UPDATE:

It's been a while so I thought I'd give an update for those curious...

My motor blew at 1500 miles. Subaru's response and customer service was fantastic, they had the car back to me in one week and gave me a 7 year, 100k warranty without me asking. That said, I was completely soured on the car and wanted to sell it back or take the hit and get a nice used M3.

I decided to keep it and now I've got about 3400 miles on it (just under 2K on the new motor) and it's been fine so far. Pulls hard as ever. It pulls harder after break-in (As many motors will). It may even pull low 13's now dead stock...who knows. I'm just now beginning to trust / enjoy the car again after the frustration and dissapointment of a blown motor on a new car. I bought it in December...so that's 4 months until I felt comfortable enough to enjoy it again...but, I am having a blast with it. I've never driven anything faster point to point in the mountains. I can't wait to go Stage 1... 40+ horse. Yikes. Could be a Ferrari killer with that power...emphasis on "Could".

Mine is a 10/08 build sedan as well, so far so good, almost 5000 miles on the clock, also 507xxx. My fingers have been crossed since I read this thread but I didn't let it get to me, hoping the 10/08s don't make it to this list....love this friggin car.

I'm starting to see '09s at the dealer with VINs startin 820xxx and 512xxx. It seems things have been fairly quiet lately on the failure front front too. I'm hoping that this suggests a light at the end of the tunnel? Probably too soon to tell right now...

without an official recall from SOA, this is going to royally F up resale value on 09 wrx with blown engines.

non-nasioc buyers are going to carfax it, see the replaced engine, and assume the car was thrashed/abused and driven into the ground and they won't take the word of "intarwebs forums".

Add another to the list... Mine blew today with 4880 on the clock and an 08/08 build date.

Will report on SOA and Dealership tomorrow when I drop it off.

RadioFlyer69, sorry to hear about your WRX. Can you please post your VIN#?

Also, out of curiosity, what Subaru dealer in the Seattle area did you buy your WRX from and are you taking it back to that dealer?

Here is the VIN# 804411 notice that its only a couple of numbers from a previous one that blew.

Purchased at Carter in Shoreline. Will be dropping it off there as soon as the tow truck arrives.

I already have the extended warranty. I will be after the long block/turbo and some type of $$$ that will equate to the extended warranty.

Wondering if anyone wants to take over the 09 WRX failure list? I don't really have the motivation to do it anymore. PM me if you want to.

Mine just started making the noise this morning, 6194 miles on the clock, manufacture date is 08/08, vin is 801544. I got it flatbedded right away, but the dealership wont be able to examine it until tomorrow. I wish I could tell them to just order a new engine right now, but oh well. Will report on any findings tomorrow.

My hatchback did this to me in February. Rattling noise from the engine, required replacing. I'm happy I found this thread, the dealership couldn't explain it to me at all.

VIN ends in 804451, manufactured 08/08, ~1900mi (3000km)

I think you spoke too soon?

looks like we will be at 50 confirmed by the end of the week.

also i was thinking about the total number of cars failed (currently 47), but really the number of engines is 48. TuningIsLife blew two in one car!

About things quieting down recently? Definitely spoke too soon.

However, it seems the recent failures have still been in the early 08/08-09/08 build dates, which continues to give me hope (as a new owner of an 01/09 build date) that the problem is more or less confined to this time period.

Please don't make me eat those words too!

I think you are right about that. You'd think that the problem would be resolved by any 09 build dates (hopefully because my new motor should be ok then) .

I still don't quite know what to do about buying an '09. I went into subaru and cut a deal with them on a WRX....then I found all of this information out. Even though its a newer build, who says these engines don't blow up at 36,001 miles when the warranty is all gone?

By not saying anything at all Subaru has done a wonderful job at making me look at the EVO online! Don't get me wrong...I'm a Subaru nut...but what the F***?

Sorry guys, just depressed and venting over the whole situation...

I'm not updating the list every failure. I'm updating it every 5 failures or so. I already have recorded those recent 3.

I also just purchased (~3 weeks ago) an 01/09 build date WRX sedan. Just hit 1200 miles..so I too will keep my fingers crossed for both of us!

My wife's '09 WRX265 5dr just failed.

We bought it used from the dealership with 2500km on it (the guy traded up to a STI, I spoke with him over the phone before buying it yadda, yadda). Car drove fine up until today. I was pulling out of a side-street, gave it some gas, and on the shift to 2nd I heard a knock-whine, and after the shift to 3rd (@ about 60km/h) realized something wasn't quite right. On the way home, thankfully only about 3 km, the engine would knock-rattle on accel/decel above 2K rpm. I tried to keep it around 2.5k. My wife said she had heard a strange noise last week but it didn't persist and I didn't hear it when I drove it last.

Anyhow. Build date is 07/08, 13,300km. My VIN and build date puts me right in the middle of the list. The car has had 3 oil changes and runs Shell 91 (no ethanol). My wife daily drives it and it rarely ever sees anything near redline, even when she goes to pass someone. Car drove great.

I'm PMing Tea Cups with my info...sigh.
