yes you can run open all the time but it is not advised because it puts slightly more wear on parts

Yes, I did for a while. It is fine for daily driving, but it is an open diff so if you spin the wheels it will basically send all the power to one end (usually the rear). This can cause wear on the center diff if you're spinning a lot. It can also cause a lot of strain on the rear driveshafts. If you have a lot of power it is much more likely to break one. It definitely can be done though. As long as you know the limits you'll be fine. You also have the option to wire a switched 12V source to the center diff and then you can switch between open and locked when you need to.

Very good writeup. I am in the process of hunting down and 07 sti tranny and diff myself for my 09 wrx. I will be using spec b rear axles to mate with the r180 with my 5x100 hubs using my 09 wrx outters. I have one question and cannot find the answer anywhere. What can I do for front axles? I know there is more than one option and the options probably differ in the pricetag but now im just curious of what options are availabe. Thank you in advance to whomever can answer this question.

The 08+ STI outers are what you need for the rears. You'll want the 05-07 STI bar/inners to complete the rears. I just used the entire 08+ STI rear axles, but my car is the widebody. Search for monkiboy's post on this. He has a narrow body and lists out all the options. I am using the stock front axles.

Ben,

He should be able to use the Legacy Spec-B axles with no modification in the rear, also the majority of his post is asking about what front axles to use.

Im curious about this too. as i havent seen anyone put a 6-speed in a 08-10 "narrowbody" car yet. I'd imagine the front spec B axles would work too. or maybe a GD front axle, but im not positive.

personally, if i ever a swap a 6-speed into my 2010, ill just run the GR STi front axles as I'll have converted to the wider track suspension by next week (2011+ STi control arms, 2011+ WRX axles, longer inner tie rods)

Those of us that swapped 6 speeds into the 2005-2009 legacy were able to use our stock front axels. This includes my Outback XT

In the rear as stated we used spec b axels

OK, maybe I misunderstood or I don't have all the info. I thought the Spec B axles were used to mate the R180 with the older 5x100 rear hubs. On the newer WRX's the 08+ STI rear axles are direct drop in with the R180. I believe this means the Spec B axles will not work, but I could be wrong. I didn't really explore that option.

The stock front axles work with a 6 speed. I'm not sure why this would even be a consideration for most people. If you're doing a swap to go wider it could be different. As I was saying before, look up monkiboy's threads. He did the 6 speed on the narrowbody quite a while ago.

Again, I'm not sure if this applies here because the 08+ STI axles work just fine. Maybe I'm way off base here. I guess I didn't do a full set of research once I figured out what would work for me. Maybe monkiboy or someone else can clarify.

Yea I just threw my post out there because I thought the 08 and up WRX and the legacy had the same front axels. I could be wrong but that is what I thought.

Yea the seat frames bolt right in and the spec b 6 speed shifter is the same length as the STI 6 speed shifter.
Many do not realize the 08 and up is really similar to the 05-09 legacy

So what everyone is saying is try to use the front axles of the wrx to mate with the inner of the sti axle. if that doesn't work since I'm sure a narrower axle is in use than the earler sti's. An older sti axle may not be the answer. And may throw off some suspension geometry. When in doubt count the splines I think I've seen a post somewhere with spline counts. Maybe not on nasioc.... Well whenever I find the right trans for me and find what I need to work ill post it up. Probably won't be till later in the summer. Thanks for trying to help guys.

Wow really no one in an 08-09 wrx has done this....
I always loved pioneering.

Well my updates I have a jdm version 7 sti trans on the way with 07 gearing. low miles. Matching rear diff on the way. I still need some things but will be getting this under way by the end of June. Ill post up my own thread and take lots of pictures for my fellow members.

You're not pioneering anything. You're just not researching very well. monkiboy and dur4ce did this years ago on the 08-09. I didn't think I should have to lay this all out in a thread pertaining to the 11+ WRX, but since you didn't look for monkiboy's thread(s) like I suggested, I guess I will type it out so you stop posting over and over instead of researching.

The front axles mate right up, just like mine. For the rear you can just use the proper r160 and your stock axles, or if you want the r180 you'll have to do a hybrid axle with the 08+ STI outer and the earlier (shorter) bar and inner. Really, it's not much different than what I did. All the info is out there. Just look for it.

Sorry. My bad. Lo siento. You could have messaged me. Don't put it out there like I was the one that pulled your arm into posting it on this thread because I obviously couldn't have. The differences between the 08,09-10,11 wrx is minimal at best. Relax. But thank-you.

By the way if monkiboy posted it I looked through like half of his 1000 posts and didn't find anything specifically stating the swap in detail. (not saying its not there). Secondly d4 or whatever the hell it was, was not in a thread of his starting I'm still continuing to look through everything a little carefully since they have less posts.

But seriously thank-you. Help is always hard to find and by the way pioneering is almost never done alone. I may have used the wrong word for what I was trying to convey. Lets go with I can't find they're posts. No one else seems to know. And I feel like I'm pioneering when in fact I can't find anything for it being done. Secondly I'm on my phone the nasioc app which seems to malfunction 90 percent of the time and do not own a computer.

My apologies for ****ing your thread. Sweet car.

i was told by a couple folks i need to check out this thread to provide a reply. but ben's got you covered with the links above. it's a really straight-forward swap/install. i need to work a bit more diligently to get a lot of the information from wrxforums.com over to nasioc so that folks aren't struggling finding information it seems as this is obviously the more popular site.

the only other link i'll toss up is from my initial install in 2010 that sort of synopsizes everything used and initial feedback.

http://www.wrxforums.com/forums/174-...tml#post183896

my install was the basis/template for dur4ce's install so it may seem redundant but steve (dur4ce) did a nice detailed part out list of everything we used for his swap in his build thread that ben has linked you to above.

lastly, like directed there is no need to swap/alter the front axles.

g'luck, sir.

Thanks monkiboy. I do agree that it's really tough to find the info on WRX Forums. That place is pretty much dead, IMO. And the way you guys just added posts within your build threads makes it very difficult to locate them via search. I usually try to make a separate post (like this thread) for things that I think are significant that someone would want to read about independent of the rest of my build. I see you've started moving some things over to NASIOC already. I think that's a step in the right direction for people to see it.

well son of a bitch!

I don't know how I missed the update to this thread after the DCCD pro install! That's very cool the STI axles can be used on the GR WRX! Definitely glad I have a widebody

I said it when you first completed the swap and I'll say it again, thanks for this info! You had the right idea with the best of both worlds gearset(longer sti gears to start and spec B 5/6). I'm thinking when I swap in a six speed now I'll just go ahead and do the r180 and sti axles from the start, rather than buy a 3.54 r160 for a little while.

On my legacy outback XT I chose not to do the spec B gears in my 08 6 speed.

With the stock wheels and tires being 225x55x17 they are a bit taller.

I ended up putting 245x45x18 STI enkei wheels and tires on mine. That size tire is the same diameter as the stock wheel and tire and as such in 6th gear I turn about 2600 on the highway at 70MPH. That is about the same RPM in 6th as the lower profile tires and 17" wheels with the spec B gears.

So my speedo is accurate I have fat tires with 18's and turn 2600 on highway

Yep, easy swap. My rear end did survive about a month or more at close to 600WHP with the WRX driveshaft, rear diff, and rear axles before I swapped. I was pretty happy to see that. No launching, but plenty of FFS. One thing to note is that the STI diff is about 12lbs heavier and the STI driveshaft is about 8lbs heavier. Not sure about the axles, but they're a bit heavier as well. With strength comes weight!

Well without knowing the speed, that doesn't tell us much. But it sounds like your setup is going to be just like any stock 08+ STI. Same gearing and same tire size. The Spec B gears would obviously be longer in 5th and 6th and better spaced from 4-5. Not a big deal for most people though, just a little nicer for daily driving and if you did high speed track.

Yea I edited the speed. It was at 70. You must have posted before I fixed it.

Also my tire size at 245X45x18 is different than a stock STI that is why its 2600 at 70.

I think the STI is a 245/40 series so its shorter. Turns more RPM at 70.

Like I said I turn just about the same RPM as a spec b in 6th due to my taller tire.

The spec b and the STI have lower profile tires.

2600 at 70 is about perfect. IMHO

Yeah, that sounds like about the STI cruising speed. But with the shorter tires on the the normal STI tire + Spec B gear setup you keep that extra acceleration in the lower gears and the low cruising RPM.

So Ben have you noticed if the WRX E-LSDs interfere with the operation of the mechanical LSDs? As in do they reduce the effectiveness of your new LSDs at all or have you found a way to defeat the programming in the ECU that controls that?

I haven't noticed any issues, but I usually turn the TC off, which I believe will turn off the stability control as well.

EDIT: If you want everything off you can pull the ABS fuse. But then you lose ABS too...
