strange issue..freaking me out need help asap.
Ok.
So I was on the highway yesterday and ever about a 100 mph give or take drive to my friends house: When I got back to the house, I noticed the car making a metal on metal vibrating noise. Thought nothing of it. Driving home, I noticed it every time I first got on the gas after a shift, or when taking the throttle off the engine. Driving at a normal speed, or speeding up did not make any sound at all. Only when I took off the gas or reapplied it. At idle it is making a metal on metal knock sound also. Any ideas? Kinda freaking me out. Back story, 2005 WRX I DO NOT beat on this car. It has 24k miles on it, timely Mobile 1 synthetic oil changes, and my daily driver. Just gave alittle gas tonight. Now, I DID fill up at a somewhat "questionable" gas station today only cause it was WICKED cheap. 93 octane BTW. Is this bad gas related knock? The turbo is just fine, but the note from the exhaust is FAR from smooth. Good it just be bad gas? Or something vibrating in the chasis area? Or is this is a bigger concern that I need to worry about? Cheers Last edited by willguidry; 09-05-2006 at 12:13 AM. |

Possibly a flange
I had a similar experience that turned out to be...my up-pipe had come loose of it's lower flange (took forever to figure out, I kept thinking something was wrong with my turbo, cause that was the general direction of the sound, even though there weren't any performance issues) had to remove the up-pipe, and weld it back together. Something to check at least.

uhmmm
Yeah....so the catback DID move in. I moved it out. Started up the car, and this horrendous knocking is coming from IN the engine bay. It isn't the heat shield, I held it down, as well as put my hands on everything IN the engine bay. Nothing stopped rattling. It sounds like it is IN the engine. Any more thoughts please? Oh, and it's LOUD. |

does it sound like its coming from the center of the engine? possibly rod bearing. i spun a rod bearing at 24k miles. get ready to drop some cash if it is.

Well...
I guess the good news is it's leased. I'm not paying a damn thing to get it fixed. Though, honestly, IMO....this shouldn't happen. I would expect it to happen to a Dodge Neon or something.... Am kinda turned off by subarus at the moment. I've done nothing but babied this car, it's a daily driver I drive on the highway about...30 mins each day. Piss poor if you ask me. |

Here is a video with sound. It is coming from underneath the intercooler area. If that helps any. I did an "ECU" reset, and the knock is quiter now. Good it be bad gas? I just filled up my tank last night to full, again as I said, from a less reputable dealer than normal. Both because of it's price, and the fact that I was on E with no other choices around. Thoughts? |

bad gas sometimes makes your valves tick, but if its loud I doubt its that.... try putting something else in it..... i know for a fact my friends mustang would tick (relatively loud too) if he ever ran 87

Rod's a knockin! Time for a swap. That happened to me when I had the similar sound that came from "inside" the motor as you say. But then, you say its leased.

Before you deam it a blow motor do you think you could have cause an exhaust leak moving the exhaust around?
From the video to me it sounds like an exhaust leak or valve tapping. Usually if your low on oil they will all tap but check it anyway even though you probably already have... What are all your mods? You say you have TBE, up and no EM or did you not mention it? Obviously if you dont have EM on an 05 with TBE you dont really need to beat on it to blow it. Not usually to big of an issue but running it too 100+ you could really lean it out between the 4-5 shift... Keep us updated... |

+1 pull your heat shield and look at the inside I bet you see a spray of dark where the DP to turbo gasket has a leak. Maby

Which increased with speed and sound the higher the RPM.
I double checked the oil, reads full when car is off. Opened the oil fill while car was idling, and did NOT notice any smoke, or any other fluctuations in the fill tube. Felt the uppipe once the heat shield was removed, and felt no obvious movement. Also while car was at idle, felt no exhaust gas. So the dealership is literally 3 mins from my house. I'm going to limp her in tomorrow, and let them have at her. Last edited by willguidry; 09-05-2006 at 12:06 AM. |

I thought that was it. Sorry you are still hearing knock. You will need to replace the gasket. Good luck!!!!
Check the bottom of up-pipe as well (let it cool and start and feel around) Top of up-pipe is what I ment to say. Last edited by Rally Time; 09-04-2006 at 06:52 PM. |

Yeah.. a DP missing a bolt wouldn't make a consistent noise like that, if any.
