if you're willing to spend a bit more, check out the Pioneer AVH-X8500BHS
it's the new model this year in their DVD lineup, and has full advanced app radio mode for android and iphone, but can also play dvds, mp3, radio, XM, etc..

I just ordered one off ebay for about $500.
I thought about getting JUST an appradio2, but the more i thought about it, the more i realized i don't like plugging my phone in for short trips, and I'd hate to loose XM functionality.

AppRadio2 doesn't have a subwoofer pre-out. Only front and rear channels. That fact alone makes it a non-starter for me. Although, it's still better than Appradio1 which only had 1 set of pre-outs.

Thinking about getting this deck also. Is it possible to retain the steering wheel controls and the USB/Aux plugs in the center console? You installing it yourself?

Yes, i'm going to install it myself. 2005 Legacy Wagon. Just ordered the rear view camera too.

While i don't have either of those things, I don't see why you couldn't re-use them with a little bit of soldering work. USB is just 4 wires and Aux in would be two.

If everything shows up, I'm planning on tackling it next weekend.

Do you know if this unit (or any other non-AppRadio2 Pioneer units) allows full smartphone control with ARLiberator?

I was mostly interested in buying a headunit for ARL but everywhere I see people using it, it is with an AppRadio2 which is too restricted for my setup.

This model has the HDMI-In required to use an android with appmode.. as for ARLiberator, i haven't gotten a clear answer, but assuming this unit uses the same software protocols as the AR2, i'm hoping it works. i'll know more this weekend when i get to installing the headunit.

I may have to flash my phone back to a more stock rom to test, as i don't think MHL is well supported right now on some of the aftermarket ones i'm using right now.

EDIT:
Looks like it does:

And same here. MHL isn't working on my 4.2.2 HTC OneX. I'll have to downgrade to a 4.1 based rom.

Did you mean the AppRadio 2 or AVH-X8500BHS ? I am considering getting the AVH-X8500BHS since it has both the AppRadio functionality and DVD.

I'm sure he meant the app radio2 which does have bad reviews.

The x8500bhs is still really new and has few reviews. but from what i've read, they're all positive. except for the iphone5 owner reviews who are complaining.

im an installer at best buy almost every one i put in comes back with in a week bc the only thing that works is the radio unless your phone is plugged in all the new pioneer dd video radios have app mode and apps work on them. also only a few droid phones work on it and you have to buy another cord that is 100 bucks

Do I really need to get the Pioneer cable kit to connect to 8500BHS (or AppRadio) to use Arliberator ? I was thinking just to get a MHL adapter and it should be fine ?

Yeah, all you need is an MHL cable. the only problem is most MHL cables are short. i did find this one though:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006V7F380/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

6ft should do fine.
You need to provide power through it too, that's what the USB connector is there for. all the data for the app radio comes through Bluetooth, so i opted to connect that to a small car charger, connected to a jack i wired into the 12v constant line of the harness. i used this charger:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0056VNVV8/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Mmm... 2.1A of fast charging goodness.. if your wondering why i didn't just plug into the back of the HU, which has 1A ports, it's because i don't want the damn thing trying to mount my phone every time i plug it in. I've got usb extension cords and aux in running to the cubby above the head unit if i really need to hook something too it

I'm still mid-install on my setup, the info i got about brake override was wrong and i have another car to drive in the mean time, so the leggy sits in the garage gutted until the new override shows up Thursday.

but i can confirm this setup works. I plugged it in and saw my phone screen on the head unit briefly, then it switched back to the main menu and app mode lit up. i can't test around it right now due to the brake override situation. once that shows up, and i confirm I'm good with app mode normally, i'll make the buy on ARLiberator.

Thank you very much for the explanation. Much appreciated.

For the brake bypass, do you think this would work ?

that bypass will PROBABLY work.
This HU has a on-off-on requirement for proving you're in park.

Originally, when i ordered the HU, i ordered this bypass:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/151016632029...84.m1497.l2649

But then i watched a video review, where the reviewer proudly proclaimed "you don't need a bypass, you just have to ground it!" what i didn't realize was what i thought was his difficulty finding a ground was actually him completing the on-off-on sequence. He has now updated his review recommending a bypass.

So i never put that bypass in the harness, and frankly, upon understanding what it needs, i don't see how the unit i bought would complete the on-off-on required it's just a cap, small resistor, and relay. now, i did find that the AVH-P8400BH (last years model) has the same on-off-on requirement, so i ordered this unit:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/120895987935...84.m1497.l2649
Their website is also updated with a compatibility list specifically citing the AVH-X8500BHS

I'm going to give the first one a try, but with little hope, i just ordered the second one for $20. if it works, I'll eat my 20, and probably have a bypass to sell. if it doesn't I'll be contacting the seller.

Okay, the new bypass showed up tonight, and i took a pass at installing it.
I can confirm the second module (the micro one) bypasses just fine and got appmode working with the MHL cable i linked through amazon.

i didn't try ARLiberator yet, as the garage i'm working on it in lacks wifi, and has ****ty cell reception to download the app. Plus, i was busy chasing issues with the backup camera most of the night until the car battery hit 8v. oops.

I'll work on it some more tomorrow night.

Everything is installed, and working perfectly. Arliberator works fine,a few bugs, but there's a beta for use with this radio I don't have yet. Nothing major that disrupts usage

I can't believe people are still buying these. I talked to a local guy who runs a stereo shop in town and he told me that literally every single one he sold or installed has come back and returned it.

I had mine for a grand total of a few days at most... can't remember... before I decided it was junk.
