Default New Subaru Legacy Owner!!!

Just bought a Silver 2003 Legacy L SE. I really am starting to like this car. My wife and I went to the dealer to buy an Impreza RS, but she saw the Legacy and we both did a double take at the price... (less than the smaller Impreza). She talked me into it and I really like it, and the engine, BUT this engine is a bit underpowered for a car of the Legacy's size and weight. Instead of 165 HP, it needs about 200 HP IMO. So, as a newbie, my question is... what can I do to this car to squeeze out a few more horses/torque (even just 5 or 10 HP more). We're talking SIMPLE solutions here, no turbos that would freak out the wife, and nothing that will affect the warranty. I would love to hear what some of you have done. Do things like replacing the air filter/plugs/wires with High performance ones really help? Thanks everyone!!!

Bottom line, not much. But there are things like cold air intakes, exhaust, etc., but that'll only buy you a few horsepower. Do a search or go poking around in modifications forums, etc.

Congratulations and welcome to the Legacy family. And solidify your love for Subarus, pay the L SE down as far as you can as quickly as you can, so that you can be ready for the next generation Legacy that has already been released in Japan. The guess is that the US version will get 250-280 hp in the detuned STi engine configuration.

What would your wife say about 'upgraded camshafts' ????

really to keep it simple intake & exhaust is about all you can do. 5-10hp gain is possible from them.

Default "Official" news on the new Legs

Everyone who is interested in the new Legs (who isn't) pick up the Septemeber 2003 Car & Driver. They have the engines, output, prices and options.

Hey, its a little more solid than hints rumors and allegations.

Base pricing: $25k

Engines:SOHC H4 16 valve, 2.5 165 hp

turbo and intercooled DOHC H4 16 vavle 2.5 250hp

DOHC H6 24 vavle 3.0 250hp.

This is out of the C&D pages. They say with any luck, the turboed versions will run about 27-29k and the wagon for 3k more.

So there you go.

There's not much that will gain tons of power without major work, but...

Change out the intake, exhaust manifold, catback exhaust system. They will run a little $$$, but will be easy to install and shouldn't cause warranty issues. The other thing is to lighten the car as much as possible. You have roadside assistance? Well, levae the spare tire at home. You can change out the engine pulleys, flywheel and other engine componants for lighter ones and the car will feel faster, but they may cause warranty issues... Also, lighter wheels and tires. Plus new wheels may look nicer. Some stock wheels weigh a lot more than certain aftermarket ones, and less weight equals quicker accel...

Oh, and if all else fails, add some stickers and a wing to your car, because plenty of honda owners have proven that a few stickers and a wing will add about 150 hp!!!

I must get this new car and driver. Does it seem odd to anyone else for subaru to come out with a legacy H4 2.5 turbo thats 250ish HP AND a H6 thats 250ish hp? I find that pretty weird. Although maybe one will be for outbacks and towing applications while the other will be more performance...I don't know. And what ever happened to the twin turbo H6 380ish hp that Car and Driver said was going to come out?
thanks
Micum

doesn't seem too weird, because one will drive differently than the other. They are for two different types of consumers who both want the power but for different reasons. The h6 is mainly to compete with other 6 cyl high end lux models like audi, vovlo, acura, etc... The turbo is to offer wrx-type buyers a step up... Just because they have similar horse power doesn't mean that the two cars will compete for sales and make the offering redundant...

Plus, the h6 will probably have a lower rating when the real prod model hits the streets. C&D and other mags are always a little optimistic about power. My old gmc sonoma 6 cyl was listed as 5 or 10 over what the factory finally released...
