It is a bad idea and if, as a parent, you buy one, you will regret it.

I wish my parents would have bought me a car, any car. But I would have most likely would have wrecked it. I was such a terrible driver when I was younger. RA doesn't let rookie drivers use awd turbo cars for a reason, they might handle better than fwd/rwd cars but you can get in worse predicaments with them easier. If I were to buy a kid a car it would be an underpowered pos.

Both my kids first vehicles were 6 year old Jeep Wrangler soft tops, 4 bangers with stock gears, 5 speeds and 30 inch tires. I also removed the back seat for the first year to limit passengers. Kept them out of trouble pretty much.

I wrecked my dads ver. 8 swapped bugeye years ago. He then parted out/sold everything off except for the engine. He then bought a 2002 WRX with a spun bearing to put his EJ207 into. I decided he didn't want to put the EJ207 into that, so I did all the labor on getting that engine running and then adopted it. I wrecked that car about a year after wrecking my dads.

Its been a few years since ive wrecked a car, and now I have a 04 wagon, and the ability to pull a Subaru engine in 3 hours. Dad has yet another bugeye with his EJ207.

Would I buy my child a STi? Depends on how badly I need lawn art.

I used to work in a photo lab back when pictures were taken on film (yeah, I'm old) and developed all the pictures for the local highway patrol office as well as the PD and Sheriff's office. I can't tell you how many times I saw fatal accidents involving young men doing stupid stuff. (And yes, I think young women are worse drivers, I just didn't see them killing themselves or others as much)

One accident that always sticks with me involved a HS senior and a female friend of his. Shortly after summer had started his dad had left for a few days, leaving his new Z06 behind. The two of them decided to go for a joy ride and he lost control of it on a 35 mph corner and hit a tree. I don't remember his speed at the time but the car was split in half and they both died. I still see the girl's mom from time to time and the look of permanent grief that she has is a painful reminder of teenage stupidity and immaturity.

To give a young person a powerful car is asking for trouble. Your kid might get lucky or might be more mature than his peers, but it's still a needless risk.

I'd buy my kid a Toyota tercel or a Chevy vega. You know, a real hunk of ****. That way later he can buy his own sti and will know to take care of it. If you buy him an sti as his first car, you really think he will respect it?

I bought my daughter a 95 Tercel.

Three forward gears, two airbags, and one anemic engine. It's perfect.

I think it depends on your kid... Personally im 18 my first car was a 260 whp neon srt4 , then a 400 hp sti, then a 250 hp civic si and now a audi tt 225. All paid myself . Never got a ticket or a close call.. Dumbest thing was hitting a sidewalk that was hidden undersnow with my sti while drifting in a parking lot

260...400...250...225. By the time you're Jack's age, you'll be in a 80-horse hybrid.

I went looking at motorcycles this weekend, saw two parents trying to get their teenage kids on brand new crotch rockets, parents today must be nuts!

So lets see...

Statistically all 16 year olds will have a wreck according to my brother the insurance agent. My two boys did not. they both had a 2.5rs or a WRX as their primary vehicles. I taught both to drive. One was just incredibly careful and the other was just a good driver, but I don't think that had anything to do with it. Teenagers brains just aren't finished developing and some just make stupid decisions. Add that with a little bad luck and boom!

Nothing like bashing people who happen to be fortunate. Just a bunch of bitter people who wish someone had given them an STI. For those who say you wouldn't take a free STI tell your lies somewhere else.

Who cares how anyone got their cars on this website. We all have the same/similar passions for subarus or we wouldnt frequent NASIOC.

a search would have yielded all the people who already gripe about this on a regular basis.
the argument went completely over your head.

I did a trunk swap with a Nasioc member. Hr was a young guy, his dad bought him the car. But they had a cool bond over it. They both wrench on it together. The kid is also very responsible with it. I was surprised. His dad said in the last two years his son hasn't been pulled over once.

My pops and I have a bond over subies as well. But I'm pushing 30. My first car was a Subaru legacy and my second was an outback. My whole family drives subies.

Christ, I'm damn near 30 and I've just bought my third subie. You need to slow it down, unless you just lease em. But I highly doubt that if you've modified them so much.

No way unless they pay for it. My first car was an old trooper with a blown head gasket. My dad said. If you can fix it, its yours. So I wrenched it with my friend and a manual from checkers and got it running. 8 years later I was able to afford a subaru. If I would've asked for one in high school I think my dad would have taken me to rehab for drug use.

If a kid is going to kill himself in a WRX he can do it in a geo. Its more about the financial aspect for me. MTV has programmed kids into thinking they get a sports car at 16. Not true.

A few years back on Car Talk, someone called in asking them to recommend a good, slow car. It was a parent who wanted a vehicle for their "knucklehead teenage kid" (aren't they all?). They suggested an old Volvo 240. Safe as hell and slow as death. Perfect!

No way! When I buy a car its MY car. I give gas money to my kids not cars. I also put them in one of MY cars that I feel is suited to their responsibility. I never let them drive anything that has a loan on it. At the end of the day my kids are greatful that the didn't have to bum a ride or walk.

The only way I'd give my kid an STi is if flash it and put it in valet mode. If I had an STi growing up, I'd probably be wrapped around a tree right now.

That being said, when my kids start driving I'm going to wrap them in the biggest, safest car with the smallest motor I can get my hands on. Regardless of how good of a driver they are, I don't trust the other drivers on the road.
