Default Are tints really that bad?

Just got pulled over and lectured on dark tints. Cops always complain how they can't see when approaching a vehicle. Even if my fronts aren't tints the back be as dark as you want... how's this make sense? All I'm saying is if I roll down my windows when you're approaching is it that big of a deal?

In the words of Jim Carey, "Stop breaking the law ***hole!" lol

I've had every car that I've owned tinted so far. With that said when I get a ticket for it, I don't argue, I know what I've done wrong, the law is the law. It does cause a safety issue for officers who can't get a visual on a suspect when approaching the car. A number of years back an officer on the park way was shot while approaching a darkly tinted car and that's one of the main reasons these laws are in place.
I myself roll all the windows down, turn all the interior lights on, radio down and wait patiently with the keys out of the ignition while waiting for them to approach.
9 times out of 10 if you were pulled over for an offense other than the tint, the officer will kindly offer a tint ticket as opposed to the original offense which is more than fair in most cases.

I agree and my dad is a retired cop. So I understand concern for officer safety, but me rolling my windows down once being lit up is no different than a suv, van or whatever else with the backs tinted out.

I believe 35% on the rear windows is legal in both NJ and NY, and that's plenty dark, IMO.

You can tint all rear windows whatever percentage you'd like. You just can't tint driver and front passenger windows

i have 55% front and 20% rear. i've been pulled over twice and both times in the nighttime, and both times they shined their spotlight through the rear window. but otherwise, never mentioned my tint. next time, i'll turn on the dome light in addition to me rolling down my windows and shutting off the car

The officer does have a point and they do limit visibility. That being said, it is a risk you take when you get tints. I have 20% all around (minis front windshield) and luckily for me I had yet to get any problems from from cops regarding my tints. But I'm starting to think that has more to do with the fact that I'm a female.

I had 5% all around on my previous car and got pulled over 20min after getting them done. Since you are suppost to leave th windows closed for like 2 days, I opened my sunroof and told the cop thru the sunroof that I had just the windows tinted if it was ok for me to open the door instead! He started laughing his **s off. Lol. he let me go.

This was like at 11am in a very quiet neighborhood. I'm sure if it was at night it would have been totally different story.

Ahaha. That's hilarious. I had to go through tolls right after with no ezpass. Had to open the door. It threw them off.

Thats like asking why theres speed limits when people can "safely" drive 80+ and that its legal in other state....thats not the point, the point is you broke the law, now you get to deal with it. Its called responsibility for your own actions, learn it.

I got pulled over the other day on the NYS Thruway for my tint. I have 35% all the way around. He also called for backup. I think he was assuming some punk kid with multiple violations was driving the car. What he found was me (33 years old), my fiance, and my black lab dog (Boost) in the car. He asked how my license is and I told him it was clean. He came back within minutes acknowledging my clean license and said "I could cite you for the tint, but I won't. Have a safe drive home."

Was the tint the initial reason for him pulling you over?

My truck has 20%(I think, could be 35%. Was on it when I bought it) all around, except windshield, and I have never once been pulled over for it. This is DD'ing it for 4yrs or so including the Thruway every day. I think the type of vehicle makes a big difference in whether or not they hassle you for tint.

If you do have tint and are stopped....

1) Put the vehicle in park(set the ebrake)
2) Roll ALL of the windows down(regardless of the temperature/weather)
3) If its dark turn on your interior lights
4) Get the **** off your cell phone(tell whoever that you're going to be late after the stop)
5) You can think it but don't let it show

By doing this you are showing concern for the officers safety and it will greatly reduce your likelihood of getting a ticket. Understand that an officer approaching a blacked out vehicle will assume that the worst possible scenario awaits him inside, by showing him there is no threat you make the stop that much less dangerous for them.

If it's so dangerous for officers..."Why the **** do they go outta their way to pull you over for it?"

Because its illegal...its like asking why detectives go after murderers even though they know its dangerous.
I have 35% tints on my windows, haven't been pulled over.Partially because I know a few of the cops locally but if/when it does happen I'm not going to fight it. It's a minor offense and I know I was breaking the law

If cops avoided everything that was dangerous there wouldn't be much for them to do.

Police officers don't find it odd that ALL your windows are down at night or in he cold/rain? Seems like they would be suspicious of this and think you're attempting to air the vehicle out from weed or alcohol.

I ride with my windows somewhat down at all times. Not from fear of being caught for tints but because thats just how I like it. Especially on those warm summer nights I love having the windows down.

I mean trust me I understand It's illegal and if they want to write a ticket they will. But no matter how cold or the temperature I always roll down the windows so they can see before approaching. I also will turn the dome / map lights on at night and usually put the keys on top of the car showing I'm not a threat. More or less my point is I think it's weird how they're worried about not being able to see in yet the backs, where it is most crucial can be dark as you want.
