Default What kinda tires do you have?

Well I just got my 99 Subie 2.5RS about two weeks ago and I noticed I need some new tires. Not to mention those Potenzas are'nt the greatest.. so I'm just asking which tires do you trust and rely on to go on your lovely Subaru?

Get some Bridgestone RE730's. Great on pavement AND the wet! (not good for snow though)

Firestone Firehawk FZ50EP... Good tires!
Great in the dry. Grippy. good steering response. Communicative, but not like the RE92s.
Awesome in the wet. They cut through water, which is good here in the NW. No hydroplaning.

I, too, have the Firehawk SZ50EPs, and concur that they are great tires. I had the original SZ50s (non-EP) on my Mustang and was very impressed. When it came time for new shoes on the Legacy, I picked up the newer version, the SZ50EP. I've put somewhere in the vicinity of 23,000 miles on them, and they're due for replacement soon. They're quiet, smooth-riding, very grippy (wet or dry), and have the rim protector on the sidewall. The 340 treadwear rating for a Z-rated ultra high performance summer tire is pretty amazing, and I think the mileage I've gotten proves that number isn't a fluke. Anyone here on the board can attest that I don't baby my car, so that's been a pretty tough 23k miles.

With all that said, when I bought the SZ50EPs the Potenza RE730 didn't exist yet. I might go with the RE730s next time, as they've received very good reviews from guys who I know know what they're talking about, and are a bit cheaper than the SZ50EPs.

such a loaded question!

what type of driving are you looking to do?

all season? dry and fast?

good all season + a few " of snow.... dunlop sp5000's
i got mine for $90 a tire and they tear up the rain, can tackle light snow, and are decent in the dry. Not bad for a daily driver.

If you do any autocrossing like me , I would suggest toyo proxes T1-S. They have awesome dry grip and really good wet grip aswell-they are great at channeling water away. Bad thing about these tires is the price. I think I got mine locally @ a tire place for $130-$140. But so far they have seen 7 autocrosses and 10k miles & theyre still decent...in about 4 months I will be getting new ones.

I guess I have a Supra equipped WRX. I have the Kumho Supra 712's. They are sooooooooo much better than the stock RE92s.

Toyo Proxies are awesome, and all season. Don't remember which one's I have. I think they are like 104 or 110 in any tirerack ad.

I think the best tire BY FAR for sporty all-season use is the Bridgestone Potenza RE950. I've been very impressed with them, so much so that I'm convinced that they share the same tread compound with the RE730.

The 950 is a directional tire like the 730, but has very deep tread. I haven't used them in the snow yet, but I'm told they work very well. They are UNBELIEVABLE in the wet. Highest wet traction of any tire I've ever used. The only thing to remember is to keep the tire pressure up around the max. of 44 psi. I'm running 46f/42r and it's about perfect. Less than 42 in the front gives too much sidewall deflection.

The best thing about the 950 is the price. $96 bucks per tire right now from Tire Rack in stock RS size. The 940s are nice but way too expensive (136!) for what you get, 730s are a better choice in that price range.

Hmm... aren't those good tires?

Anyway, I have a set of Pirelli P-Zero Assimetricos. Very good in the dry and haven't had them break loose in the rain yet on the road, this in a city with slippery tram tracks.

At $72/tire, they're good for the price.

I share Pat and Dustin's experience with the Firestone SZ 50 EP's .... A very very good high performance summer tire in both wet and dry conditions ... Have about 3 months experience with mine ... autocross, rallycross, track driving (wet and dry), dirt and gravel roads ...

my son has RE 730's in his M3 ... and these are a good tire as well ...

If you haven't looked at information on tirerack's web site ... you may find it helpful in addition to feedback and suggestions from club members ... as there are a number of very good high performance summer tires available ...

Hey AnJuMoN!

Nice to see another SoCal driver in an Impreza! I think it is worthwhile for you to give Luke@tirerack a phone call (877-522-8473 ext. 362). He'll wanna know how you're gonna use your car (some track, no track, street only, canyon/mountain running, whatever...), and whether you're looking for aesthetic value, or black rim protectors, or maximum stickiness, or rain performance, or tight budget, or whatever combination.
Anyways, the phone call is free, you don't have to buy from TireRack, but they are pretty valueable resource, because they get to test various tires, and they are close the auto-crossing communities, and they are customer service oriented which means they try to listen well to customer feedback.

If you hit the two links above, it will give you an idea of his viewpoints from where he sits, but if you call him, and he'll listen to your needs and can be more specific about which of those tires are best for your needs.

FWIW, to fit my needs of good value, mostly street, a little auto-x'ing in stock class, and maybe a track day once a year, I'm going w/Firehawk SZ50 EP based upon the feedback I've seen in here from folks like Pat Olsen, and cfwdfw, as well as a conversation w/Luke, and some research on the tire manufacturer's web sites. But if my budget doesn't allow this, then I'll drop down to Potenza RE730's.

I also run Toyo Proxes FZ-4's., They hook up well on dry pavement, wet pavement AND in the snow. ( I got a chance to use them in a MAY snowstorm). They also have a sturdy sidewall, so they corner very nicely...

How do you peeps feel about kuhmo estca supra 712's?

I have toyo proxes t1-s right now but I cannot afford to buy them this time around . The kuhmos run like $40-50 cheaper than my toyos per tire!...

Btw: I do alot of driving every day, mostly dry/wet pavement and then autocrossing ALOT...my t1-s are chewed to h3ll after 7 autocrosses .

Thanks,
-justin

Give the Yokohama AVS Intermediates a try. They ususally cost about 70 bucks a tire and have massive grip. They are hard to find lately, I think thay may have discontinued them, but if you call Tire Rack and ask, I bet they have plenty on hand. This is basically a wet tire for race cars, so it wont last as long as the RE-92's, but it'll last long enough.

got upgraded rims and tires...

OZ Prodrives with Yokohama AVS Sport at 225/45/17

look great, grip in dry conditions is very very good... I have not tried them in the wet yet... not too much rain lately in Northern Calif (Bay Area). But I heard good things about them.

Cheers

Do you have the v-rated or the w-rated kumhos? What size? I was going to order some w-rated 225's but now I'm not so sure.
