Rear Diffuser for Wagon
so i searched and found that a lot of ppl went with the Cusco kit with the bar and mounted the stock STI diffuser onto it for wagons...
i kinda like the look of the APR diffuser for the WRX sedans...does anyoneknow if it will fit or not? or is there major modification to make it fit?

Thank you.
I know that people have fit the APR onto wagons - there is a guy in Utah who used to race a red wagon with an APR, but it was an 04. I am not sure if it will fit the 03 the same. I believe you can GET it to fit, but it was not designed to. You could always try doing a DIY diffuser, like Sausage did on his 07 wagon, and that way you could have a diffuser that looks like the APR, fits your car perfectly, and cost you roughly 1/4 of the price. But, it's all up to you. |

What year is what you searched for intended for? Why not cut 1/2 inch off each side if you've seen thats whats been done to make it work previously?
On a side note there are tons of people that make their own rear diffusers, search the DIY diffuser threads. EDIT, beat me to it Kentrik |

yea i dont think i'm capable or have the patience to build my own. the APR where the guy cut 1/2 inch off was on a 04 wagon...i believe the 02-03 wagon had a different rear bumper so im not sure is it the same for the same year. the APR carbon fiber one is the one i really wanted but i'll research more into it.

Good question....
The question I have here, is how different the wagon rear bumper and the sedan bumper? |

^^^ that is exactly what i want to look like for my rear...but i dont know who owns it. i've been searching on the diffuser picture thread and can't find anyhthing.
as far as the differences.. i do not know how much of a difference it is. but from what i have found out from my research...there is modification to make to get it to fit...it's just a matter of how much modification. if its a lot then its not worth it but if just drilling new holes, and cutting it shorted i can do. |

yeap...i got the three piece OEM kit to fit. SubaruGeniuneParts has it painted in Aspen White...so you might have to get it painted at a body shop. Either way, a professional body shop will be able to get it to fit nicer then lyourself.
I went a long route before i got it finished...I was hoping to save some money so I bought replica rear aprons, and a replica center piece off ebay. So I took it to the shop and have them put it on. The aprons were put on fine...they rivet it on and fill it over and painted over it. However the replica center piece was made of fiberglass so it was hard to mold it and it came warped. AFter forcing it on, it didn't look right. So i had to shell out and by the OEM piece from subarugeniuneparts. Im trying to sell the aprons seprately now. but the OEM center piece is made of plastic or polyutherane so its more flexible. I shave the ends down so it will sit more flush with the aprons. Its not perfect but no one wil notice unless your looking from 10 inches close. All in all, buy the OEM three piece and do it all together. If I had the center piece done with the aprons at the body shop, it would have came out even better. But i'm not complaining since it came out nice. |

Thanks for the info supratkfy! I was about to go this route, but I found an EDM/JDM wagon rear lip AND matching front lip (both brand new in box) for a great deal and couldn't pass it up. Unfortunately they are painted PSM, so I will have to take them to a shop to get them sprayed WRB. But excited about putting them on!

And that blue wagon above looks good. I see they did the sedan fenders and bumper but the back doesn't look like a sedan bumper? is it Just the diffuser and spats on his wagon bumper? Or maybe a jdm rear bumper? |

Cusco brace is a lot just to mount the diffuser. I got all the parts from subaru for 80ish.
I had the tire pan brackets welded on for $15 at Midas. I did all the leg work the day before and traced where they needed to go, stripped down the undercoating, retraced. But here are the part numbers! Sorta helped that I have a friend with an 06 STi that i could use as a template to get the bumper bracket lined up where it needed to be. 91225FE000- Diffuser 91285FE000- Bumper bracket 52153FE120- Tire pan bracket (Need two) There are a total of 3 tire pan brackets are the STi's have but you really only need two and the third is impossible to put where it needs to be. to do the two, just bolt the brackets to the diffuser and hold the diffuser up to the bottom of the tire pan (i used a car jack so i could trace). |

I opted not to weld at all nor bolt through my spare tire well. I instead used a urethane adhesive/sealer and bonded the brackets directly to the underbody of the car. I did not strip the factory undercoating either. I figured, if it's strong enough to bond to the car, it will hold more urethane and a >5lb piece of plastic.
I cleaned the area where the brackets are supposed to go, marked it and applied the adhesive which came in a caulking tube. I taped the brackets into place overnight to allow the sealant to cure and everything is now secure. My prep work for the brackets was self-etching primer and a coat of paint while leaving the section to be glued bare steel (indicated in the instructions). Obviously I didn't do that for the body (factory finish is infinitely better than anything out of a can) but it's holding very well. The rough surface added more area for a bond as well. Added bonus is that the urethane will expand and contract with the weather and is rated for outdoor use. It is an autobody item afterall. |
