Default Drum brake "puller thingie"

Hello,
Just wondering if anyone has any information on where I can get the drum brake puller. Or what size the two holes in the drum brakes are so I can make my own.
Cheers
Gareth

PS if anyone has any good advice on how to get the rear drum brake's off it would be apreciated.

I usually spray WD-40 on wheelstuds area, and gently tap the drums with a hammer (don't warp the drums). It eventually breaks loose for me.

I've been trying that all day. All I have is a nice pile of rust under the drum. The thing will not come off.

Haven't worked on a 97 'L before, but on pretty much every drum brake I have done, you have to retract the pads back using the adjuster or it's not going to come off (force it and you could damage things)

the bolts are usually 8mm

Here are one instructions (pretty poor though) to remove the drums:http://www.cybrrpartspro.com/Chilton...97CH09_19.HTML .

The bolts are usually 8 by a 1.25 thread pitch. Just make sure you run them in evenly.

I finaly got it off, replaced the pads...went to the other side expecting it to be just as hard. It wasn't they came off with very little effort.

quietgiroth - how'd you manage to change the pad that was attached to the e-brake cable (at least I think it's the e-brake cable). I managed to disconnect all the springs and crap, but I couldn't figure out how to get the attached pad off. It's attached to a metal flange with a rivet with a horseshoe shaped washer bent around it.

That was the only thing preventing me from replacing the pads. Any advice?

Okay... from what I can gather you are talking about the e-brake lever that is attached to one of the brake shoes. I used screwdrivers to open up the C-clip that holds the pin in. I started with a small flat blade, pounded it into the gap, and did it with bigger and bigger screwdrivers to the point where I pulled it off with pliers. The pin iteself is press fit into the shoe... you have to remove it so you can put it on the new shoes. I set a socket underneath the shoe and pounded the pin out with the hammer. I basically did the same on the new shoe to pound it back in.

So was that your question?

Ok yeah that's exactly what I need to know. Pry the C-clip off and then pound the pin out with a hammer...got it. I'll have to try that next time I have some time off.
Thanks.

Yeah I figured it was what you meant. That's probably the hardest part of the whole job... not too bad after you do the first side, though.

Good luck

I should have taken pictures while I was doing it and done a write up. I still might, but its such a pain.

The part your talking, about I hammered out with...well...a hammer and a screw driver. Then reused it, I don't know if that was the best thing to do. At the time I didn't have much of an option. I just make sure that I didn't damage it too much.

Once again cheers everyone for their help.

Yeah, you should be able to get a hardware kit for relatively low $$$ that would include the clip and springs and retainers. The parts store I got my stuff from said it wasn't available, though. I'm sure a dealership would have it, but then it would probably be a sizeable investment.

Anyway... I ended up reusing mine too.

I started to mangle the C-clip when I was trying to pry it off. I'd rather use a new one, but I don't want to order a "kit" through the dealer. Think a hardware store would have what I'm looking for?
