PRESS RELEASE:

HYUNDAI UNVEILS REAR-WHEEL DRIVE CONCEPT GENESIS COUPE

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 14, 2007 – Hyundai unveiled its highly anticipated Concept Genesis Coupe during a press conference at the Los Angeles International Auto Show today. The concept car heralds the introduction of an all-new, rear-wheel drive 2 + 2 sports coupe scheduled to join the Hyundai lineup in the spring of 2009. Following the introduction earlier this year of the Concept Genesis sedan, Concept Genesis Coupe signals Hyundai's second step in broadening its appeal to driving enthusiasts.

The Sonic Orange concept is complemented by a Ballistic Black carbon fiber hood, roof and ground effects for reduced weight. Strong hints of the production version are highlighted in its "Z" bodylines and powerful curves. When the production sports coupe arrives, it likely will be the most affordable 300+ horsepower car on the market, and the most dynamic performance car yet from Hyundai.

Hyundai revealed its Genesis Coupe concept at the Los Angeles auto show on Wednesday, but development work on the rear-wheel-drive two-door and its flagship sedan sibling are well on the way to production.

The production coupe debuts next spring at the New York show and will arrive in dealerships in spring 2009 as a 2010 model. The production sedan bows at the Detroit show in January and goes on sale in mid-2008 as an '09.

In an interview at the Los Angeles show, Hyundai product planning chief John Krafcik cleared up a number of details surrounding the Korean automaker's future top-end models:

The coupe will not get the 4.6-liter 350-hp V8 slated for the sedan. The primary coupe engine is a 3.8-liter, 300-hp-plus, 250-lb-ft V6. Krafcik confirmed that the coupe will also come with a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four producing in excess of 200 hp--giving Hyundai the only four-cylinder rear-wheel-drive coupe in the market. The company already has its sights set on the drift market, a group still enamored with the dynamics of the four-cylinder, rear-drive Nissan 240SX last built in the 1990s. The four-cylinder coupe, equipped with either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic, should start in the low $20,000 range.

Though the V6-powered Mustang is an obvious competitor, Krafcik notes the Genesis (which will likely gain a new name before production) is smaller and lighter than the Ford pony car. Because of the car's wide range of optional equipment and potential buyers, Hyundai sees it drawing interest from shoppers of the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Scion tC, Honda Civic Si, Volkswagen GTI and Mazda RX-8.

Contrary to raging Internet rumors, the Genesis is not a replacement for the front-drive Tiburon. For clues to that model's future, Hyundai says to take a close look at the Veloster Coupe concept.

When the Genesis sedan goes on sale, fitted with a 270-hp version of the 3.8-liter V6, it will take the place of the company former flagship Azera sedan at the top of the Hyundai product line up. Azera, formerly significant as Hyundai's first vehicle to crack the $30,000 mark, will be deliberately skewed in product mix to more models in the mid-$20,000 range. As such, Azera becomes a more dead-on competitor for V6 Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

The 20-inch wheels and tires on the Genesis Coupe concept won't make production, but performance summer-only tires and 19-inch wheels will be offered as an option; 18 inchers will be standard. In addition, the car will feature independent rear suspension and MacPherson front struts, Brembo disc brakes at all four corners, and a limited-slip differential.

Estimated 0-60 mph time for the V6 coupe: less than 6 seconds.

So what else does Hyundai have planned for its all-new range-topping model line? All-wheel-drive for the sedan is possible, though not likely, says Krafcik, because so few buyers actually opt for the system. On the other hand, Krafcik would love to be able to make a case for a low-cost cloth convertible. Rear-drive ragtop, anyone?

Concept looks 1000x better than the production (assuming that the gray car is it). Too bad too, cuz the concept would make it one of the hotter sports coupes on the market.

CONCEPT GENESIS COUPE HIGHLIGHTS

Second rear-wheel drive performance car from Hyundai
300+ horsepower from enhanced 3.8-liter V6 from Genesis sedan
The production version of the sports coupe arrives in the spring of 2009
The Sonic Orange concept is complemented by a Ballistic Black carbon fiber hood, roof and ground effects for reduced weight. Strong hints of the production version are highlighted in its "Z" bodylines and powerful curves. When the production sports coupe arrives, it likely will be the most affordable 300+ horsepower car on the market, and the most dynamic performance car yet from Hyundai.

"Concept Genesis Coupe is the most thrilling, most emotional Hyundai yet," said John Krafcik, vice president, product development and strategic planning, Hyundai Motor America. "When it hits the market in early 2009, we aim to deliver a driving experience that challenges cars like Infiniti G37, at prices more like Mitsubishi Eclipse."

DESIGN PROCESS

"The mission for Concept Genesis Coupe was to create a pure performance car with a design that would capture the imagination of hardcore automotive enthusiasts," said Joel Piaskowski, chief designer at the Hyundai Design Center in Irvine, Calif. "With its aggressive look from just about any angle, I think we have been able to do that."

The powerful curves, surface detail and "Z" bodyside lines come straight from the same underlying inspiration that guided two earlier, well-received concepts: the HCD9 Talus and the HCD8 sports tourer. The undulating beltline borrowed from the Talus adds intrigue while enhancing outward visibility for both the driver and rear passengers. The HCD8 sports tourer's sensual body forms influenced the overall design theme while also providing direction for the concept's assertive headlight and taillight designs.

The look of Concept Genesis Coupe was in part inspired by LeMan's race cars, drifters and by Jada Toys Dub City***8482; die cast vehicles. The front and rear stance of the Concept Genesis Coupe can be described as sinister.

"Beauty and danger co-exist in the design of the Concept Genesis Coupe," said Eric Stoddard, senior creative designer. "When viewed from a distance, the car is beautiful to look at. But up close it can appear a bit menacing and even a little intimidating."

The concept's rocker panels are drawn close to the ground making the bodysides extra thick and the daylight opening extremely thin, allowing the wheels to be slammed up into bulging fenders. To complete the aggressive sports car look, the depth between the fenders and the greenhouse has been maximized.

Three large heat extractors sculpted into the hood are designed to cool just about any powerful engine. When the concept becomes reality, three large openings in the front fascia will allow for better engine breathing. The dual exhaust tips integrated into the rear fascia repeat the design theme of the front cooling ducts and are surrounded by a large carbon fiber air diffuser.

An arching roofline and tapering greenhouse highlight the exterior profile and emphasize the car's broad shoulders and wide stance. Concept Genesis Coupe rides on 20-inch polished aluminum deep-dish wheels with Hankook 255/35 ZR front tires and 275/35 ZR rear tires.

I could be wrong, but according to the video on autoblog during the introduction, a rep said the production version of the coupe would be unveiled at NY....I'm not sure what the picture of the silver car is

I think a lot of people have been pointing out the conspicuous lack of affordable RWD import coupe for years now.

My guess was either Mazda or Honda. I just didn't think that Hyundai will be the one to take that niche. This is a very good move to establish the brand name among the next gen of Americans.

i am betting the "silver" picture was for a informal customer survey response poll, that is why we also see a mustang in the picture...

They probably was doing it to gauge public opinion so they can make any last minute changes to the production model...

I never thought I'd like a hyundai. The concept looks really nice, hopefully more of the concept will make it to production than whats on the silver one. I really like the scoops on the side, though I would prefer it without the CF. The front is just badass on that concept.

The silver one is from a marketing forum back in June. The Orange car is closer to teh production car. It was just given some "Tuner Flair". Tone down the front a tad and replace all the CF and I'm betting you have a production car.

Good job Hyundai. I too thought Mazda was going to do it with the Kabura seems like H beat them to it.
