300 subaru bucks...what to buy?
Ok, so I have an 04 FXT, no mods. I have 300 subaru bucks and am thinking of buying the rear sway bar and having it installed in my next service...is this a worthwhile mod, and if not, what else would you recommend?

I'd recommend that you buy the sway bar, end links, and STi sway bar mounts, save yourself some Subybucks, and do the install yourself. It's so easy, just get your trunkmonkey assistant to help you.

I'd go for the autodimming mirror/compass and the rubber rear bumper guard. STi takeoff sways can be had for $75.

Is there a noticeable difference in ride/handling with the sway bar? Also, I know almost nothing about mechanical stuff, would it still be easy to install? BTW what is a trunk monkey?
I've got dimming mirror, that came factory. It is a great option, never had it before. |

Sway improves roll angle during cornering w/out detracting from ride. Definitely, go for the short shifter setup. Since you don't have a trunk you will need to borrow someone else's trunk monkey. They mostly are used to shift weight during tight turns and require little more than an occasional case of beer to do the most onerous of tasks.

I've heard of problems with an upgraded swaybar on the FXT. Look at the rest of the suspension, the endlinks and trailing arms aren't up to it (check out the cheap little welding!)

Many use Poltech endlinks w/ the 20 mm STi takeoff. OEM Trailing arms are good to go.

I used part of my $400 Subarubucks to buy FXT STi springs from Jamie. The install is a piece of cake if you have spring compressors and airtools (good spring compressors cost about $50). stiffer ride but not too stiff.. less brake dive too.

Sway bars would be the first thing I would do. In fact the was the first thing I did. You can use STi takeoff sway bars. But I would buy a good set of hollow tube bars. I drive my car pretty hard and so far my factory endlinks and mounts are still in good shape. Another mod the can be done fairly cheap is, if you would to lower your car a little you can get a set of 04 WRX struts and springs for $200. They also have better dampening qualities compared to the Forester struts. -ED- Also with swaybars you will notice the difference on the first drive after the install :}

The rear sway bar is not a part available specifically for the Forester. It is for the STi sedan, so your dealer may not install it unless they're just really cool.
I bought mine from SubieGal (allsubaru.com) and installed it using scoobymods.com. I learned how to do my first sway bar install (WRX), by using scoobymods. I would probably go with the F-STi springs, but it depends what you want. -Dennis |

Hey thanks for all the input. I don't drive my FXT too hard, as I use it as my commuter car on a long stretch of highway. Swaybar might be the way to go. I also might check in them throwing on a tow-hitch. Not exciting, but practical. Kind of like my auto transmission. After 2 years with a modded '94 Audi S4, I miss the shifting.

if you upgrade the sway bar you need to upgrade the mounts. after 10k miles the swaybar mounts cracked and the left one broke loose. the banging noise will scare the poop out of you. i also changed the end links because the broken mount bent one. the stock end links are what comes on the sti so i think the should hold up.

I think you should get Poltek adj. endlinks w/ STi rear sway--go to subaruforester,com for details.
