Default '98 Legacy Outback...factory alarm malfunction, renders car undrivable:(

I have a '98 Legacy Outback with factory Subaru alarm system. My alarm key fob/control module stopped working the other day (dropped it one too many times?

Anyway, I had purchased a new handheld key fob two months prior, but the programming instructions did not work. I believe the alarm is not behaving the way it is supposed to, as it would not allow programming of the brand new key fob.

Further evidencing a problem, according to the owner's manual, the alarm is supposed to shut off if the key is inserted into a door lock, or the ignition and turned to on or acc position. However, my renegade alarm does not shut off when I do this.

Is there some way I can disable the alarm without disabling the ability to start the car? I pulled the plug on the alarm brain, but doing so kills the ignition or starter (not sure which). I was tempted to try push starting the car to see what effect getting the engine running would have on the alarm, although if the ignition is being killed, I'd assume even push starting won't work.

I'd also love to simply remove the alarm and be done with it, but I can't tell if its a simple plug and play installation, or more complicated

Any help is appreciated. Fortunately, this problem cropped up when I was at my parents house, so I was able to leave the car there.

Thanks,

Mark
