rewiring headlights Q
well a while ago when i got into my accident the body shop i had do the work f'ed up my headlight wiring. i did have the ebay knockoffs and when i put the stockers back on one of the terminals burned up so the passanger low beam didnt work.
i want to re wire my headlights using thicker wires and i was wondering should i rewire the high beams as well as the low? i saw that the high beam relay is supposed to be in the right kicker pannel, but when i removed the plastic panel i didnt really see anythin other than connectors. did i just miss the relay or is it somewhere else?

well i today i just ran a new wire from the low beam relay's in the fuse block under the hood to the headlight bulbs, and i didnt know if running new wires for the highbeams would be worth the trouble or not.

would be best if you ran that wire to power a relay and then use the battery to power your headlight. it'll be much brighter too.
you can do the same for the high beams. |

i am trying to re wire some ebay knock offs. i have attempted this according to these instructions...
1: Cut the harness on the new lights (white, blue and black wires) about 2-3" up from the large blue plug (leaving yourself enough room to use solderless, crimp type wire connectors). 2: Low Beam Relay (see diagram): #85 terminal on relay - to center (C) wire from plug (plug to factory harness) #86 terminal on relay - to ground #87 terminal on relay - to positive feed direct from battery #30 terminal on relay - to either wire on headlamp bulb plug 3: High Beam Relay (see diagram): #85 terminal on relay - to positive feed direct from battery #86 terminal on relay - to left (L) wire from plug (plug to factory harness) #87 terminal on relay - to positive feed direct from battery #30 terminal on relay - to either wire on headlamp bulb plug 4: The remaining, unattached wire on the headlamp bulb plug should go to ground. wired in this fashion the lamps work but not right. the passenger signal stays on constant even when flashing. when key is removed the signal switches off and the outside passenger low beam stays on. obviously unacceptable. when high beams are engaged both lamps are lit which is what i want. maybe i should mention fog lights are not hooked up but button is not engaged either. i would love to see a wiring diagram on how the lights/wires are supposed to function. i understand these lamps aren't in series and work on a switched negative type deal. i should also mention this is a two bulb(h7) one signal lamp for each side. thanks jake |

I'm going to attempt to help you out, and use what you previously said but with changes. Changes / emphasis are in bold.
Let's take a step back for a moment. From the factory on a 2002/2003 your headlight uses an H4/9003 bulb. Each headlight bulb is plugged into a 3-prong connector that comes from the factory harness, one to each lamp. The 3-prong connector is as follows: power (constant), low beam ground (switched), and high beam ground (switched). You already know this. Here however is where one of your problems comes from -- the center power lead is always constant (on), whether the car is on or off. You need to create two head light harnesses with relays -- see the following as a reference: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...1388903&page=2 Once you create the harnesses with relays, you need to wire the relays as follows: 1: Cut the harness on the new lights (white, blue and black wires) about 2-3” up from the large blue plug (leaving yourself enough room to use solderless, crimp type wire connectors). OK, you can do this. Relay -- typical: #85 trigger #86 trigger #87 power in #30 power out 2: Low Beam Relay: #85 this should be connected to the ground wire coming off of the factory head lamp harness plug end for the low beam (because Subaru uses a switched ground system) #86 this should be connected to the power wire (center lead) coming off of the factory head lamp harness plug end #87 connect to positive feed direct from either the alternator or battery (with fuse holder as close to the power source as possible) #30 terminal on relay – to either wire on headlamp bulb plug 3. High Beam Relay: #85 this should be connected to the ground wire coming off of the factory head lamp harness plug end for the high beam (because Subaru uses a switched ground system) #86 this should be connected to the power wire (center lead) coming off of the factory head lamp harness plug end #87 connect to positive feed direct from either the alternator or battery (with fuse holder as close to the power source as possible) #30 terminal on relay – to either wire on headlamp bulb plug 4: The remaining, unattached wire on the headlamp bulb plug should go to ground. Make sure that the ground wire for each head lamp goes right to the body of the car as close to the head lamp as possible. If anyone notices an error, etc. let me know. Hope this helps. |
