Default If I get an Apexi SAFC for MY98 RS can I get any intake I want?

Hi people. I didn't get many responses to my last thread about whether to get an SAFC or jc sports chip. But it seems that people are saying SAFC is what my needs are suited for. My question is... if I get the SAFC am I able to put any intake on MY98 without having to worry about engine failure? (since I can correct lean problems with the SAFC) And does the SAFC come with general instructions on how to use it correctly? Thankyou very much in advance.

I don't know about the first question, but I can definitely give you a nice big fat "no" for the second question. I'm struggling with the same problem you are.

Yes, you can put any intake (made for you car) on and use the SAFC. You can correct both lean and rich fuel problems with the SAFC. Make sure that the intake you get is made for a MAF car since those are the ones that';ll work with your car. Also make sure that you have an A/F gauge and/or and EGT gauge to tune the SAFC. other wise it'll just be complete guess work and you'll run around in circles. In general, you want to tune the car to run at 14:1 A/F ratio ( a little richer for turbo'd or nitro'd cars). not sure the Exhaust Temp to shoot for. Any one recall?

Default Almost agree....

Aaron,

I almost was about to disagree with you but you said you can put an intake that is 'made for your car'. Seems like your are right there.

I'm using the JC Sports intake on my XT6 and it's running dangerously lean between 5k-6k right now. Apexi S-AFC is tuned to +50 between 4500-6000rpm and it STILL runs dangerously lean. I'm waiting on an EGT and fuel pressure gauge in the mail now. Also, I'm waiting on a fuel pressure riser now. Maybe this will cure the problem.

Damn so I still have to get a shotty intake (considering the ones made with MAF are limited to Weapon R basically). So answer me this then, what is the benefit of getting the SAFC then if it can't help the problems with the MAF?

First, you do not need a SAFC for your '98. Its a complete waste of money (I wanted one. Rallispec and others said it doesn't do a thing). Second, you can put any intake you want on your car because it doesn't have the self-destructing MAF of the 99+. If I recall, there's a Rallispec intake for sale in the private section for $200, a deal. Don't know what year its for though.

Stay away from the JC Sports intake. They had it on a AWD dyno out here, it lost HP throughout the entire range compared to a stock one.

Tangmere..... what about the JCSports chip? Is that a good way to increase hp in MY98? And who would sell it now since JCSports is no longer existing?

The SAFC just lets you control the amount of fuel the engine gets for a certain amount of air. If you don't know how much air the engine is getting,
all the computers in the world won't help you correct the A/F ratio.

The JC Sports Torque Chip II are being sold by me now, bought direct from the manufacturer, and you can find them at www.ImprezaRS.com/shoppingcart.htm - It will definitely help your MY98.

I also sell a MY98 intake on that web page that really seems to work well. Good gains without an S-AFC. Any car will respond to the torque chip, stock or modded, but you will be very happy combining the chip and the intake there. Yes indeed

In the cas o you MY98 impreza you hve to also remember that
this car has a MAF ensor and alot of intake "FOR" that car are not properly supported. Because of this engineerig fla the MAF sensor Breaks. Suking a good 300 buck to get it fixed. just keep that in mind when getig an intake.
