Peaty, you did a nice job even if it's not your kind of skinned-knuckle project. I did my headlights and fogs with the thick 3M stuff a couple of years ago. It's worked well and allowed me to take those plastic grilles off my fogs, which makes them easier to clean. I wish I'd had my whole front end done as well since the hood of my car looks sandblasted . Lesson learned for the next time.

So, my question is what happens several years from now. Does the stuff fade or keep the paint from fading (or fading at a different rate) like decals often do?

Peaty,
Great job on the installation and documentation! Thanks always for sharing so much info. That's something I'd like to look into doing when I replace my current Forester. The hood edge is pitted from rocks from it's 5 years of service with me. Would you post an update pic, say one month from now to show how the film looks after the bubbles dry out? Ken |

I'll update the page, I was just looking at it a min ago and most all are gone now. We had a few warm sunny days here and that seemed to do the trick.

I installed the 3M on my GD impreza and my SG forester. The 3M has been there for at least 2 years on the GD, and about 1 year on the SG. The bubbles that had no air trapped in it (i.e. just the alcohol/water solution) and is not too big either dissapears or stays the same size. Bubbles of air stay the same size; I haven't seen any of the small air bubbles expand, unlike a bad tint job where small bubbles can grow in time. Then again, I've only had the 3M for about 2 years, not 5 years or more. There's also the cloud/haze look when some alcohol/water solution is trapped; but mostly visible on the headlight/fog lens 3M sheet. Those dissapear very quickly, and never come back. my 2 cents |

You installed a small one. I did this one:
http://www.invinca-shield.com/asp/genkit.asp?kit=4226 The deluxe kit including the mirrors and a pillars. It was okay except the corner pieces around the fogs. One went on awful the other was fine after I presectioned it. Curves and creases are a bitch. Scott |

I only wanted the small kit myself. I wasn't sure how well I could do on the install. I didn't want to spend a ton of money and end up having it turn out really bad. According to the link you posted the A pillars are an additional $74 on top of the $354. The RockBlocker kit that covers the same area minus the A-pillars is $182 and covers the hood scoop on the XT. The A-pillars are an additional $35. Not to mention all the relief cuts that are in that kit.

From what I saw the Stongard was $404
http://www.stongard.com/images/patterns/070021.gif http://www.autocater.com/sell/catalo...cA&branch=2320 I decided on the other because it it has more but smaller pieces and infact the slits are about the only way to wrap around the corners. It also does cover around the sides of the air dam and more coverage around the lights. I paid a bit over $400 shipped. It installed in 2 hours x 2 days X 2 people. To get the bottom corners right I wound up sectioning them. Scott |

The only difference between the Forester and the Forester XT is the hood scoop Subaru took from the WRX. Other than they are the same so the price drops if you so chose so. I ma glad to hear that you got some protection for all those rocks and other flying debris on the road and that you were able to do it yourself. It appears to me that the Invinca-shield kit is much easier to install from all the relief cuts. Sometimes though that can make things trickier for a beginner. Update
Both the lamp and paint protection have been on for a little while now. I've been through quite a few storms and been pelted with cinders and lots of other stuff. So far it's been holding up nicely. It was so filthy I had to give it a bath today.
