Exposure looks pretty good. I'd move the car a tad to the left in the frame, and you've got some weird thing on the right side leaking into the frame that you can clone out. If you want to get real ambitious, you might try cloning out the fence in the background.

I love the angle and the colors. The saturation is quite nice and the lighting on the car looks great! It's always tough to shoot under trees on a rig shot though, because all the branches and such give a very shaky look that kinda hurts the eyes. Also, over the rear spoiler of the car is a really blown out highlight that also seems to leak into the clouds above it too. I might try cloning in more trees to fill in that spot, which will also make the green fringing on the rear spoiler a little less noticeable.

I know people are going to say the sky is blown out...but I did it on purpose. This is one of those "breaking the rules" times that I did off of my own personal preference.

The whites look a little blown out, but overall pretty nice. What did you use to light it?

I think the whites look alright, but the yellow in the headlights is a bit intense. Overall, looks pretty good though.

Went for another drive this morning. I don't do profile shots all that often so I tried out one...

I really wish the wall wasn't so close in color to the car.

That is actually exactly why I picked that area.

I guess this is the best way I can put it.

There are certain mechanics to a great photo. These rules of the road are the starting point when getting into photography that helps you develop an eye for the shot. However, at some point in time, you also have to know when to break or bend the rules to really step outside of the box and produce an experience...not just a photo that follows all of the rules.

With photography, you want the viewer to pull themselves into their own world and develop their own story. This was really hard for me coming from the video side of things where you want to make people see your world...not develop their own.

In the case with this sequence (along with the sunrise one), I really wanted there to be a mood set with the images along with the car. By having the closely colored wall, the industrial/moody look is really pulled out and keeps everything on the same pallet. Is there less contrast? less separation from the background? Yes...but if there was more of both...the mood of the scene would drastically change.

I also semi cheated. There are too friends of mine that are pros that have implemented very close examples to this sequence by using color similar industrial backgrounds.

Hope this doesn't offend, but the last two shots posted of Jeff-Ling are crap IMO.
Look like snapshots, the two similar ones you posted of the GTR are much better.

I appreciate the explanation rsutton. It's nice when people actually explain their intentions instead of just saying " That's the way I wanted it and I don't care." I was not by any means calling them bad photos or anything, it just came down to personal preference but after your explanation I look at them different now. I always like your stuff and am very jealous of the cars you get to shoot!! I'll be in Georgia in July, I want a ride in a GT-R !

Anytime. I think it is really easy to get caught up in the technical with photography when it comes to composition, shooting and equipment. At the heart of it...photography is an art...and we should try to not forget that when shooting. I try to think through each sequence with a goal in mind, so I ask myself a lot of questions before I even pick up the camera. What is my goal? What story do I want to tell? What part of the action do I ultimately want to capture? What are the images going to be used for? Answering those kinds of questions before clicking the shutter button can improve your shots just as much as the mechanics. I personally feel that a great shot should make the viewer feel something. If I haven't accomplished that...it wasn't a good shot for me.

Went out shooting for a little bit with Robb's comments in mind. I tried to do something a little different (even though it's my same boring car) I tried to get the feel of a run down, abandoned, over grown area which is why I have the grass in the bottom of the frame. Thoughts?

So here is the way I see it. By putting the grass in front of the car...you made it the focus instead of the car because it blocks most of it making the car look out of focus. That location has a ton of potential especially with your car color. I would try more to set the scene. It's a change in thinking so keep it going!
