That's right. Also, a taller sidewall is useful in the winter, as they protect the wheels better when driving through winter potholes and hitting other obstructions that are hidden by the snow. My OEM wheels are 17", but I downsized to 16" wheels for my snow tires.

OK. I went with a 16" tire size that doesn't alter diameter or ground clearance.

Hmm, that's interesting. I think I noticed my snow tires have a little bit of a taller sidewall, and also flatter and not ballooning out like the OEM tire. I don't drive in deep snow often, ice and packed snow is the main thing I encounter in the winter here, and the snow tires make a huge difference, especially with braking. It snowed once in the spring this year after I already changed back to OEM tires, and the ABS went on whenever I tried to brake, even slight braking.

Oh, yeah I did. Nitto NT-SN2 tires which they recommended to me at Tires Plus. They were a little under $600 installed (on the OEM wheels). But they made a huge difference in braking and handling on snow and ice and they got me through some scary road conditions, so I think it was worth it. I'm sure you could spend less if you shopped around.

For those of you who used winter tires on this car, did you go down to 16's, or just keep 17's? I have 17x7.5's with 225/45 all seasons right now. I need tires soon. Contemplating the all-season vs snow tire situation right now. When it came to the stock Yoko's, I was fine accelerating, but the car was a bit skiddish when it came to braking and quick turning. I didn't have my "new" wheels and tires until after it stopped snowing. The tires are Hankook V4's. I've always done well with GOOD all-seasons on my FWD cars, so I assume good all-seasons will be fine with the AWD. But if you slapped some snows on the car, I'm sure it'd be pretty serious.

Snow tires on a AWD car are amazing. You certainly don't see as much snow in Pittsburgh as I do in NY, so you need to decide how often you need that kind of grip. Of course, I understand that one gnarly snowfall alone could justify the snows, but it's your call. Do you travel north much in the winter? If so, that could sway your decision too. Here's a video I made that you might be interested in: |

For the winter, I change out my stock 17" rims and tires for 16" steel rims and Winterforce tires. I hate having the TPMS light on in the winter, but I can't justify the cost of the sensors. I live in the "Snow Belt" south of Buffalo and would'nt use all season's because of the amount of snow we get here.

Here in Rochester, NY, I run with my winter set from Thanksgiving through tax day (mid-April). If I switched to my summer wheels/tires in March, I'd get caught in the last one or two major snow storms with the wrong tires on the car. |

For a while, having the tire pressure light on annoyed me. It really didn't take too long to simply get used to seeing it and then it became a non issue. The added expense of TPMS sensors coupled with reprograming just seems like a PITA. Once I reinstalled the all seasons, the light went back off anyway.
I have not really paid attention to weather or not someone has finally developed something for the home mechanic to use to reset them. If so, I might consider adding them to the winter rims. Otherwise, things are ok as is. Winter tires are a wonderful thing. John |

Ummm... I'd bet the snow he "sees" around Fl is more in lines, and not spread over the roads. My wife's gma was from Miami, I remember her having a nose bleed when she was like 96, and we met her at the ER. The doc said he would put cocaine up there to stop the bleeding. She asked him if it was the same as she had at her condo in Miami? We all died laughing. You would have to know her, fireball up till she died, and very very wealthy. She had a dance hall inside her house and hosted "dances" as she said. I think she was a hustler, lol. But epic moment when the ER doc looked at me like seriously WTF, then burst out laughing. Rofl

Yeah, I've been to Miami twice. Once to go to the keys, and once to go.one a cruise of the carribbean.
No "snow" to report but I'm sure theres always "fresh powder on the slopes" anywhere in South Fl. The real drug problem these days is the pill epidemic. Its worse than coke/crack. |

I officially decided on Michelin xi3's in 205/60/16. Will order later this week. They actually have a warranty (40k miles), and are supposed to be one of the quietest snow tires. Being as most of my driving is highway and it is usually clear to pavement w/in 3 days of snow it makes more sense to me to get these tires.
I should be able to get 4 winters out of them I think at 8-9k/yr average running them from thanksgiving through end of March. Possibly a 5th winter too but that is a long way away lol. Will cost about 90.00 more than the generals or the firestones I was looking at, but for quieter tread that seems like a good trade, plus I'm thinking one extra winter before replacement |

anyone looking for snow tires I found out 3 things today.
1. Blizzak's only have siping 1/2 the way down the treadblock, so essentially the last 1/2 of tread wear is considered normal all season and not snow tire according to Bridgestone. but installed today at Costco would be 480.12 2. Michelin's Xi3 have siping down to 2/32", so essentially entire treadlife of the tire. 3. Next month Michelin is supposed to have some sort of tire deal at Costco similar to Bridgestone this month (70 off instantly) I am going to get my tires from Costco, If i ordered them today I am looking at 618.00 out the door, but if I wait 2 more weeks I can get them for 548 out the door!!!! just the tires plus shipping from Tire Rack is 518. kinda a no brainer if you ask me! Thats what the guy told me too, just wait and get them next month when they are on sale. yes! |
