If he's referring to torque steer, then he's thinking of a different car. That's one of the big advantages of Subaru's symmetrical AWD--no torque steer.

Even when I'm driving through deep puddles that would cause the steering wheel in my Civic to tug sideways, I find that the Impreza just cuts straight through it without pulling to the side.

Yep! I'd really like to know what he was thinking though.....

I wouldn't call it torque steer, I drove FWD cars before my first Subaru and I'm well acquainted with that familiar pull (which I don't miss)..

This feels more like an erratic correction at all corners that I'm not doing. What can I do to try and narrow down the root of the issue? I'll be crossing the bridge tomorrow again and will coast across it to see if the pull is still there (even tho I'm pretty sure I tried that).. update tomorrow night!

We were referring to the guy that said if it pulls when you're on the gas, it's the AWD system.....

Anyways, does it do it ONLY on this bridge you speak of? If so, does said bridge have a grate going across it like a draw or swing bridge would?

Ok well since you only answered one of my questions I will assume that it only does it on the bridge and also assume that it has a grate on the bridge. If that's the case, don't sweat it! There's nothing you can do, it's just how the tires behave on grates and ridges and ruts and everything of the sort.

eesh, that really was a pretty incomplete response. my apologies. thanks for the info tho, I'll just look forward to when the stock tires wear down and I replace em lol.

Correct assumptions, btw

Lack of Torque steer and tight turning circle are great features of our Subarus.

Do anyone knows if it can calibrate?
Is the steering wheel can be more loose?

Theoretically, electric(ally assisted) power steering can be recalibrated - other vehicles have selectable "sport mode(s)" that reflect this - but it would probably not be worth the cost even if there was a tuner or dealer out there able to do it with these cars.
And yes bettrave, your '06 Corolla had a hydraulic power steering setup vs. the EPS on the Impreza and most new cars today (mainly for fuel economy reasons).

After driving the Impreza a bit more and comparing the steering to my Mustang (a quite poor example by any means) I've noticed the Impreza's wheel offers little to no feedback of what the front wheels are "seeing" - when going over different surfaces/pavement imperfections and a somewhat different vague feeling of how far the front wheels are turned just off center. This car no doubt has much better steering than the Mustang (almost every newer car's is vastly better), but a hydraulic setup allows a bit more kickback or direct feeling of resistance compared to the more insulated nature of their electric counterparts that I have experienced so far. Just have to get used to it, I suppose.

Yes, the common complaint about electric steering assist is the lack of road feel, regardless of the car's brand. This extends to Porsche and BMW, so even the brands known for handling prowess are getting dinged about reduced steering feel.

I had two friends driving my car.
Both asked if I had the alignment done recently...
I found on the internet, the right word to describe the "problem", the car is "wandering".

When I went to the dealer a while ago, they said that alignment is not under the warranty and there's no chance that it could be de-align.

So, any suggestions?
Thanks.

If you don't trust what the dealership is telling you, then you have no alternative but to bring it to another garage and have them check the alignment.

If the new garage agrees that the alignment is in spec, then you can try what some people have suggested and install a rear sway bar on your base Impreza, which did not come with one from the factory. Some people think an RSB helps minimize wandering.

<shameless plug>

If you decide to try the RSB install, you might be interested to know that I have my OEM 16mm RSB and bushings for sale, as I just replaced them with a 19mm RSB/bushings.

Call SOA, first alignment is supposed to be covered by warranty

Has anyone replaced their stock tires and seen if this makes a difference? I know the stock Yokohama's are "Low rolling resistence tires" which could be an issue with the "wandering".

I replaced the stock tires at 12 miles. My Conti DWS's don't wander and I really can't say if the stock tires did during the 5 miles put on the car during the PDI.

What model of Impreza do you drive? Or more specifically, does your car have a rear sway bar? If your car is a base model, it doesn't unless you've added one yourself. Higher models come with a 16mm RSB.

Some people on the forum are claiming that having a RSB helps with the wandering. The OP's car is a base model, without a RSB. The OP has also been encouraged to have his alignment checked.

You're technically correct, its not a first alignment, its as needed.

Subaru warranty will cover AN alignment in the first 12 months or 12000 miles.

Mostly dealing with visible abnormal tire wear in the first 1 to 2 services.

OP has a legitimate complaint and the alignment should be checked.

...and you did an alignment after a few hundred miles to let the suspension settle and adjust toe?

Thinking about it mine has nearly 1 inch of dead play on centre which may be contributing to our Imprezas unsettled imprecise feeling on highways during windy conditions, it also has the standard rear swaybar so don't think that's an issue.

Try adding more air to the tires. I run about 40psi front and 38.5 rear, giving me a much better and more precise feel in the steering.

FYI the alignment "being in spec" and being correct are two different things. My steering wheel was not centered and the dealership told me that the alignment was in spec, which it was, but it wasn't right. Brought the car to an alignment specialist and he adjusted the alignment properly.

Further clarification: There is a range of values that are acceptable meaning that no components are damaged or need to be replaced. It does not mean that the alignment is adjusted for proper tracking.

Steering wheel being centered is strictly cosmetic. I can adjust your alignment 100% correct and make your steering wheel 90 degrees off center. You'd never notice any difference in handling or tire wear either.
