Default Which to buy, Forester, Legacy, or Impreza Wagon? Utility comparison pics inside.

For those contemplating on purchasing a new Subaru with utility in mind, there is an article in the latest Tatsumi Mook (Mook --> hybrid between Magazine & Book) Street Perfect Tuning for the Forester comparing the SG Forester, BL Legacy Outback Wagon, and GG Impreza Wagon. The next 7 posts are scans I took from the magazine that I thought may be worth sharing.

As a reference, the cover & ISBN# is shown below. Original Price is 2000 Yen, with 176 pages. It also has some articles on the various SG & SF STi Foresters.

Default Article cover

Below is a partial cover of the comparison article.

As a note, the article compares the JDM versions of the SG, GG, and BL, so it compares many aspects (e.g. features & accessories) that are probably irrelevant for north america.

Default Cargo floor space

The 3 images below show a comparative trunk floor space between the Forester, Impreza Wagon, and Legacy Outback Wagon, respectively. Note the 3 identical cargo: cooler box, cardboard box, and a liquid container nestled on the side.

As a comparison aid, I added yellow, red, and blue lines. The yellow line represents the center line along the longitudinal axis of the vehicles. It shows how close the cooler box is to the rear edge of the cargo space, and how wide the cargo area is.

The red line represents a vertical line starting from the edge of the roof down. What this shows for example, is that in the Forester, the rear liftgate has the most vertical slope, and allows items to be stacked relatively high in the rear edge of the cargo space.

The blue line shows the orientation of the container. In the Forester, there is enough space for the container to be oriented laterally, while in the others, there is only space between the cardboard box and the sides if the container is oriented longitudinally.

Default Cargo access

The 3 images below show the relative ease/difficulty in accessing cargo. Except for the Impreza Wagon, cargo can be slid in & out without having to lift it up. Useful for big & heavy objects imho. The Impreza Wagon has a relatively lower cargo floor height than the other 2.

Default Liftgate clearance & ground clearance

The image below shows liftgate and ground clearance. Scanned from 3 separate images, they are size-matched using the pole behind the vehicles as a reference. The yellow line shows the alignment of the 3 separate images. The vertical red lines indicate head clearance when a person stands behind the vehicles right up to the rear bumper cover. Although the bottom of the liftgates lift up about equally tall, the Legacy provided the most head clearance, while the Forester provided the least.

The light blue horizontal line compares the ground clearance of the three.

Default Second row passenger space

The 3 images below show the second row passenger space. While the Forester seem to have a slightly better headroom over the Impreza Wagon, the legroom is hardly distinguishable. Nor surprising given the shared platform.

The Legacy however, has a much better legroom for the 2nd row passengers. I'm not sure if this is the case in the earlier Legacy models as well.

Default Ease of first row entry & egress

The images below illustrate the relative ease of entry & egress for the first row occupants. The Forester's taller roof is obvious here.

Default Ease of second row entry & egress

And finally, the last 3 images below compare the same for the 2nd row occupants. Again, the Forester allows for easiest entry & egress (it was supposedly one of the design considerations for the SG line), with a reasonable ground clearance, seat height, and headroom to maneuver in & out through the doors.

Surprisingly, the 2nd row seat was such that the person in the picture cannot touch the ground without sliding out of the seat.

Is that silver wagon an Outback? It seems to have the almost as much clearance as the Forester; that would explain why the guy can't reach the ground (other than his shrimpiness)

Yeah it's an Outback. Just look at the side claddings and the front grill in that first picture. It's a double edge razor rather than the single edge found on the normal Legacys.

I don't see it mentioned anywhere in the article.
Either way, I recall seeing a blurb in SOJ's site regarding the SG Forester's ground clearance & seat height designed such that entry & egress is how it is depicted by this fellow in the pictures. So he must be the nominal size for that design. That doesn't mean it's the nominal size for people from countries outside Japan.

Thanks for asking. I should have pointed that out. It is the Outback variety. I'll edit my posts to clarify.

Thanks for the feedbacks. Fwiw, I thought that the Legacy Outback's suspension exhibited less body roll compared to my my2003 Forester, although they're supposed to have the same ground clearance. The BP/BL Legacies are really nice imho. But the Forester wins in certain aspects of cargo carrying capacity.

Unfortunately, no. Besides, the current generation Impreza, Legacy & Foresters have changed enough that the comparison is most likely no longer valid. You might be able to find the book used somewhere.
