From the picture posted above you can see that all duty handgun rounds pretty much act the same. That's because they were specifically designed to penetrate a certain amount. All good hollow point ammunition is designed to penetrate no less that 12 inches and no further that 18 inches in ballistic gel. This gives the optimal amount of penetration into bad guys in real life shootings. That being said there is nothing text book or predictable about a gun fight. Bullets like to ricochet off of bone a lot, especially the hard thick bones of the face and skull.

If you don't include deaths by suicide involving firearms you would actually be shocked at how low the mortality rate truly is. mostly because of shot placement due to stress (and lack of stress fire training). You can have the worlds best most effective bullet in the world, if you don't hit your target it makes no difference.

Even that study had the average mortality of around 25 percent. That doesn't include accidents which are usually not fatal.

With all this talk about defensive rounds, I would like to point out that I am more than satisfied about using my five seven as my daily carry gun for any self defense situation I forced to deal with ( I hope that I never have to )
That said, I do only carry EA's ammo for self defense. |

I guess I'll leave home defense to the the Mossberg 500 and its 00 buck loadout then.
Also, range report on the CZ 75 P07 Duty, .40 S&W: It's awesome. Seriously, it is. Felt great, less recoil than I expected, 0.00 malfunctions, I was decently accurate with it (this is impressive because I can't shoot). I shot a friend's Glock 27 the same outing, and I couldn't hit the giant dirt hill that was our backstop. Awful. I also shot my other friend's .45 1911 (which I found surprisingly controllable) and my GP100 .357Mag/.38 special, And I still like my GP100 the best but the CZ is a close second. I would say the only non-positive (not negative) on this gun is take-down, which pretty much requires tools and would be difficult to do in the field unless you at least had a punch/phillips head and a hammering device. |

Got my rifles all set up.
First is my Colt 6920 sporting a KAC rail, Tango down stubby grip, YHM can, Trijicon ACOG TA-31RCOA4 USMC model, and a standard military sling. The back up sight is currently on my work gun until I can get one for it. Second is my work Bushmaster heavy barrel. Its sporting a Magpul MOE forend with some no name grip, Streamlight SuperTac flashlight in a Daniel Defense mount, Aimpoint PRO, Troy back up iron sight and Vtac sling. I will be replacing the back up sight with a Daniel Defense unit and the Troy will be going back on the Colt. |

Thanks. I did pull that one to the right pretty bad though. Overall it was a good training day. About 105 degrees out and the jogging gets the heart rate up. We did this drill several times and when the other guy was shooting you had to run with him.
Drill was: 2 rounds at 50 yards run to 25 yards 2 rounds at 25 yards run to 10 yards 5 rounds at 10 yards while walking towards the target transition to handgun and fire 5 rounds |

Speaking of the heat, I went to a class in Las Vegas, and they were saying they have problems with primers popping out of .223 brass when temps get up to 115*. I've never shot a lot in that type of heat, but it's something to think about.

I've never heard of primers coming out at high temps... sounds more like defective hand loads that just don't have primers and missed q.c. inspections. The bullet would be more likely to come out before the primers they are seated with less pressure than the primers...

My guess was a heat sensitive powder that was causing over pressure of the case. |

But, the main point is, they didn't say anything about 5.45x39. Better round, all-around.

Okay, random change of direction in the thread....
I am getting ready to leave to the Yavapai College gunsmithing program... I need to find a beat up old remington 700 in a magnum caliber to pick up... caliber doesn't matter... as far as finish, the uglier the better... stock doesn't even need to be intact... I just need a magnum barreled action lol... If any one knows of anyone with a beaten battered old 700 sitting in their or even a friends safe that they want to off load email or pm me please... i only have a couple months to dredge one up... and i will even take before and after pics of it.... |
