Default Calling all engine build Guru's. Please help!

I was in the process of buildng my ej20 in my 02' WRX. I upgraded to an 09' Nitride Coated crankshaft, ACL bearings, new pistons, etc. After I installed the timing belt, I attempted to turn the engine over by hand to make sure everything was ok and could only get 170 degress of the crankshaft turning before it stopped. After tearing things apart I realized that the pistons are hitting the heads.

I was informed that the EJ crankshafts were interchangeable from 99 up. I'm not sure if that is the case.

Can I compensate with different Head gaskets? Am I completely screwed and need to completely disassemble the engine the rest of the way and buy an ej20 crank.

Please help. I'm at my wits end!

You have a 79mm (2.5) stroke crank but need a 75 mm crank (2.0 and 2.2).

what reddevil said, also you should be looking at the 04-05 wrx crankshafts not 06+ I don't believe the 04-05 are nitrided though, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

did you buy normal EJ20 pistons and rods?...if so, reddevil is 100% correct. The only nitrided 75mm stroke cranks are from the JDM EJ207 engines, I belive only the spec C....could be all sti's can't recall.

I get my own cranks treated. USDM EJ20 cranks aren't treated.

You could also get pistons with a 2mm raised comp height that will accommodate the increased stroke and have yourself a 2.1L

The cranks are interchangeable in that they fit in the case and will work with the proper design, but you still have to match the dimensional buildup to get the right clearance to the head (1/2 stroke + rod length + comp height + deck clearance = deck height).

You have 2mm extra up-stroke that is pushing the pistons over-deck.

You have three options:
- swap to a 75mm stroke crank
- get new pistons with 2mm less meat between pin and top surface (2mm less comp height. These are generally called EJ20 "stroker pistons".)
- get new (custom) rods that are 2mm shorter (usually not the route people take for various reasons.)

A 2mm thicker headgasket will theoretically work, but I don't think anyone is going to recommend that option.

this^ or find some shorter rods...I wouldnt trust running a super thick headgasket

At this point, I'd just buy some stroker pistons if I were you. They aren't totally "custom" anymore. A few companies (I think Wiseco and Mahle, possibly more) make and sell them off-the-shelf. If you do pick them up I think you will like the result. You end up with a very noticeable low-end/midrange torque gain.

Mahle makes a EJ20 stroker piston.

SUB193642I16 is the part number

It is .020" over though, however i do think they make a standard bore as well.

Neither of these companies seem to make a standard bore piston, which is what I would need.

Did you want stroke pistons? Because that is what you need. You just stumbled upon a fancy engine build. hahahaha

I should grab a phase1 2.2L crank and stuff that into a phase1 2.5L motor and put simple Eagle rods in there with custom pistons. That will be a nice cheap build!!! lolz!!! There are a handful of them at the local UPULL. If it's a '96 Motor, which has a LARGE combustion chamber just like the EJ257, the motor can be of use for the old skool guys who want a cheap de-stroked motor. lolz

damn these Subaru Legos.....

Manley part number 620000C-4 would do what you need. It's their 92.0mm bore 8.5:1 piston that's made for a 79mm stroke. It's an off the shelf piston that should be available now if you were to call manley and order a set. Price for the set (Comes with wrist pins, rings, and wrist pin locks) should be at or less than 525
