Year: 2011
Make: SUBARU
Model: 4 door WRX
Location: NY metro area (Westchester/Putnam); commute is about 25 miles each way and a mix of side-roads that don't get a lot of initial attention, rural roads that are marginally better, and a 10 mile ride on a usually acceptable 3 lane interstate (684)

Looking for a tire/wheel combo. Had mostly settled on Michelin X-Ice Xi2 in 215/55R16 on Sport Edition F7s (figuring the extra $20 or so per wheel over steelies would be worthwhile over the life of the car).

Have a minor dilemma in that there's currently a $70 rebate on the tires but only if they ship by 10/22. The two locations closest to me won't ship until 11/16 and the difference in shipping from the in-stock location is about $40. Not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things but got me wondering if another tire or size (saw some people saying 205/60 which I like the idea of as it's a little narrower, just not sure if the change in ratio is too much??) would be a better/cheaper option without being junk.

The other tire I initially considered was the Blizzak WS70 which works out to almost exactly the same price as the Michelin (if I go more $$ shipping option and get the rebate) so between those two, I think I'd stick with the Michelin unless otherwise dissuaded!

Different opinions or just go for the Michelin in 215/55?

Thanks!

what would be the absolutely cheapest 16in rims i could buy for my 2011 wrx? i have been searching and i know the tire i want thanks to tire rack. but i know there has to be steelies from another car that fit mine. i have a buddy that works in a junk yard who can help me out with some steel rims.

i had him look for older impreza or wrx alloy rims and he came up with nothing. so is there a list of rims that will fit our cars anywhere? like from other makes and models?

if you want alloys, old 2002 WRX / Legacy / Forester 16" x 6.5 wheels work great.

If not then find a 16" steelie with the proper offset.

if you plan on buying new tires, just get the tirerack steel wheels. they mount and balance them for free, i dont know how much mounting and balancing is in your area, but its $80-$100 for 4 by me.

Awesome, thanks n2oiroc. So just to confirm, these will still fit on the Steel wheels as long as I'm pairing up the same rim size of 16"?

do you get a lot of ice? if its mostly just deep snow, the generals are great in snow but give up some ice grip compared to some of the others.

Try looking in your classifieds or Craigslist for wheels and/or tires that'll do for the winter is probably the cheapest way to get trough the winter safely!

A buddy of mine made it through with Bridgestone Potenza re070 just fine lol. He learned to drift at EVERY corner and go really slow. But I'd never recommend keeping summers on in the snow!

have been doing that but then i heard there was a problem with the lugs nut matching up and problems finding the correct lugs with the right thread pitch.

i found some vw rims for cheap but was told they would not work.

Maine is different from Delaware which is different from Florida.
Delaware, how often does it go below freezing? How much snow?

I just moved here...but when i was up in NJ it varied. Some times it was raining on xmas, other times it could snow 4 feet. In Delaware im guessing maybe late december to mid february the overnight lows are below freezing, during the day i have no idea. I'm not so worried about performance as I have a short commute and dont have many responsibilities outside of my job, but I am worried about the actual tire falling apart, rubber breaking down etc because these are basically brand new (2500 miles)

i know here in MD it can get pretty nasty at times. most people stay home when there is 3ft of snow, but i get to work when everything else is shut down. the weather is always changing here too.

i think snow tires would be a great thing to have when they are needed. plus you get to keep your good rims from getting damaged. i know around here they love to use alot of salt that just happens to love any rim i have ever owned

Aren't the Dunlop's considered 3-season tires?

I dont think the SP Sport 01's are...the problem i have run into is local suby people telling me drive safe and you will be more than alright versus going online and reading about people that talk about their white knuckle adventures using the SP 01's as ice skates then going home and ordering blizzaks.

Sp01's are not alright. They are summer tires, not all seasons.

i seriously doubt the stock tires are safe when the bad weather hits. of course it also has to do with the driver, but tires have alot to do with it when adverse weather is in the mix and the stock tires are by no means safe when it comes to really nasty weather during the winter.

this shouldn't even be a conversation if you ask me. If i am not mistaken, when the temperature gets down into the lower 40's you will start to loose grip... even with no snow

Now if you are deciding between all season tires and snow tires then that is another conversation.

a lesson in cut and paste...

Dunlop's SP Sport 01 and SP Sport 01A tires are Ultra High Performance Summer tires for sports cars, coupes and sedans. Dunlop's SP Sport 01 tires were designed to be multi-talented tires and were initially developed for Original Equipment use by leading automotive manufacturers to complement the latest in vehicle design and construction. SP Sport 01 and SP Sport 01A tires are are not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

Just use the lugs that came with you car....

Any subaru 5x100 wheel should bolt up just fine.
