Weird. Sure looks like yours lasted a lot longer than mine.

It's hard to really hear the true sound of it with the EWG but I'm liking it. I ran into someone last week running ELH with a quad tip (don't know the brand) and it sounded like complete garbage. Yours on the other hand sounds like a race car.

It did change the sound of the EWG. Sounds more high pitched now. The revving video I'm uploading now might be a better representation of the sound, but it's still not the same as while driving because there is no load. |

Unequal lengths headers are what causes the pulsed, "rumbly" tone. He's just saying that even with Equal length it doesn't sound quite like a Honda or other 4 cyl. I'd agree, but it's not really because of the "boxer tone", it probably has more to do with the fact that it has a turbo and a bunch of really long pipes before the turbo.

The boxer motor still has it's own unique sound compared to a inline-4. The factory UEL header just makes it that much more obvious. One thing I've noticed about EL headers is the faster the car is the better they seem to sound. EL headers on a 250whp car don't sound as cool as EL headers on a 450whp car
I actually really like the way they sound in your video. They always sound better under load than just revving it. |

It does have a certain fart-can quality to it.

Nope, definitely did not read the link at all. Should have known you had that covered. Just read it, nice write up as usual. I'm curious to see the results.

Very nice! I would still have to get an UEH... I couldn't loose that rumble. Sounds as if you're running a little richer now, btw.

Yeah...it sounds a lot different. You need to do one under load as well. Here is a GReddy comparison video since we are just posting random videos on your build thread these days.

Here's a video comparing the sound of the stock headers to that of the Invidia equal length headers:
The best comparison (IMO) is near the end when I'm bouncing on the LC rev limiter. |

I still some hear Subaru in there... I think our valve timing still adds it's own tone as much as anything else. Change that and you'd truly remove any of the "boxer" tone.
Also... with respect to the wrap- if you both started with the same roll and used the whole thing; yours is better insulated (if your wrap style is truly less surface area, depends on pipe separation). Means yours has more overlap + is a bit thicker as a result. Last edited by climbhigh09; 09-27-2012 at 07:43 AM. |
