Multi Function Display
For having nothing better to do went through my owner's manual. Section 3-28 caught my attention.
It appears other countries get the nifty "Multi Function Display" , here is video. It, obviously, displays many intriguing things. And, it allows to change some car settings. Looks remarkably like what sits in 2014 Forester XT something or other. Did anyone put one in? How much did it cost? Canadian XV gets it, part number is 85261FJ474, it costs 330 Following a couple of threads on XV forums, install might require additional buttons on the wheel and unknown harnesses Last edited by suiram; 03-20-2014 at 07:54 PM. |

I think the Canadian '12+ sport trim Imprezas also get it. I just have an Impreza with a lowly touring trim. No MFD for me.

Yeah the Canadian sport and limited trim levels have it. It's nice to have it but leather seats were why I got a limited rather than the MFD or other extras.

From the manual, it looks like a toy. I don't need my car remembering birthdays and anniversaries. People use their computers and cell phones for that sort of thing.
I like not having a graphical display in my car. I spend enough time looking at them the rest of the day. My biggest gripe about our MFD is the 0.3 MPG resolution. |

Agree - the birthday bit was complete kitsch. Perhaps something that does not transfer well from the Japanese culture?
The rest of it - tracking OC miles, changing some car settings, looks quite good |

There's a couple of useful sensor missing on the lower trim that you get with that toy. |

Its standard on the Hybrid also. The oil temp is nice but I fail to see why they do not include coolant temperature while they are at it.

My 2013 Canadian "sport" wagon has the MFD. The fuel economy and stability system displays are semi-useful. But it also has a bunch of "nanny" warnings that are borderline dangerous.
Eg, the first time the stability system activates during each drive (quite often in winter here), it BEEPs and flashes a warning. Just what I need, a blinky light distraction while managing a patch of ice underneath. Ugh. Wonder what brain thought *that* was a good idea. It also BEEPs and warns about "roads may be slippery" every morning when the temperature is between roughly 3C and 0C. Cute the first 50 times it happens, very annoying for the rest of the life of the vehicle. |

I think the new WRX gets one of these, or something similar. Would be neat to have, but who knows about the harnesses.

If you're interested in changing settings, I think the dealer can do this for you.

I was also curious about that since mine is the Touring edition. I wonder what more is needed to install that (programming or extra parts/wiring) ?

I have the MFD on mine. The screen I keep mine on all the time is the triple con (which can be customized to show 3 different things). I use it to show the current driving (from ignition) distance, elapsed time, and fuel economy. At the top of every screen, it also shows the time and estimate distance remaining before refuel or average fuel economy.
The rest of the screens / other than the analog clock are kind of gimmicky, but fun to play with occasionally. Last edited by webster354; 04-03-2014 at 04:33 PM. |

I just did some back-of-a-napkin math, so I might be wrong.
I would assume the electronics do their basic measurements in millilitres and meters and then there's a final conversion to miles and gallons for those markets. A difference in 0.1 l/100km looks to be about 0.3 mpg. |

Regardless, I'm sure the car's computer is measuring consumption continuously, so it should be able to calculate to 0.1 MPG resolution. My VW did. |

Since Subaru has seemed to stay ahead of the curve in regard to safety features, I would be guessing that display will start showing up on the new cars very soon. I heard on the news that back up cameras will be mandated on all vehicles over the next few years. Given the base rate HU cannot do that, my guess would be that display will double as the camera screen, unless they were to upgrade the base HU. Yes, I know that does not mean it would be all inclusive, but just maybe.
For those of us without, well................... John |

Or integrated into the rear-view mirror like some. I don't know which will be cheaper, but I'm sure manufacturers will pick the cheaper option for low end models.

Well, the MFD is actually kinda prewired and already programmed to take a backup camera feed and even switch the MFD when the car is in R.
A good thread to read: http://www.subaruxvforum.com/forum/l...n-display.html |

Yeah the CDN limited uses the MFD for the back up camera.
I took some pictures of the controls for the MFD for you guys as well. |

The 2012 Canadian Limited came with a Pioneer HU and if you got a back up camera it goes there instead. It's a bigger screen but it isn't shaded as well as the MFD so it can wash out in direct sunlight.

Were you able to completely disable the beeps that way?
I changed that setting back in November, but it still goes BEEP very hour or two on long drives. EDIT: found another beep setting in the Radio menus.. turned it off there too, and didn't notice the usual hourly beeps on our long drives this past weekend. Possibly "fixed" now.
