Any sense in picking up a 2001 land rover disco and modding it, or would it be asking for trouble?

Here is a tid bit from the top 10 overland vehicles according to ExpeditionPortal.com

http://www.expeditionportal.com/reso...-vehicles.html

Quote:
Honorable Mention:

2004 Land Rover Discovery II (2004 only) $10,000-18,000

Editor's Personal Discovery II, Sold 2004
The 2004 Land Rover Discovery is the pinnacle of refinement, performance and reliability for the NAS Discovery. Having owned a 2001 and now owning a 1995, I have a half-decade of driving time in these trucks and I absolutely love them, but am cautious about recommending them as an overland vehicle. The reason for this is simple: when they work, they are an absolute joy, but the problem is, they don’t work often enough. The only vehicles to fail on me in the field have been my Discovery(s). So, given that, the visibility is wonderful, the driving position superb, the trail performance in stock form near the top of its class. It has excellent payload and a thoughtful layout. It also has a 4.6L motor and a locking center differential. If you love them and still want to buy one, its ok - I understand.

Pros:
  1. Classic adventure style and feel
  2. Excellent payload
  3. Excellent visibility

Cons:
  1. Worst reliability in its class
  2. Poor fuel economy
  3. Worst reliability in its class

Summary: Easy to fall in love with, not so easy to live with.

Editor's Field Experience: I currently own a 1995 and have owned a 2001. Nearly a decade of ownership in total, and the 1995 is one of my most favorite vehicles of all time, but I know that I am irrational about my affinity. Sometimes what you drive is not what you should recommend others drive too. . .
And here are a few threads that talk about them:

http://www.expeditionportal.com/foru...er-Reliability.

http://www.expeditionportal.com/foru...-Guy-on-Discos.

Cliff notes: They can be extremely unreliable but are wonderful when they work.

Aside from that. If you are ever worried about rust on a jeep, bring along a ball-peen hammer. Lightly tap the rusty areas, if it makes a solid PINGGGG you are good to go. If you hear a crunch... run away.

Typical problem areas are by the shock towers in the rear... and bottom rear of the frame rails. Watch out for changing the shock bushings... those mounting bolts (especially in the rear) LOVE to snap off and are a gigantic PITA.

From the photos just looks like a little surface rust, you can go get some good brush on rust converter. Benjamin Moore sells a really nice one they just started carrying, we used some recently worked very well.

Then you can just do some overspray with a satin black rustoleum. Dont use matte spray on the spots, water seems to permeate it too easily and it wears out quick... gloss holds up better but well its glossy. Satin seems to be the perfect mix.

Good Luck... pretty Jeep... as for price I would ask for $1000 less than blue book for the necessary repairs.
Yeah, I'm still pretty annoyed over the whole thing. My Carmax offer deadline is at the end of the day tomorrow. He knows this and is supposed to let me know in the morning. If he says no, I'll be back to square one and would have to have Carmax re-appraise the car.

Thanks for the advice. I'm hoping he says yes and agrees to the cheaper price. If everything works out, I'm going to have to throw new brakes on as soon as I get the car as the front pads are so worn they may not make the trip home.

I'm from the Charleston area and all my old "wheeling" trails are now being overtaken by gas drilling.

They are great and sound so sick with a high flow muffler. My friend has an 01. But he is starting to have alot of problems "electrical" from it. Major thing is parts are expensive to replace, and a lot of places don't like to work on them.

Land Rovers are money pits, plain and simple. In my opinion, the only ones worth dealing are Defenders.

...because they're the coolest ****ing things on the planet.

Cant say that I do, I use to be fairly involved with the SWVRSCCA group but not so much anymore.

It sucks, if I go out to the old coal mines out Sanderson I usually run in to large truck hauling drilling equipment on a very narrow gravel road and the other spots are currently being timber'd.

Not that I do a whole lot of wheeling anymore.

yeah that is kind of how it is at the old spot I used to ride at. They have went and reclaimed all the trails and are now just wide flat dirt roads with logging trucks and equipment everywhere.

I just have to install new brakes before I drive it home. If I can't get the mechanic that inspected to do the job, I may just bring it to Pepboys as a temporary measure.

Then it's tires, shocks and a detail.
