Default New '03 Legacy L owner...

Hey everyone. I'm a proud new owner of an '03 Legacy L and love it! I've always had trucks, but have been thinking of a Scooby for a while. I finally took the blunge and got one I could afford. Anyway, I'm already throwing around the idea of tuning it up, but don't know where to start. It doesn't have a ton of power like a WRX (which I test drove also, but couldn't afford), but would like it to. I know a turbo would probably be the way to go, but which one? Where would I get it from? I'm sortof mechanically inclined, so would I be able to install one myself? Any other ideas of what mods to do? I've already put a new stereo in it (a pain in the @ss to put in, by the way). One more question please: I just noticed that there is a piece missing from the front bumper next to the right fog light. Any idea where I can get a replacement, other than the dealer? I would post a picture, but I'm unsure of how to do it. Thanks

I'm in the same boat; had a built Jeep for 6+ years and just got my scooby a couple weekends ago. Use the search here, there's a plethora of information available. Every time I come up with a new question I search it out before I absolutely have to look like a newb by asking

you would probably want to do an engine swap with either a wrx or an sti if you wanted turbo. our engines wouldnt last long since it wasnt built for the boost.

welcome to NASIOC.

Turbo's are an option but cost lots of money. Others will say to just do a WRX engine swap, but again this costs lots of money. If you couldn't afford an 03 WRX you probably can't afford to do a swap or turbo upgrade. See this post: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=717853

You will have other problems too, like needing bigger better brakes and because of this new rims and tires, not having a Limited Slip rear Differential although it doesn't prevent turboing...

If you asked before you bought I would have suggested looking at an Outback 2002+ H6. Sedan or wagon. The H6 gives significantly more power than the H4 off the line, about 2 seconds with the 4EAT, but is still about 2 seconds slower than a 4EAT WRX 0-60MPH. But then again it too costs more.

The H6 eninge is another upgrade option for the Legacy but also expensive.

You might like to look at a High Stall Torque Converter though. It will help the acceleration of your Legacy and only costs about $500 US.

PS Sedan or Wagon?

If you thought the radio was tough to put in, you don't need to do a turbo install. all the stereo components on the legacy aren't too hard to do. some cars (nissan 300z for example) are much harder to replace the stereo...

there are tons of posts and will be many more discussing all the things you can do to boost the power a bit. try looking up posts about headers, power pulleys, better air intakes and stuff like that. however, it will take a wrx engine swap to really get a lot more power...

that little piece that popped out of your front bumper - i lost it too for about 20 minutes. i ran up on a curb pretty bad and noticed the piece missing later when i parked. I went back to the spot where i had my run in with the evil curb and saw the piece sitting there. try a junkyard or the dealer, or with a part number you can go to websites like subaruparts.com or other similar discount companies...

welcome and enjoy the dancing banana!

everything for 4200 shipped, including exhaust

Thanks for the welcome everyone. Yeah, maybe a turbo is out of the question. I'm not really looking for anything with a ton of power, just something to give it a little more umph. Thanks for the link to the subaru parts place janikphoto, I'll check that out right now. And thanks for ideas on what to do. I look forward to reading all I can about the Scooby's and what I can blow all my money on! Oh, before I forget, I want to post pics of my car and stuff, what is a good hosting site for this?

PS: Diabolical1 CC, it's a sedan.

Legacy Welcome!

I also have an 03' Legacy in Wagon Flavor. If you figure out how to disable the day time running lights, let me know. I've tried.

Look into a CIA (Cold air intake) they can help out too, as well, there are always exhaust system modifications.

From what I've gathered, (I'm fairly new here too) Modding the EJ25 (our engine) is 'big bucks' for any real apprieciable gains.

Try the NA forums too.

And check this link as well.

Thanks for that link Drakuun. I think I might try that, and get a good exhaust. And that torque converter would liven things up a good bit I think. I'll do the exhaust first though. Thanks for the help so far guys. Great stuff.

Default Jumped on the bandwagon too!

hi all! I just got myself a 2003 Legacy L Special Edition Wagon. After looking for a car for about 2 years - was looking for a WRX, but space reasons dictated the Legacy. Great car, only had it for 5 days, and looking forward to a lot of time with it. My old car is an '89 Civic I've had for almost 12 years, 225K miles!

Cereal_Killer, I'm thinking about putting in a new head unit too. Can you elaborate on the pain in the @ss a bit more?

That's what made it a pain in the @ss. Took me about 45 minutes to figure it out! They are loacted where the ashtray is. Kind of up and underneath it. It's the bracket that holds the ashtray. The other thing that got me was the shifter knob (AT). Didn't think it would be a problem, until I got the point of pulling out the assembley. Had to re-connect the battery, shift it all the way down to 1st, and then re-disconnect the battery. I know better now, though. I recently took it all out again to run the wires for my sub and amp. Not too bad, now that I know how to do it.

you can buy a really stubby little screw driver and it will make it much easier. I found the legacy to be one of the easiest stereo installs in a LONNG time, and I've done quite a few cars over the years...
