Default The Official FR SPORT 2015 STI Build

FR SPORT is proud to announce our acquisition of not one but two 2015 Vehicles a WRX and a STI. In doing so we also would like to introduce ourselves to the NASIOC community for the first time ever.
We picked up these cars to become even more knowledgeable on the Subaru platforms and aid you guys in anything we can from here and on. Welcome to our Official STI Build!

FRSPORT.COM is one of the biggest e-commerce retailers in the performance part industry and are excited to share all knowledge learned while taking these cars to their reasonable limits. We have helped the Nissan and ZN6 communities attain both light and heavy tuning goals in the past few years and are excited to do the same for the NASIOC subscriber! The following posts will include performance updates to the cars, weight archiving posts that will ultimately help us shed weight where needed (we are indeed big SCCA participants), and any other tuning ritual performed on the the STI version of the car (another WRX Thread will be created when the mods begin to roll in).

It is important to note that this thread will be written and commanded by the FR SPORT marketing and creative team. Because we adhere properly to all NASIOC rules no selling or attempt to deal with transactions will be performed here. According to NASIOC rules anyone is welcomed to contact us via PM where we will gladly respond to all inquiries.

But enough about that, we will begin this thread by sharing a couple of the shots we just finished editing this past weekend when we took both the STI & WRX cars to the Southern California Ortega Highway for some initial driving feedback and evaluations. Enjoy the first few images of the car and stay tuned for future technical and informative updates.

In the section below please browse through some of the updates and upgrades performed to the FR Sport 2015 Subaru STI, we have added page markers for your browsing convenience:

1. Ortega Highway Initial Drive (PG 1)
2. First set of mods performed to the STI - Actual JDM Grille w/ STI Logo, Window Visors, DRL Housings & LED lights, & Prototype Tomei Exhaust.(PG 1)

1. Weight of Stock Exhaust components Added (PG 1)
2. Tomei Expreme STi Weight (PG 1)
3. EJ25 Tomei Downpipe & Manifold Weights (pg 1)

Also in this thread, we will be posting the weights of EVERYTHING we put on this car and take out.
No more believing estimated and made up weights, we are all here for facts! We have also added page markers here for your browsing convenience:

Our Ortega Highway cruise was simply to get the feel for the STI and the WRX as well. We have gotten used to driving powerful FR drivetrain vehicles and wanted to check out some of the differences with these AWD setups. At the end of the day we were able to distinguish small differences here and there. Mostly we enjoyed the drive however. Enjoy the pics and stay tuned for more. We have a SCCA meet tomorrow at El Toro and may just put these guys on the line to further gauge their performance.

Post

After having tested some of the driving characteristics of the STi (and WRX too), we superficially went over what really made these two cars different on the surface. We tried to go over as much as we could but are willing to bet we may have missed a few things here and there. Let us know in the comments what things you have noticed that are superficially different between the cars (if you have purchased one or have access to one). Again we have the base 2015 STI model and the base WRX model of the same year.

This time around, on these 2015 models, the front fascia at first glance seemed similar, at least when we first got them. After further observations we noticed what made the front of our two cars different. The most noticeable thing of course is the STI logo on the front and the lack of one on the WRX model. Researching the front further allows you to find that the housing of the cars' headlights is different as well. The STI, being the more aggressive of the two, sports a darker more menacing housing, while the WRX model dons a more traditional chrome version. The inclusion of fog-lights on the STI is another difference noted at the front as well.

These front shots of the two cars showed us some very important (and pricey) differences between the two Subies. At the top we had the STI, sporting upgraded 18 Inch STI branded rims with 245/40R18 tires, 4-Pot performance brakes (Brembo supplied we believe), and a the STI Fender badge. The WRX on the other hand had the reasonable base 17 Inch WRX wheels with 235/45R17 tires, base factory dual piston brakes, and its own WRX badge as well. Both of our cars currently were wearing the Dunlop Sportmaxx RT tires in the sizes mentioned. According to our two drivers during the Ortega drive, the difference in grip between the cars was only slightly noticeable.

Rounding out our comparison of the exterior of our two Subaru cars was this rear shot. It wouldn't be an STI without the big wing right? This observation of the two cars was the most noticeable of course and that of the rear STI and WRX badges too. What was kind of surprising however, was that both of the cars had similar looking exhaust designs (at least at the exit). After looking at them from below we know the routing of them is slightly different, but we would have imagined that Subaru would have added more pizzazz to the STI car.

The inside of the cars provided us with some expected differences. Leather seats in the STI vs. Fabric seats in the WRX. The same treatment being mirrored throughout the front and rear door inserts of the two cars. Smaller details yet were the hue differences in the shift knobs, Red in the STI vs Silver in the WRX. In the background also present were the STI and WRX badging in their respective center consoles. The same details also were translated in the steering wheel as well as in the floormats (not pictured due to our 10 image limit). Of note however is that the instrumentation of the car or the electronics were exactly the same. Both offered the cool digital Boost Gauge at the top of the dash and dials and all were the same. Essentially all replaceable should you want to upgrade STI parts if you go with the WRX model.

Because we are only doing a superficial run-through of the cars, we will only talk a little bit of what was under the hood (with more on the engine later). In the picture above is the 2.5 L engine of the STI and below that is the 2.0 L Engine of the WRX model. Most of you guys already know that the STI features the older yet refined engine of the outgoing STI model, while the WRX sports the same (or similar) engine featured in the Subaru BRZ (which we also own), yet turbocharged. Car and Driver and other automobile magazines have already reported pros and cons between the two cars and only time and our builds will tell how well they respond to our mods. After further inspecting the FA Engine in the WRX we have decided to split the builds in two. In the future you guys will see a separate FR SPORT 2015 WRX Thread as we see know the differences merit their own info/thread.

If you guys have any questions about other differences perhaps not noted in this post comment below and we may just have the photos in our database. We were only able to post 10 of them and have 55 in total. Cheers and until next time.

Default The FR Sport 2015 Subaru STI Gets Some Cool Mods

Our 2015 Subaru STI has been running around town in stock form for far too long. Thanks too a few good vendors of ours however, we were able to source some cool trinkets for the car. Read on to check out some of the JDM swag we have recently added to one of our newest Subie' cars.

One of our first upgrades was the new JDM STI Grille. This Grille is what the Japanese 2015 STI comes with overseas and we were lucky enough to source one and mount it the same day we got it. The difference is subtle but we definitely like the uninterrupted look of the JDM grille over the gaping holes found on the USDM model (even if they do offer a tiny bit more air intake).

All it took to remove the grille was the quick detachment of the front bumper, some clips, and Phillips screws in the back of the USDM grille and voila the grille was installed. Quick and easy mods are our favorite for sure!

This is how the new front looks like now. Ahh nothing like a continuous , uninterrupted pattern; you design geeks now what we're talking about hehe.

After we put the bumper back on the car we also began putting on our Subaru oem window visors. These weren't necessarily JDM but they definitely added to the cool factor. Because we all know that it doesn't rain in Southern California due to our horrible drought, we still discovered that they help reduce sun glare in the mornings and afternoons as we drove home.

The install was easy for these 4 pieces and all it required was some precision and patience. There are a few clips on the back of the visors along with double-sided tape that secured the parts to the side of the window trim. One simply had to align and press and the visors were on.

Here's how they looked mounted on the STI car.

Default 1st Initial Mods Continued

Our coolest mod to the car however had to be the addition of some JDM only daylight running lights or DRL's for short. Above you can see that the JDM housing for the DRL units comes in a glossy finish versus the matte USDM units. The shiny housing definitely enhances that Darth Vader look exponentially!

The kit we received came with 2 housings, 2 Daylight Running LED Lights, 2 Daylight Running Light covers, and some wiring harnesses. We are still researching and writing up the install process for our followers so keep an eye for the how to's on adding this to your USDM STI.

Here are a couple of shots of the lights installed on our car. Clearly the shinier housing compliments the overall aesthetics of the car better than the matte units in our opinion.

Not all the upgrades performed to the STI were aesthetic in nature. Here next to our OEM exhaust system lies a prototype Tomei unit we were lucky enough to test for them. Take a look at how un-restrictive the Tomei unit is! When we removed the stock mufflers, we were astonished at how big these suckers were in relation to the Tomei unit.

The total weight savings over the steel exhaust were also amazing. The stock 2015 STI exhaust components weighed in at a total of 40.7 pounds, while the Tomei unit only registered 16 pounds!

Here is a preview shot of what it looked liked going in and getting attached to the exhaust hangers. After we have confirmed fitment, we'll post more legitimate and completed images for everyone to gander at.

The Tomei exhaust rounded out the initial list of mods and upgrades to our 2015 STI and now that we have a few in we are hungry for more haha. Stay tuned to future updates and keep checking back once in a while for more modifications performed on the FR Sport 2015 Subaru STI Vehicle. Cheers!

You guys haven't gotten any love yet, so I'll chime in. The Tomei looks nice, looking forward (or hearing forward as it were) to hearing some sound clips.

Are you guys going to do a build thread on the WRX?

Haha thank you sir!

Yeah we know we're kind of new here so we figured peeps would be shy
or reserved to start a convo' at first.

Yes, we will be doing a WRX build as soon as we get some stuff in that guy
as well. The Tomei exhaust they asked us to fit on our STI is doing quite well
and we should have a sound clip up on our YouTube shortly.
We'll post it up here too.

I actually have the weights going in some time today! - JMR

Default Stock Exhaust Weight VS Tomei Prototype

Check out some of the potential weight savings we've uncovered with our Tomei Prototype Exhaust. Below are the images of the stock exhaust components weighed against our Tomei Expreme Ti Prototype unit.

Thanks! Yeah that one might take a bit, because the harnesses provided with our testing kit didn't seem to plug anywhere on the oem lighting harness we had to hard wire it in. As soon as we are confident to share the info we'll post it up asap or post a link to our How To site

Hello,

Sorry for the late response, our Marketing/Social Media guy (me lol), was out
for Vacation.

It sounds great, I had to put the audio edit aside for bit but should have one
out soon. The sound the exhaust puts out is epic but not dumb loud. If or when
we remove the catalytic converter and swap out the down pipe with another
Tomei prototype unit, it will definitely get crazy loud.

Below is a very basic Iphone/IG video link we posted the day it got installed. A higher
quality bit should come out soon

Also the grille you can get from us, but since forum rules say I can't sell stuff to you guys
on build threads it's be best if you call in. Should be able to source those for you. - JMR

Hi everyone here is our video of what was at the time the prototype Tomei Titanium Exhaust.

At this time we only had the Catback Exhaust system and no other exhaust components
installed. Let us know what other angles, views, or info you guys would like to see from
this video series!

Turn your speakers up and go on a little trip around our neighborhood.

Keep an eye for more posts. We know have another person contributing so you guys should see
a bit more content from this thread. Cheers. - JMR

Hey guys!

We are currently working on a diagram or tutorial of some sort for the install. Once it is finished then we will post it up!

Here is a little teaser of what is coming up next for the car

Default 2015 STI Header & Downpipe Weights

Hi Everyone this is just a quick informational update on a couple of items we recently installed on the FR Sport 2015 STI.
We recently integrated a Tomei Equal Length Manifold (Part no. 193105) to the car as well as a Tomei Downpipe (Part no.
431106). The following are some of the recorded weights.

This is the stock 2015 STI Manifold and how much it weighs with all of the heat shields attached.

In comparison, this is how much the Tomei unit weighs. The unit ultimately ended up shaving about 6 pounds.

The accessory pipe that routes exhaust gases up to the turbine from the manifold came with the exhaust manifold and
also netted us some weight savings. Below is the stock unit...

And this is the Tomei unit which saves about 2 pounds.

The stock downpipe which is constructed of from 3 pieces, one of them being the Catalyzer, weighs in at roughly 18.5
pounds in total. The following couple of images consist of the stock hardware.

Below you can also see that the turbine exhaust inlet on the stock downpipe is a puny opening. In the Tomei unit the
opening here encompasses the whole flange, rather than just a small hole to the side of the mating unit.

Again my point is clearly visible with the upper most section of the Tomei Downpipe below. Notice how the flange is
completely encompassed by the opening and smoothly transitions into the larger pipe. The 2nd section of the pipe also
removes the catalytic converter allowing for even greater exhaust flow.

*Notes: We were able to retain only the upper section of the Downpipe Heat shield in the process. We knew this ahead
of time which is why he had all of our pipes coated in Heat Resistant Ceramic Coating.

Hello,

You know what since our awesome driver Max Hayter is competing in in the
D Stock class, it wouldn't be too efficient for us to install parts and then have
to take them off for the SCCA competitions. That class requires for the car to
be stock in order to stay at that level and currently Max is killing it (in a good way)!

As soon as we do start adding or taking off stuff we'll make sure to share

As far as the wiring for DRL lights go, our tech guy is up to his neck in projects
but we have communicated to the team that you guys want a solid write up.

Stay tuned as we'll take pics and notes of the process as it is a little wiring
skill heavy. - JMR
