So what's the point of that long creditcard example? My point is that you can't take the word of some parts-desk-jockey "swearing" their system doesn't record VINs because there is almost a 0 percent chance that they REALLY know what that computer is doing. If that POS system can show you part availability from more then one location then there is a 100% chance it's networked and an even greater chance that it does some nightly batch reporting. (including what VIN bought what.) People with an under-appreciation of privacy really frustrate the hell out of me . well Hyundai does because me and hyundai had a problem with a customer when i worked for a parts store when i gave them a vin to order a part they said this vehicle already had those parts order (customer ordered and canceled order and then expected me to order for him) so i guess it depends on on the dealership and wat reason the parts are being ordered, and honda grow up just because u dont have real freinds u dont have to make fun of people to make urself feel better about urslef. |

I set aside a box last week and filled it with those springy snake things (the ones that pop out of cans) and put the box in with the stock order today. Needless to say the parts manager damned near **** himself when he opened it |

well - you are right to be concerned about privacy...
But .... Your SSN is MUCH more valuable - and you give that out ALL THE TIME. Your insurance company has your VIN The DMV has your VIN Those are actual organizations that might put that information to (mis)use. You give your local dealer way too much credit.....they are working EACH day to keep the doors open. That's how it is in sales. I would be HIGHLY surprised would they have any inclination or money to actually do anything w/ your VIN other than look up your car and get you the right parts for it the first time. If an order comes back due to being the wrong thing - any profit from that sale is GONE - and profit from other sales is in jeopardy. (Time spent fixing the bad sale and missing the next one etc) Don't get me wrong - I'm all about conspiracy theories.....I wear the tin foil every day. But this is unlikely to be one of them. |

who cares, honestly
if they are tracking you down for buying a turbo gasket or up-pipe gasket or whatever, chances are you are doing something that will affect some warranty claims anyway. so if subaru tracks you down, it just means no more lying to the dealership to get warranty work done.. so their system is getting better, boo hoo |

I had this same experience last week when I called the dealership to buy a pinstriping decal for the fender on my OBS. They asked for my VIN. I explain I don't need anything mechanical--just a decal. They refused to help me. WTF?
Anyway, I agree giving a VIN is a pain. But, if SOA did keep an active database going, it would be pretty cool to stop by the dealership and run the VIN of a used Sube you just bought--or were considering buying--and see what was bought under its VIN in the past. Isn't SOA supposed to already keep a ready database of any dealership service/repair done to a specific Sube? |

Well my dealer knows i have an exhaust on my car, they don't know wether or not I have DP or a tune and they complemented me on the Defi boost gauge and howw of a professional job me and my friend did. All in all, I hate running to the car and getting the vin, all I need is a subaru hand book on how to tear that motor apart and two tools, too bad they still need the vin.

The dealer I worked at always did it just to make sure you got the right part the first time so there was no hassle on either side. No record was kept of what you bought.

similar but different
Does anyone get the feeling that the recent slump in car sales has resulted in jacked-up prices for factory parts, or is it just me?
