Default I'm about to give up on aquariums.

Last night I walk into my kitchen to see my fish in my nanocube laying on their sides dying. I had just tested everything in the ****ing thing, and everything was OK.

So, in an attempt to get them out of the obviously toxic environment, I moved them into the 55gal that I was planning on using as a FOWLR tank. Everything seemed to recover extremely well. Both fish were immediately up and swimming.

Not so much this morning. My yellow tang is about to peace out, but the percula clown is still very much alive. I don't get it. All of my inverts are FINE, and the Tang seemed to be, only now not so much. Is there any saving this little guy?

Everything has been in the cube for 4+ months with no problems (as far as the animals go)

Yes, you can. However, if your cat can get past my dog to retrieve said fish, it would be nothing short of a miracle.

I has 3 kills so far this year.

That, and...the only thing harder to keep than full size Tangs are baby Tangs!

4 months is not very long, I mean, i have no idea how much experience you have with these things, but it takes close to a month just for the tank to cycle, preferrably more, then after that it's a very slow addition of animals as time goes by, by 4 months I don't think you'd have a whole lot in the tank. Plus, the smaller the tank, the more suceptible it is to chemical instabilities and other water chemistry problems, so you have to be extra careful.

What's your temperature like? If it's getting too hot in the summer, bad things can happen, especially if you don't have a ton of water movement at the surface for gas exchange. When the temp goes up, dissolved o2 goes down, and fishys can feel the squeeze relatively early, compared to inverts.

baby tangs are very hard to keep... but yellow tangs are the more hardy ones out of the tang family. I think water temperature might have caused this that will also lead to not having enough oxygen in the water. What else is in the cube and what size is it? was there anything that was sprayed in the air new the kitchen? as sometimes sprays like that get into the air and get mixed into the tank.

ok, i'll try to give you guys some more details to help out.

everything used to be kept in a 55gal reef tank. clown, tang, mushrooms, anemone, crabs, snails, etc. they were in this tank for 1.5 years, and everyone did just fine.

i moved, and couldn't take the 55 with me, so I bought the 12gal nano. i transferred the sand, some rock, the water, filter media etc into the nano to make sure it was as stress free as possible. This was in March. They managed to live it up just fine until last night. The tank is well maintained, the temp is at 75.

The only thing I'd done to the aquarium in the past few days was treat it for slime algae. I turned the filter off, but supplied oxygen via airstone. Everything was still fine. I did the water change the day before yesterday. Then, last night my roommate walks in and tells me that both fish are in their dying. I quickly transplant them to the 55gal tank which had been cycling for almost a month and a half. I threw a bunch of free snails I got in there, and they've been a-OK for about a week, so i figured the water was ready for fish.

Everything else in the 55 is fine. The mushrooms have bloomed back up, the anemone is spread out, and all of the snails/crabs are rockin it out.

do you have a thermometer in the tank? Especially with small tanks, temp can rise very fast

is your house air conditioned? The only reason I'm harping on this is that it's the most common thing I have to watch out for in my tank, and I live in New England, so it's gotta be even hotter where you are.

Okay, just noticed that you are from Marietta, GA. There is a fish shop in Alpharetta that is awesome and helped me with my tank when my fish kept croakin'. It's called Aquarium showcase. I can't remember what road it's off of but there is a big Wal Mart in front of it.

also, I gotta tell ya, you can never give up. My friend Josh suffered a catastrophic failure over the 4th of july weekend in which the power failed while we were away, and we returned home to 20 gallons of brown goo and the stench of death. About 4 small corals survived, while probably better than $1000 of various livestock did not. We're redesigning a bigger system and hope to have it cycling within the next week or so
