Need a little help. I bought into a mess I think.
OK so I picked up an 02 WRX with a 2.5 swapped in it. Apparently it has 850CC injectors, HTA68 turbo pushing 20 lbs, full turbo back, AMR inlet pipe, Greddy catchcan, evo 8 front mount and a few other small things. I was told it was tuned by PTUNING here in VA and it put down 333 AWHP and 333AWTQ. Here are my issues (Please keep in mind I'm COMPLETELY new to these cars and boosted cars in general), I have a cylinder 2 misfire but only at idle and under 3500 rpm or so. I have changed the plugs (NGK LFR7AIX gapped at 30) and when I did that I swithed the coil. I'm about to go hook up the code reader after I take her for a spin to see if it switched to a no.1 misfire. Full throttle the car moves out with no issues and no smoke out of the exhaust.
I am also having issues with the catch can (greddy). Air is blowing out of the breather hole, spraying oil mist everywhere. There is not a lot of oil in the can and the little bit that is in there, it's yellow so I assume that's fine. Possible PCV issue? I can feel air blowing out of it at idle. I think that's it for now. It's just going to take a little time to clean the bay up. Random vacuum lines and breather tubes running all over. I figured it wasn't a bad pick up for $4,000 with 126K on the body. Any help on either of the above issues will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Josh

Do your research. But start saving 4K or more.
As a personal opinion, do not go back to that tuner. PM me if you REALLY want to hear why. |

I have a buddy that is pretty well skilled with these cars. We can probably pull the motor. It's just going to be a daily for my girlfriend, so I really don't want to drop a ton of money into some nasty build. This sucks... lol.

Add a couple more grand for labor if you aren't going to do the swap yourself. Plus another k for random things going wrong. Ask me how I know.

What I don't get is that it's kinda intermittent... sometimes if doesn't misfire at all and sometimes it bucks really hard and then full throttle it pulls like a raped ape. I'm just lost.

That's one thing I was wondering. When I first got the car, I pulled the plugs expecting to see the 2.0 plugs because I figured it was a hybrid. But the previous plugs were for a 2.5. Is there a casting number I can see somewhat easily on the heads?

If the rings were fried like that, would I see smoke out of the exhaust? And oild consumption? I don't have either of those symptoms. Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions.

Compression test and or leakdown test asap before you start drive and/or run the car anymore that will answer a lot of is the motor blow questions.

Shop around: refreshed Shortblock should be 1600-2000, depending, with forged pistons if cranks in good shape. This should be with machining, bearings and assembly. Refreshed heads if all is good 350-400 for the pair. Assuming you do the pulling, delivering, and reinstall.
Pull it out and fix it or sell it. Besides the obvious rings/piston issues. Valve issues can give you constant mis-fires. Leakdown would help you pin point what's going on with #2. Quote:

I took my oil cap off while running and it seemed like there was a fair amount of air coming out of there. No oil, doesn't seem like nasty air. My car is stock and consumes zero oil. I would do compression / leakdown test to know for sure how toight the engine is. And, even it if isn't totally amazing and tip top, it might run for 75k more and not blow up. Check oil level every time you fill up to start, and then as you get an idea as to the level of oil consumption you can check less often. Good luck with the car. 330 hp and tq sounds like a blast. |

I gotta say that I'm really impressed with how helpful you guys are. I really appreciate all the good info. Hopefully ill do a compression test this week and go from there. Fingers are crossed. Ill also look at the casting number on the heads to see if I need to grab the other plugs.

Most important thing is to stop driving it until you find the problem.
You could end up killing a good motor by driving it. |
