Post Whats it take to make a 22b?

Engine wise. I am new to the field of Impreza's and so far I've learned that the P1, and the 22B are among the finest Impreza's built. So what does it take to make these? Once I locate an Impreza, and begin working on it in a few months, I will have a fairly large financial reserve for the upgrades and mods.

What all would I need? Or, if you think this is a bad idea, what would you suggest I mod it to?

nearly impossible to make a 22B. you need extended fender flares, extended suspension arms, drivetrain...etc.
P1, get a BRP RS, get the P1 wing, OZ P1 wheels, front grill, spoilers, STi brake....etc. I think.

If it just the look you are after, I suggest you just keep the RS original, or you might get called "r*ice"

You cannot make a 22B.. There were only ever 424 made worldwide..

What you can make is a poor copy of a 22b

I'm not soo horribly concerenec about making the body 22Bish, but whats supposed to be one of the best engine set up's in this car? I'm not going for a drag racer, I want this car to rally, just as it was designed for.

Thumbs up

If you are looking to make BIG power from your 2.5, I would look to Jun. They have done some crazy things with Subie engines! Good luck.

p.s. Richard, you 22B owners get so defensive when someone wants to make their car look like yours. Jeez!

While 22B is definetely a fine car, I would rather see you build a Type RA Impreza.

Type RA Impreza? What is this? I appologize, I am still trying to learn. I don't think I would want to sink more then 15K into the engine unless there is a reeeeeeeally good reason to.

The Type RA is a sedan that comes VERY stripped out from the factory, so it doesn't weigh much. Crank windows, no a/c, etc. I believe it comes from the factory with the cool roof vent, too. I'm quite certain that Alex knows more about the specifics of that particular car than I do. Think of it as the Subaru rally version of the Neon ACR (and NO I am not comparing the Subie to a Neon!). Hope that helps.

My Imperza will be a daily driver first. A show car second, and a rally car third. I will rally it, and I will not sacrafice show for function, I will just build show first. And no, it will not be rice, don't worry.

Well... if I were out to make a 22b replica, there's a guy on the board, stever, who is in the process of making carbon fiber 22b style fender flares. You'd also need wheels with a different offset. New struts and springs, but other than that, you don't need to do much to the suspension.
As for the engine, if I were you I'd get a 2.2L block and take it to Trey Cobb. He specializes in the 2.5L block, but from talking w/ him, there are only minor differences between any Subaru block, but the smaller displacement engines do have thicker cylendar walls. The STi's blocks(not the internals, I'll get to that) have some differences too, but I don't think they'll make much difference. If you've got the money, he can close the deck, and install oil squirters. Then have him rework the heads or get his reworked 2.5L heads w/ turbo cams, new pistons, rods and some of the other things he has. Get a Vishnu performance turbo kit(or a custom kit, if you have the resources). I'm pretty sure if you do this right, you could be pushing the 400hp mark, maybe more.
Oh, one last thing... give it to me. =)

If you go to www.cobbtuning.com you'll see the specs for the rally car he prepped. Trey is a great guy, if he can do something for you, he'll tell you, no BS. Stand up guy. If your really serious, why not just import a nice 99 sti motor with all the goodies and have it installed. PM me if your interested in that. I have a nice contact for that. Impresive98RS has a nice STI motor on the way from the same guy.

I posted this awhile ago in another forum but it might help:

get a 1993 Impreza as stripped as possible ($4,000.00 - $6,000.00), go for the full JDM conversion ($11,000.00 - $14,000.00). Total: $15,000.00 - $20,000.00! Oh wait! that is what I should of done. D'OH!

Well, if you plan to rally, even as a third option, i dont see how you could go and show the car as well, since show cars rarely get driven around town much let alone rallied...

Or do you mean something other than "expensive paintjob/rims/interior" kind of show?

wop: Obsession? No, I just know nothing about Impreza's, and I know that everyone talks about it. I assumed it had to be a good car since everyone is soo envious of it. Something that it isn't? No, I just like the looks of the panels. Like I said-show car before rally.

Prog: You do have a good point, and a valid worry. I don't mean I plan on entering it in shows, I just mean that I will do the cosemetic upgrades that I like before I do suspension, and motor work. I'm a sucker for attention, and I can't really go making this car rally only, so I might as well have it look good before it goes fast. I know the car handles damn well stock, and for me-looks are very improtant. I will have a paint job that will be an eye catcher, but I will not spend too much on it, because like you say, rallying will screw it up. I also plan on rims-but I will prolly end up with the prodrive ones, so they are good, strong, rims that look good, nothing big and heavy and chrome. The interior-well, I don't know, I am planning a basic stereo for it, but I will want the subs to remove easily for when I do take it rallying...

I'm still doing a lot of thinking, I just know it will be fully custom when I am done, and I still have a lot of time to think about what I want to do.

Just pull a Gary (myself here) get an STI motor, tranny, etc. all the goodies that go with it, SCCA Pro-rally legal cage, some nice big rally "krap flaps " and a couple rims..Supert's for Tarmac/streetracing/show, the stockers for auto-x, another set of stokcers or 15" steelies with gravel tyres.

There you go, show the car as a Rally car (which mine will be ) you can still daily drive it, and rally the punks butt out of it that way you can take a grease pen and write funny ancidotes or such on the scratches describing how they happened...and why this is function before form...thats what i am doing anyhoo.

If you want to get the engine as close as possible to that of a 22b, import a version 5 STI EJ20 complete with turbo setup and all... Then get an EJ22 shortblock from an older legacy turbo. Build up that block with some quality connecting rods and forged pistons. (8:1 CR if you want to try to duplicate the 22B) The turbo EJ22 block is closed deck, and actually quite similar to that found in the 22B. If you do this you will have a similar block, similar quality internals, same heads, same turbo setup as the 22b. If you wanted to go all out, get the red cambelt cover from the 22B. You can see it at: http://www.racebreed.com/sti03b5.htm. As for the turbo, it should be either an IHI VF23 or IHI VF22. Some 22B's came with the 22 and some with the 23. It seems that most have the 23, but the 22 is a better match for the engine. Done right, it would be a fairly decent copy. Also get a tranny out of an STI type RA to get the shorter gearing found in the 22B. And much as other people have mentioned... before doing anything give Trey Cobb a call... He could definitely set you up right.

Yes, I have already spoken with Stever about those panels. I fully plan on getting that kit as soon as he has it out. I've also spoken with him about the different size wheels that would be needed. I am primarily concerned about the engine in this post.

Thanks

I am sure you could get ample power out of a ej20 or ej25. IMHO I think you have a obsession with the 22b, no?

just curious...

why do you want your car to look like something it isn't?

Yes they were based on the STIv4 block.

Pretty good specs can be found at www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm and at in the tech notes on www.22B.com

Although even these specs don't cover such things as the special valves that were used and the fact that the gears are heat treated etc etc etc..

Building a 22B engine to the correct or modified spec is very expensive just ask some of the 22b owners in the UK.
