Default Turbo upgrade question

I have 05 forester xt and am planning on upgrading turbos. I have sti top mount, cat less up pipe and turbo back exhaust, walbro 255, polymer turbo inlet, and vf39. Tuned on my cobb accessport. Want to know what turbo I should get or recommendations. Been looking at the blouch 18g-xt. The one thing I'm worried about is the transmission if I get too big of a turbo. I know that you can blow a tranny in a stock car, I'm not super hard on my car as a daily driver but would like to step it up a little more. Any advice or recommendations would be great. Thanks

That's aggressive, so between 16g-xt or 18g-xt what do you think.

Thanks the 16g-xt does look quite a bit better than the older 16g. Thanks

The 18g may be a little too big for what you will want. Being a dd the 16g should be enough for your goals. I have a VF52 on my car and its supposedly pretty similar to the 16g and that spools pretty quick but has enough overall power for my likings. I think you would definitely like the 16g for just a dd. If I had to get a different turbo I would go with an 18g because I am looking for a little more power. Otherwise its your call. If you dont mind the later spool and have the fuel to run the 18g its still a very good turbo. Personally I would go with the 18g because if you ever wanted to upgrade, the turbo still has more potential.

Yeah and the lag is very minimal between the two. I'm wondering how it would run with the 565 injectors. Obviously I would want to go with bigger but I don't want to buy new ones so I'm not sure when I'll get injectors.

Depending on how aggressive your tune is you may end up pushing the limits of those 565cc injectors. Honestly, you can sell those for like $200 and put that towards some nice 1000cc injectors which retail for around $400, I'm sure you could find them used for cheaper and for peace of mind pick up a $20 DW O-Ring kit. You definitely will not be limited by the 1000cc injectors with a 16G or 18G, and in my opinion the $200 price difference is well worth the peace of mind that you won't go lean at WOT and high boost.

Go for the 18G if you plan on or have done any porting work. It is a perfect size for the 2.5L motor. In my opinion the 16G is just a little bit on the small side. With the right mods, an 18G will spool quickly and deliver more power than a 16G, especially at higher engine speeds.

These are my personal opinions, take them for what they're worth (not much :P). If you already have a tuning shop picked up, give them a call and ask for their opinions/preferences on the turbo and injector choice. Their opinion is what really matters, since they will be the ones doing the tune!

Hey I appreciate the help. I've emailed a few tuners a couple hours away but have yet to hear anything back. I'm going to try calling tomorrow when I'm off work and see if I can get a hold of them.

If you are looking to do a remote tune and not dyno contact Dave at CyroTune Performance. He recently protuned my LGT and I love it. Great guy and prices are good. He will make sure that your XT is tuned to run as best as it possibly can also reliability in mind. Tell him Derek Welker recommended you and you will get taken care of.
