GM’s Duramax V-8 Diesels to Get Upgrade
Quote:
The Duramax 6.6L turbo diesel V-8 engine – used in its heavy duty trucks – is being rebuilt to comply with CAFE standards in 2010, according to Automotive News.
GM announced that it will be spending $69 million to upgrade the Duramax – some of that cost is going to update the engine’s plant in Moraine, Ohio.
The upgrade will fall mostly on the emissions system as GM said it will use selective catalytic reduction or urea to reduce emissions. The engine will also have a diesel particulate filter. The new engine will remain a 6.6L.
John Buttermore, GM Powertrain vice president of global manufacturing, said “GM is transforming its product portfolio to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, and the 2010 Duramax diesel is an integral part of that transformation, as well as a component of GM’s strategy to diversify vehicle energy sources.”
