Default 2011 STI -- TIMING BELT JUMPED after less than 24hrs of ownership

So less than 24hrs after I took ownership of my new (used) 2011 Subaru WRX STI it died on me getting coffee this morning. I was taking a drive with two of my coworkers and doing a bit of "spirited driving" but then I slowed down when I got closer to the Brueggers I was going to and the Engine lost all power and the car slowly came to a halt. There was a slight squealing sound that came from the back and then I smelled some kind of burnt odor coming from the air vents. When I tried to start the car again it turned over but wouldn't start, continually trying to do this lead to some popping noises from backfiring and eventually my battery died.

FUN. FUN.

A quick "google" of the problem and reading a few postings on Nasioc lead me to a few things to check/do inspect fuses, disconnect the MAF, and disconnecting and reconnecting the battery.

NO LUCK.

The car is currently sitting in queue at the service center of my local dealership to be looked at tomorrow morning. I spoke with the previous owner via facebook who told me the only modification he ever made was a cat back exhaust. So I expect no problems with the dealer fixing the problem as it only has 25,000 miles and is a 2011...but the more I read around here...the more it seems like dealers love to deny warranty claims.

I know this type of thread is cliche and often posting one implies that the OP didn't read previous 900 similar postings that preceded theirs but I rest assured that is not the case. I'm almost certain this is either a FPR, O-Ring, or another Fuel Pump related issue but I decided to post videos and pictures and get a little more perspective from the forum.

Will post an update when I hear back from the dealership, so others can better diagnose their problems when they have them.

********* -- RESOLVED -- **********

You cant be denied a warranty claim if you bought it with a warranty and you yourself did nothing to modify it, especially after 24 hours. It is the responsibility of the dealer to inspect the car for those issues before the resale.

Yea - the dealer is a Chevy place(3hrs from me) in NH which, as a state has the weakest buyer protection laws on used cars. Spoke with the place I bought it at today who said if Subby doesn't cover it they'll only pay for half of the repairs.

Great.

Can't see why SOA or the dealer would deny the claim ...

Yes Subaru can deny a claim do to fact if its not "certified" used car from Subaru.

So to the op the Chevy dealer u bought it from what did they state what kind of warranty and I mean in "writing". With only just getting the car and something like this happening I wouldn't except anything but full coverage regardless. I'm not sure with used cars from a dealer but I know with new cars for sure u have so many days to return it, no questions asked. Have a look at your bill of sale and see what it says. Good luck hope this helps

It has a factory warranty until 36k regardless of where it was bought from as long as it stays in the states. I think?

Talk to a lawer, I know in some states you have 72hrs to back out of deal from a dealer, but it could be buy beware...atleast call a lawer and if you can get the wheels turning

I'm sorry you caught a raw deal, if nothing else try to reach a half and half deal with both the dealer you bought it at and soa, it really all depends on if they can prove any of the mods on the car are the cause of the malfunction. There is legal presidence for that, I know it for a fact.

Your exactly right in some cases never said it didn't have warranty but in some states to validate manufacturers warranty mainly with the power train needs to be certified by a dealer on used cars.
Its a grey area cuz of buyer beware on used cars mainly
That's when a dealer says it comes still with full manufacturers warranty they better put in writing. Salesman will say anything to make a sale but means nothing if they don't put in writing.

If it is any sort of legit dealer they will fix the problem if you tell them to. You could also call a local news channel if they don't. Then they'll step up and fix it.

Yea - as I said if the dealer doesn't want to fix it I'm really SOL when it comes to returning the car...I wish I had taken notice of the local laws before I bought the vehicle. It's going to be really hard to hold them liable.

Quote:
New Hampshire has neither a "cooling off period" to cancel a used car sale, nor a used car "lemon law." Although some states have such laws, New Hampshire's "lemon law" applies only to new cars (refer to the section on Autos: Lemon Law, and a "cooling off" period is nonexistent in either new or used car sales. New Hampshire does offer protection for the used car buyer by regulating the sale of "unsafe" used cars (i.e., cars that cannot pass state inspection), in addition to warranty protection under the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC).
http://doj.nh.gov/consumer/sourcebook/autos-used.htm

As I said, I did find the previous owner on facebook who, was really cool about it and has no liability and therefore no reason to lie to me and said the only mod ever done was the cat back exhaust and no tune. So taking that as a truth, I can't see why the dealer wouldn't fix it when Subaru states their warranties are fully transferable for the life of the warranty.

+1
to the poster who said 50% MacMulkin Chevy and 50% SOA, I might be able to work something out like that if poop hits the fan.

Also, +1 to calling the news channel...believe you me, if it turns out I spent 31K on a rolling lemon, that I'm liable to pay to fix (even a portion) I will be making some noise and some other lives miserable outside of my own.

-------- OK --------

So aside from business law and legal recourse, doesn't anyone have a better guess as to why it's not starting?

As I said I disconnected the MAF, fuses look good and I disconnected and reconnected the battery.

Anyone agree with with me about it being fuel pump related?

Waiting for the "your timing belt jumped/broke" guy to show up.

When the suby first quit u said it had a smell coming from the vents what did it smell like burnt wires, burnt rubber, etc...
U should have the Subaru dealer run the vin# to see what warranty work has bin done and such.

sounds like a fuel or ignition issue. compression sounds great as it doesn't skip while cranking. I'm going to go more with fuel. Maybe a dead pump or a blown fuse.

Call SOA with your VIN # and register yourself as the new owner of the vehicle. I bought an 08 WRX in PA (random dealer not subaru dealer) and brought it back to MD. After doing this I was able to get warranty work done at my local subaru dealer with no (read minimal) hassles. Good Luck man.

We shouldn't be guessing, if all it has is exaust, Subaru will more likely then not fix it for you. Very little is not covered under your 36k warrenty. I think you might be stirring up the worry pot a lil much. It really could be anything, fuel pump, injectors, egr related even bad gas

If you smelt something threw the vents, ima go out on a limb here and say its an electricial issue of some sorts. Something fried in there. Is your definition of spirted driving a death sentance to a clutch? Cause other then clutch coming threw the vent you shouldn't be getting smoke/smell in the cabin from an external part failing unless it overloaded a fuse of sort or even an ecm/tcm something in that area...hope my guess's help! Lol

COOL! I just did that online. I don't see any of the service records in there though. It did have the previous dealer "Subaru of Milford" and some service reminders.

HMM...

I really hope so. I'm just surprised I bring a DOA car into the service center and it's waiting in the parking lot over night and into the next day. That's like going to into the ER because you are having trouble breathing/are dying and the doctors taking little kids with nose bleeds and bee stings ahead of you.

That's what I am thinking...cool, thanks for the positive input. I'm still suprised someone hasn't suggested the timing belt jumped off there's always one of those guys in a thread like this...LOL

Yea -it was like burnt wires or plastic. It definitely wasn't gas or clutch...or the usual type smells like that.

Haha I get your concept, and as much as I love my rides like I love my wife there not human and unfortuantly service departments don't operate like ER's its pretty much first come first serve.

But yea I edit'd my post above and threw some guess's in just for the hell of it

OK - so stopped by the dealership on the way home today.

JOKE IS ON ME.

I was told by a technician that the timing belt had indeed jumped off the left bank. LOL, so I'm the one thread out of 900 ("my car died and won't starts" type) that this freak occurrence was actually the cause. He said belt was reattached but engine still wouldn't start the entire left side is off timing, I guess the camshaft isn't turning properly.

I'm told the left side will be completely torn down and put back together tomorrow and if that doesn't do it then it will need to be rebuilt.

He told me, that in 20 years with Subaru as a tech that he's only seen it twice and is always caused by lack of tension or oil.

NICE.

Wonder how trust worthy the engine will be after all that?

The other thing was they kept being so annoying when I asked if this would all be covered under warranty, they were like "we'll see" and "let's see what we find"...I guess they are just trying to cover themselves and not commit to anything?

Lmao, that's crazy

Yea typicaly they won't tell you until a soa underwriter comes out and approves the work needed. They generaly do this in big doller repairs to protect themselfs.

You exaust had nothing to do with this malfunction, its 100% on subaru to fix
