I know why I didn't. Less powerful engine than my RS, but also lower weight. The power-to-weight ratios are similar, but the Suby has AWD, a back seat, and a trunk. Those three things make the Suby a better buy, in my opinion, especially with the price gouging the dealers are doing on the Spyder- $32,000 for a 140hp two-seater? No thanks!

A few reasons :
1)Doesn't meet Canadian safety standards (CSA) 2)Doesn't meet emmissions 3)Way smaller market here vs. the US. |

I don't think the MR Spyder should have any problems with emissions, because it uses the base Celica engine (140hp 1.8L I4), right?
I heard the reason why they can not be legally sold here is because the rear bumper doesn't pass Canadian slow-speed crash regulations. (Sorta the same deal as the US-spec V5 front bumper and the Canadian-spec bumper difference on the '99-'01 2.5RS) But then again Toyota could easily redesign or swap in a different bumper (again, like the 2.5RS) but they said it wouldn't sell up here. |

Its true that it wouldn't sell. Redesigning the bumper costs $$$$ and for such a small market it just isn't worth it.

The official reason given to Industry Canada (incharge of overseeig car regulations) is that there is no market for such a car in Canada. How do they explain the Miata success in Canada? More likely is that CDNs want a trunk w/ some real usable strage space. There is a bumber rebar that is available that meets the 8km/h requirements (5km/h in US). It is used on UK built models (also 8km/h), which now doesn't explain the 99-01 Impreza facias in Canada. Oh I hate this regulation stuff.

Why would you want that thing when you could have a Miata? Or better yet a WRX for a few grand more? Or even more to the point, if you want wind in your face, room for only two and very little practicality buy a bike, now there's fun.
Canada will be just fine without that ugly wheeze box on our streets. Kevin |

MR-S vs Miata: weight distribution. I believe it's easier to achieve 50:50 distribution with an FR layout w/engine right behind/on top of the front axle, than an MR layout (engine can't get too forward), but I'm not an engineer. Just by looking at the spec though, Miata 1 ups the MR-S with the same displacement (or is it 2.0 for Miata now?). $32000 for MR-S? no way unless they start putting the GT-S engine on it. Last I heard, the Miata is nowhere near that price. I love the style of the MR-S, but the price is not justified.

The problem wasn't the way the question is phrased. just the fact that I'm in the US, so I didn't know it wasn't available up in the Great White North. My bad

Actually, 50:50 static weight distribution doesn't mean much for performance. I think it's marketing gimmick invented by BMW. A car acts completely differently when it's in motion: braking, accelerating, and cornering.
I'm not a physicist, but to my understanding, if the car has most of it's mass in the middle, it "rotates" better. Someone compared it to a figure skater; notice when they spin, they spin faster as they pull their limbs to the axis? But if they had their arms out (still "balanced 50:50") they spin slower. Plus, there's weight-transfer since the weight is off the axles. From all the reviews I've read, the MR Spyder and Miata are in the same price range, so I don't think "$32K" is accurate. Then again, the 10th Anniversary Edition Miata was well over $30K CAD. I hear the MR Spyder is a wee bit faster on the track, but the Miata is much more liveable and more fun to drive. |

The MR-S beats the Miata in acceleration and braking. Mazda is faster on the track due to the suspension setup.

Ovaltine hit it right on the head. It is called the polar moment of inertia, I believe. It goes something like this, it takes more energy to move a heavy object that is far away from the central axis than it does to move one that is close. This is why you are supposed to carry heavy boxes and stuff really close to you chest, to make it easier to move them in a hurry and to help your balance. A car with 50/50 weight distribution's polar moment is equal at both ends of the car.
