I have a harbor freight breaker bar/socket I keep in my car for swapping. Super cheap, plenty functional for doing wheel changeovers, and I have a nice snap on one in the garage.

I was going to request video of this, and post video of my own, but the only good vids I can find of me are 2-tire changes in a leisurely 18 seconds. We've done 2-tire changes as quickly as 14 seconds before.

According to accu-weather report (if it can be believed), the East Coast will not receive any significant snow until Feb. 2014.

too early, I'll wait for the average temp to get in the 40's or when I see first sign of snowfall. Kind of a last minute guy.

I'll throw on my winters after Thanksgiving. I normally wait until December or mid-December to do mine.

I'm actually excited to throw my winter tires on lol. I just ordered them on Friday mounted on some steel wheels. This will be my first winter with the WRX so I'm thinking of getting some weathertech floor mats and a set of RA mud flaps.

I wait until its just about the last warm enough day to wash the car(Usually a Saturday), because I like to take my time to clean/wirebrush the brake hubs, torque everything down perfectly, wash the summer wheels and mark them for next years rotation, then put them in the cellar. Last step is to vacuum out the car, clean the whole interior/glass, give it a good thorough washing, check all fluids, put snowbrush in car, then park her in the garage and have a beer.

I'm having a hard time deciding what to do this year. Too many scenarios.
I have a BRZ and an Impreza. Both currently have summer tires and wheels. My winter wheel setup is past the snow safe markers. I could put that setup as is on the BRZ and make it drive able when it's just cold (no snow). And then put snow tires on the stock BRZ wheels for the Impreza.... Or just completely take the BRZ off the road for the winter.... The second issue is that the majority of my driving is done on the highway, 2 days a week, for 120miles (in the impreza). I'd prefer to not do that on a snow tire, so I'm considering the Continental DWS instead. Anyone rocking those? |

I had DWS's on my Infiniti and they did well. Obviously not as well as a true snow tire but I never got stuck (even after driving out of being plowed in) and never felt it slip or slide (at least unsafely).

Cool good to know. I'm sure they'll be fine. I drove for years in the snow with crappy all seasons and FWD.

I just got an email that Vianor is having their annual sale at the Concord, NH location this weekend. Looks like the sale at the MA store was last weekend. Not cheap tires, but I'm a Nokian whore. It's pretty much the only winter tire I use now.

Just ordered a nice new set of Dunlop Wintersport 3D from Tire Rack, for all of $99/ea + $47 shipping, minus a $60.00 mail-in rebate. Possibly the best price I've seen in a number of years.
I typically do the changeover the weekend before Thanksgiving. |
