Please dont automatically hate me, moving to Portland
Ok so I know quite a few people up in Portland hate California'ns moving up there and stealing your land but at least this one drives a Subaru.
The wife baby and I are moving up to Portland/Beaverton in three weeks, moving from the bay area where its retarded expensive and has so many flaws. We visited last weekend when I interviewed for Kuni BMW in Beaverton off Canyon Rd. Well I go the job so looks like we're coming up there. Likely we'd be getting an apartment for a year or so in Beaverton so it's close to my work and a few day cares. The wifey is interviewing for a management position at a apartment building in the Peal District. Any big shows/meets coming up? Any weekly meets in the area to come meet some locals? Also we did a few tourist-y things while up there (Voodoo, Portland City Grill, DRINK LOTS OF BEER!), anything a must see or must do with a little kid? Lastly, I guess theres no bi-annual smog (sweet!), are there still ref tickets for having obviously non-oem parts? I plan on building and swapping my GC8 and want to know how crazy I could go. Well we're excited and looks like theres quite a big Subaru scene which is great! Cant wait to check out a few meets. Please, dont hate me because where Im from. My current Subaru btw

One last questions, I remember hearing this is the most active PNW forum, is this true or are there other fairly active local forums?

Welcome! You'll definitely enjoy Oregon. Portland is a pretty rad place, and the NW has a pretty decent size Subaru community. Beautiful RS by the way!

If your wife gets the job in the Pearl I would recommend living there. Yes its expensive, but its so nice. I have lived here 3 years and wouldn't trade it for anywhere else.
I have no beef with Californians coming up as long as they use their turn signals and don't dodge from lane to lane in order to gain just ONE spot in traffic. |

Also, for attractons, especially family friendly, there is always OMSI and the Portland Zoo, or even the Portland Japanese Garden. The list goes on; Powells books, chinese gardens, pearl district, etc. And the about 3 hrs north, there's beautiful Seattle where there is everything to do. Basically Portland, times 10. Hope that helps! |

I work in Beaverton, very close to Kuni. I also live in the area, technically unincorporated WA Co. I'm also an import, but from NY.
We will get you off of tourist crap and into much better places to drink and hang. The amount of great little places in PDX is staggering and in all my travels in the US and abroad Portland is an impressive little city. However, few of those places exist in Beaverton as far as I can tell. COBB Surgeline has a nice First Thursday meet, but this conflicts with the artsy first Thursday down town once that gets going again (you can do both, I have). Lots to do, esp. starting this time of year. There is a large range of folks on here in terms of what they do with their cars, jobs, knowledge base, etc., which always makes for interesting threads. So welcome, and I hope to see you around...esp. if you actually track your car. |

Hi. Welcome! I'm a newbie too to Portland from Honolulu.
What will you be doing at Kuni? I used to work at BMW Portland in downtown. Frankly... I believe you got the better of the 2 BMW stores to work at. By the way, BEAUTIFUL GC8 sedan!!! I used to have a '01 2.5RS sedan in silverstone metallic, but had to get rid of it because my wife couldn't drive stick and when she tried to learn, the exedy stg2 clutch and lightweight flywheel didn't help the process. Still... at least you're enjoying your GC8 still. |

San Jose area. Have lived here most my life and in various cities around San Jose. Quote:
Thanks! I love this car, even more so than my 06 STI. Just so much character and so simple. You should have pushed the wife to learn! Haha, if she can drive a car with that clutch/flywheel she could have easily driven most anything. The weather shift for me isnt too extreme, I bet it was quite a bit to take in coming from Honolulu... |

I moved here 2 years ago from Chicago. Here are my honest opinions/observations. Most of these will be pretty negative unfortunately.
1.) Lived in the Pearl my first year and it was ok, but there are so many homeless people. Sucks. After I got my fill of downtown, I moved just slightly outside of town in Sylvan Highlands. More space, little cheaper on rent and I have a backyard! 2.) Scenery out here is awesome. The drives are better than anywhere I've been. Try Skyline as soon as you can. Also, autocross at PIR always has a good turnout. 3.) Subaru's are everywhere. This actually sucks. Nobody needs one here, even if you do go to Mt. Hood every weekend. I bought mine in Chicago... you know, where it actually snows. 4.) Beer, beer, and more beer... yes!! But if you drink anything other than an IPA, you'll get mocked. It's ok though, I got used to them and they're pretty tasty. 5.) People here plain suck because A) they're either super hipster and think they're smarter than you even though they didn't even finish high school and B) very impersonal, hard to make good friends. Luckily, I work with a lot of people I went to grad school with so I still have genuine people around me. 6.) If you like soccer, you can find a pickup game about anytime, but everyone here is crazy about the ****ty Timbers in the ****ty league they call MLS. Delusional. 7.) Food, oh my gosh, the food is sooo good! Anyway, welcome! Still think it's an improvement over San Fran. |

I love the weather here in Portland. Funny... that coming from a person that's lived in Hawaii for 20+ years. Haha. I just don't seem to like temps over 70 degrees. I don't do well in heat. That, and I've lived in Seattle for about 6 years before too, so I love the PNW. You're gonna like it here too. |

2) Heard there are monthly meets at PIR, will be going there and to do some racing. 3) You dont need rugged terrain to own a Subaru, theres no reason to own one in the bay area yet there are a lot. They're just fun reliable cars 4) Love beer, love IPA. I homebrew and have been to Stone brewfest among many other drinking events...all of which I dont remember. 5) I was thinking that about the people but Im sure it'll be easy to meet friends at work or threw common interest, like cars. 6) Now this is the biggest set back, we LOVE our San Jose Sharks and there is no hockey near! Vancouver Canucks is 5 hours away, we're praying the Pheonix Cayote's relocated to Seattle. We're also big 9er's fans. Soccer, too many fake fouls and too boring watch, fun to play though! 7) We love our food One of the formans there called it "Porkland" cause others obviously love there food too haha Thanks for the insight! I think if a Hawaii native can live there, we should be fine. |

Soooo know that you have been up there for a few months how do you like it?
The g/f and little girl have been contemplating this move as well but I didn't really care to start a new thread. Can only drink IPA's - I'm sold! Why do you need to have snow to drive a Subaru, AWD handling is even better on dry roads. How are the areas S of Portland? Lake Oswega, Oregon City, Milwaukie, Clackamas? |

I grew up in Santa Cruz/ San Jose and moved to Portland 3 years ago. Best decision I ever made! I definitely miss the Sharks' games.. but there are the Portland Winterhawks games to go to. Almost the same.. haha
As mentioned above; how are you liking your new home? |

Dude, to put it simply... We love it! SO much to do outdoors and downtown. Of course we moved at the beginning of the best season here, summer, and the weather was California like. Its now getting cold and still dry but not for long. We're told take advantage of the sun and we do by far, the only time we're at home is to let the baby nap then we're back out. Beer, thats a no brainer. Too much good beer and almost every brewery we went to has great food and is kid friendly. Havent ventured around that area yet, I know they are great area's especially Lake Oswego. Quote:
Family and friends were hard to leave behind, but the missing the Sharks is killer! We've caught a few games aired on TV but not enough (I'm actually wearing my Sharks sweater now haha). |

Take a weekend trip up here to Seattle, if you haven't already. You might just feel the need to move even more north. I have family in the Vancouver/Portland/Beaverton area and it seems pretty nice there, you don't get much of a change heading along I5 between protland and seattle.
