Speed enforcement in Phoenix Metro...
I wanted to start a thread in which we can exchange information that can help all of us to avoid tickets.
I've been using my Valentine One Radar for 6 weeks now this is what I found so far. 1. A lot of X and K band interference from door motion sensors. The K band interference is an issue because I think I found at least one cop that was using that. 2. Sheriff cars spew very strong K signal - I don't know what the hell is that all about? Are using speed radars? Do even do routine traffic violations? 3. Highway Patrol uses Ka band here. There is no mistaking that. 4. I had couple of LASER warnings but I think there were false alarms because I haven't ever seen a cop with a LIDAR here. I heard they don't use much of that here - Is that true? Anyway some information and some questions to start a discussion....

Who said that I speed? Cops can't really tell cars apart with a radar in congested traffic - so we are talking about wrongful convictions here....

Is this is just the standard issue equipment? I lived here for 4 years and drive on average 40 miles a day over most valley... I have never seen a LIDAR being used. |

Police using lasers to catch tailgaters in Arizona The Arizona Department of Public Safety has bought some laser devices manufactured by Laser Technology Inc. that have a feature allowing law enforcement to determine the distance between two moving vehicles remotely. This is allowing some officers there to issue tickets for tailgating with laser-sharp accuracy. Nine units have been purchased at a cost of almost $4,000 each and are in use in the Phoenix area. They have plans to use an $80,000 grant to purchase 19 additional units. Police are issuing $115 citations for following too closely, so it sounds like they have plans to be issuing a LOT of citations to tailgaters. From The Arizona Republic: Beaudoin, who is assigned to the East Valley, said the laser is most effective just before rush hour, when traffic is beginning to get heavy but is still moving fast. Typically, Beaudoin sets up on Loop 101. The laser is similar to a radar speed gun except it also can measure distance between vehicles. Beaudoin said he sets the gun to measure the distance from his position to the center of a traffic lane. When two cars pass that location, he uses the gun to track the speed of both vehicles and calculate the distance between them. The laser device, called a Lidar, is manufactured by Laser Technology Inc. of Colorado, which invented the radar speed gun. The Lidar is being used extensively in Australia, Canada and Hong Kong. The device also has proved popular among several police departments in Oregon. Unlike radar units for tracking speeders, the Lidar laser is much more accurate. For instance, a radar typically shoots a beam that is 12 feet wide at 100 feet. By comparison, the laser beam is only 3 feet wide at 1,000 feet. In addition to detecting tailgating, the Lidar device also can be used for speed detection and accident reconstruction. http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=2704246 New Tool to Prevent Tailgating The LIDAR Helps Officers Track and Ticket Drivers Frustrated, distracted and angry drivers cause 6 million accidents a year by speeding and falling asleep at the wheel. According to public safety officials, tailgaters are particularly dangerous. "Tailgating is the No. 1 cause of accidents," said Del Lisk, vice president of safety services for DriveCam, a developer of car safety technology. "Part of the problem is that people don't even know that they're doing it." In Phoenix, highway patrol officers are aggressively attacking the problem by using a special laser device called a LIDAR, which stands for Laser Imaging Detection and Ranging. The device works like a radar speed gun but measures the distance and time between cars. "Inside the unit, it will do calculations and tell me exactly how fast the vehicle was going and the distance between the front bumper of the first car and the front bumper of the second car," police Officer Anthony Gardinier said of the LIDAR. Beware Tailgaters "Good Morning America" went on patrol with Gardinier as he used the LIDAR to pull over tailgater Chris Houston. Houston was issued a fine of $115 and could get traffic violation points on his license. "I guess I'm just going to have to be aware of it," Houston said after getting his ticket. Police Detective Tim Mason says the LIDAR makes officers' jobs easier and says violators are less likely to fight their tickets. "It makes it more concrete for the judges and court system," Mason said. "We have something that's irrefutable." To avoid getting hit by the LIDAR on the road, stay at least three seconds behind the car in front in front of you. Doing so could prevent a ticket or a fender bender, and it could also save a life. http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/05/a...ab-tailgaters/ Arizona implements Lidar gun to nab tailgaters by Darren Murph, posted Dec 5th 2006 at 11:45AM While we can't say we're exactly fond of notorious tailgaters ourselves, we won't be the first to agree that fines in "the hundreds of dollars" are exactly fitting for those who like follow closely. Nevertheless, the Arizona Department of Public Safety is taking a note from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, and Oregon by implementing a radar-based tracking system to calculate just how far back a car is from another while cruising on the freeway. Laser Technology's Lidar (no known connection to Liger) works essentially like a speed gun, except it boasts a higher level of accuracy and the ability to calculate the distance between passing cars down to the tenth of a second. Arizona cops are reportedly loving the new machine, as it's "basically impossible" to argue with, and supposedly "educates the people who get pulled" because of it. So if you get a thrill from seeing just how close you can come to kissing that bumper ahead of you, or you just get a testosterone rush every time you get behind the wheel, you may want to put a few seconds (at least) between you and your closest roadmate when rolling through. |

The laser thing is crazy. The only logical way to stop tailgaters is break-checks. Lol.
