I really don't know what you are saying there, but the avcs was set by phil on a hydra. I really don't know how much advance it was running I'd have to talk to him to find that out.

Well that makes me worried about getting my cam timing spot on. I will be running Cosworth 278/274 with a 10.7/10.00mm lift when I get my motor back.

If it was phil, then I'd probably trust how he set your avcs mapping up. assuming he knew you had cams.

you will have to change the total amount of avcs, most likely. Or a valve has a good chance of tapping a piston.

(assuming you run avcs)

Huh. So this is what actually happened to this motor, eh? I remember this from the Ron&Phil thread a while back...just supposedly tooling around town, decelerating from 4K, "tink", and it immediately shut down.

Did you ever determine if this was an assembly error, or an AVCS tuning error? Seems to me that it was likely one or the other...

The valves hit the pistons because wrong spec pistons. I don't think there were any valve reliefs cut in these pistons.

I agree with that it could be either. But on the other hand this was my second motor this particular motor has had 3 separate failures the third one being catastrophic didn't make me feel like I wanted to mess with this builder anymore personally. Besides a car with oversized cams and oversized valvetrain should have pistons with valve reliefs right? I don't see any valve reliefs besides the ones the valves relieved them selves on.

06 WRX does have avcs and I bought the avcs cams from cosworth. And pointers on getting the avcs dialed in? is it possible to just zero out the avcs table during break in?

My Wiseco 100mm (0.5mm oversized) pistons are dished as well as have valve reliefs in them. I would agree that it is odd that yours do not.

OK, you have my curiosity going. If you're up to it, let's do a little autopsy work here:

How did the other pistons look?
Did you hear any light "tapping" or "ticking" at any other time during that first 10 miles?
Make and model # of the pistons?
Headgasket thickness?
Was anything decked?

Yes, it's possible to zero the table.

The best bet is to contact a tuner and see what amount of avcs they use for your specific pistons and cams. With those cams, for sure you won't be able to run the 30* or whatever the stock map provides.

tune her up to you hear the noises and back her off a little

Would you please post pics of the other three pistons and valves...? If it was wrong pistons, I would think every piston would be trashed...

So this motor was built by Ron?
